After fourteen years, the introduction of tactical turtlenecks, and one ingeniously boundary-breaking coma/dream world arc, Archer is officially coming to a close.

Announcing its summer slate on Monday, FX announced that the upcoming fourteenth season of the Emmy-winning animated comedy would be its last; per The Hollywood Reporter, production on the final installment is already underway. The new season is set for a two-episode premiere on August 30.

Created by Adam Reed, Archer first premiered on FX back in 2009, eventually moving to sibling network FXX in 2017. Led by the indomitable vocal talent of H. John Benjamin as Sterling Archer, the series also features Aisha Tyler, Judy Greer, Chris Parnell, Amber Nash, Reed and Lucky Yates. For twelve seasons, the late, great Jessica Walter also had a key role in the series, voicing Archer’s mother, Malory.

As The A.V. Club’s resident Archer expert William Hughes points out in his season 13 finale review, Archer’s lengthy run saw the scrappy series navigating upheavals that for other comedies may have been lethal blows: network switches, company mergers, and Walter’s 2021 death. But the series’ tongue-in-cheek spirit and deft ability to expand upon a tried-and-true format kept it not only afloat but buoyant, succeeding in equal measure as a workplace comedy, a classic spy thriller stuffed with hijinks, and an endearing commentary on being human.

Beyond Archer’s grand farewell, FX’s summer lineup also includes a few more returning highlights, including the premiere of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’s record-breaking sixteenth season on June 7, The Bear’s second season on June 22, What We Do In The Shadows’ fifth season on July 13, and Reservation Dogs’ third season on August 2. Whether animated spy hijinks, intense back-of-house drama, or plain old Philadelphian bacchanalia strike your fancy, FX has it covered.

Damn it, I had something for this…

While I enjoyed the 13th season, it wasn’t the same without Jessica/Malory. Glad they’re giving them one more to wrap it up.

That blows. Archer was consistently brilliant. One of the very few shows worth watching over a couple times.

Feels like this show has been ending for about five seasons now… Are they sure this time?

To me that final moment between Malorie and Archer in season ten finale was a perfect ending. I’ve since considered it “my” ending for the series.

I mean, they switched it to FXX to be a tentpole that would attract viewers to a newly-launched sister channel, but sure, I suppose the move might’ve killed a different show?

    Are we still doing phrasing?

I’m sad to hear it. Archer has had plenty of episodes that were forgettable at best (the “dream seasons”, big chunks of seasons 6 and 7, etc), but the good episodes were and are really good – and the show finally started getting good again in the past two seasons.
But the show never really made a serious rally back in the ratings after Season 5/Archer Vice, which seems to have mortally wounded the show. Ratings cratered after the Season 5 premiere episode and never recovered for the season, and while the Season 6 premiere did get a good bump, the rest of the Season then went into decline. Switching to FXX didn’t help either. I’m honestly impressed it lasted as long as it did.
Oh well. Archer will live on in syndication and various streaming sites. Maybe they’ll revive it again down the line – if Futurama can get another revival after repeated false starts, maybe Archer can.

I watch one of the later episodes – where they’re finally back to being a spy agency – and it really lacked the zip and zing of wordplay that the Adam Reed writing had. It was more like a…generic adult cartoon. The dialogue was slower, and the segues and interruptions were gone that were a trademark of the show.At least you won’t get shot any more, I guess.

I did enjoy the 1930s South Pacific season, Danger Island.

I hope they address Vernoica Deane in this season. I so wanted to learn that Malory or Lana or both hunter her down and killed her for shooting Archer.

I cannot remember any show I watched that I could just go back and watch over again and just belly laugh until I tear up from joy and laughter as much as Archer. It is just fantastic. I will miss it but I will rewatch it over and over. ( I have been a avid tv watcher since the early 1970’s for reference)

I really wish we could have made it to season 15. I could have used a buffer season to prepare myself.Plus while I think the last season was pretty funny, I’d assumed it was weirdsies doing it without Jessica Walter. I would have liked a slightly better season now that they’ve warmed up, THEN an epic final one.But fourteen is a very solid run. There aren’t that many shows that have gone on for so long and that I can turn to for hard laughs as easily in season 1 as season 12.

I always thought Krieger would have fit in perfectly on the Venture Brothers, with all that freaky super science shit.

    Oh thank God.

    Lana. Lana! LAAAAAANAAAAAAAAA!

  • Nitelight62-av says:

They should have called the show ‘Poovey’……
