When we last saw Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, he was… drunkenly falling asleep in a puddle with Barry Allen at the end of The Flash. In this trailer for Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom, the sequel (sea-quel!) to his surprisingly big hit solo movie from 2018, he’s looking a little more dignified. Oh sure, he’s changing his Aqua-baby’s diapers and letting his Aqua-pants dry on a clothesline, but he’s still a damn king and he’s still going to remind everyone why that first movie was such a surprisingly big hit in the first place.

Unfortunately, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s Black Manta has leveled up since he last stopped by, and in addition to his cool underwater super-suit with its laser eyes and big, wide helmet, he now possess an evil magic trident that seems to give him untold evil magic powers that threaten to destroy the whole undersea world (and probably the oversea world as well). So who does Aquaman turn to? Not Amber Heard’s Mera, for reasons that have nothing to do with anything, but his (formerly?) evil brother Orm, the Ocean Master, played by a buff and bearded Patrick Wilson—at least until he shaves and puts on a shirt. Then he’s still Patrick Wilson, but just a… more recognizable version of him.

Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom is apparently the final film of the old DC movie universe, and one that has been tossed around through development for quite a while. It’s now supposed to open on December 20, which is relatively soon for us to just be getting a trailer now, but the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes have obviously impacted Warner Bros. Discovery’s promotional plans to some extent. In addition to the aforementioned stars, Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom will also feature Temuera Morrison and Nicole Kidman as Aquaman’s mom and dad, and Dolph Lundgren as Mera’s father.

This will be big and dumb, but I love overpowered Black Manta and Momoa always looks like he’s having fun, so why not?

DC really has not learned from the MCU trailers has it? I think I just saw the whole plot from funny intro, to mid-film clash/downfall, to finale. When I went into Avengers: Endgame I had NO IDEA it was a heist movie, and I loved being surprised.

It does feel like I just watched review that explains the whole movie. They should have left the brother and black trident out. Let the rumors discuss his role and how manta gets so powerful so we can actually have a story to follow.

My hat goes off to that trailer for showing us some comic books at the end and suggesting we read them.

great trailer and if it does half as well as the last aquaman it will outgross every 2023 dc release put together.

the tone was all over the place in that trailer. Just like DC films. Gunn is going to have his work cut out for him. Me thinks the strike delay and pause will benefit the reboot.

I appreciate how brightly-colored and -lit everything was. Aquaman is ridiculous and this is exactly what a live-action Aquaman movie should look like. (I have no illusions that this movie will be good by any traditional metric.)

I just hope it manages to do the same as the first Aquaman movie in that it was incredibly, liek so stupid, but still had a blast during it.The fact that the evil trident is literally called the Black Trident is a good start.

This looks super expensive, like $300 mill expensive. Also, why does Yahya Abdul Mateen sound like he’s reading his lines in his sleep? Dude was great in the first one!

Not sure it should be possible to burn down Atlantis. Probably a bad idea to build it out of shit that can burn underwater.

  • peejjones-av says:

i know those probably aren’t the final SFX, but good lord do they look BAD

    • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

yeah? i don’t think they look better or worse than most anything else these days. at least the shots themselves appear to be framed with some consideration.

  • mytvneverlies-av says:

Is Mera being held prisoner by a seamonster (like gramma) or something?Cause you’d think she’d have a cameo in the domestic scenes where he talks about being a husband and father, even in a trailer. Maybe I missed it.

The trailer did not elicit any strong reactions from me. Teaming up the
bickering brothers evokes Thor: The Dark World, &
I’m concerned by Mera being sidelined. It will always amuse me how little Black Manta resembles a manta
    ray.

It will always amuse me how little Black Manta resembles a manta ray. Yeah, he looks more like a Black Mantis, with the exoskeleton and all.

Bring on the young man swimming from Montgomery, Ala., and it’s a go.salute, #Aquabro!
