Kwame Alexander’s novel of the same name gets a TV adaptation in r. The YA drama follows the coming-of-age stories of brothers Josh (Jalyn Hall) and Jordan Bell (Amir O’Neil), and it’s narrated by an older version of Josh, played by Himie Freeman. The brothers were considered basketball phenoms as kids, and The Crossover centers on their journeys on and off the court. I do hope Citadel works out. I am sorely deprived of “extended universes”.

A minor road rage incident that spirals violently and hilariously out of control when both parties are too proud to let it go/de-escalate REALLY reminds me of the “El Mas Fuerte” segment of Wild Tales (which you should absolutely see right away if you haven’t!)

So there’s yet another new Waco product. Just what this country needs right now. Even putting it back in the zeitgeist isn’t productive since it’s inevitable how these function as hagiographies to a lot of viewers. Those who are old enough to remember when this occurred will know the effect it had (the events, the coverage, and the various interpretations of the events). It was the start of the mainstreaming of a lot of troubling ideology and organizations that we have to deal with now.

I found the Waco miniseries to be much better at keeping a good amount of blame on the Davidians and not minimizing their crimes. I hope the Aftermath will as well.

The one from a few years ago or the new docuseries?

      • robgrizzly-av says:

Interesting. I actually found the miniseries sympathetic to the Davidians, and it somewhat blamed the authorities for escalation. Perhaps it’s a bit of a rorschach test. I guess that means it was balanced? In any case, I thought it was well made, and it’s cool to see Michael Shannon reprising.

I didn’t get that impression from the miniseries. The impression I got was that the Davidians absolutely committed crimes that warranted a warrant, that they escalated the situation by arming themselves and engaging in a shoot out (it’s not clear who fired first), that the need to haul the ringleaders off to jail remained and was heightened, but that the US Federal Government fucked up the hostage situation by playing a big dick contest between agencies at worst or poorly communicating at best. Finally, that the Davidian leaders did actually commit mass suicide and that it wasn’t the tear gas or knocking down the walls that caused the fires.

A nun fighting an evil AI? Ok, you got me. It at least sounds different. Betty Gilpin as the nun is the icing on the cake. Plus, I just finished watching Warrior Nun season 2, so I’m all out of wacky nun violence shows.

I fear Mrs. Davis has a bad title that will get no one to take notice.

      • davidwizard-av says:

Yeah, it’s a truly abysmal title, which is unfortunate considering how bonkers it looks.

      • iggypoops-av says:

I had not heard of it and wouldn’t have thought “nun battling evil AI” from the title. I note in the trailer that they emphasize the A and I in Davis, but that’s still not really very effective.
