Oh, that crafty Barry Keoghan. Lately he’s been working with all your favorite directors (most recently: The Banshees Of Inisherin with Martin McDonagh) and racking up credits in all your favorite franchises (like a buzzy teaser role in The Batman). So it’s no wonder that fans thought he was a likely candidate to join the star-studded cast of Dune. And of course, Keoghan himself fueled the fire with some vague but telling public statements.

In a new New York Times interview, Keoghan says he likes to be in communication with his audience via Twitter, because “sometimes it’s nice to put out the positive tweets and positive comments.” He also clearly likes to be a little sneaky with it, dropping a few eyebrow-raising emojis when around the announcement of Dune: Part Two. “Ah, yeah, I really enjoyed that process,” he admits of riling up the fanbase with that tweet. “Look, I’m a big fan of Dune, and it would have been nice to be part of it. I’m a big fan of Timothée [Chalamet, the star of the franchise] as well. But it wasn’t for me. You have to accept that sometimes. Sometimes it’s not for you.”

It’s unclear if Keoghan was in talks for the film, or if that tweet was just a form of manifestation. In any case, the actor is looking towards the future and hoping to transition into being a leading man, anyway. “Well, the aim is to go from being a scene-stealer to being the star of a movie. Am I able to do that? We’re going to see that with Saltburn,” he explains. “It’s my first lead role, and the first time I had to really step up in terms of stamina and just being fully committed. I always want to test myself. I don’t ever want to get to a stage where I think I have it figured out.”

“So the scene-stealing thing—it’s nice, but I don’t want to be known as that,” says Keoghan, who has received acclaim for his supporting roles. “I want people to see me and think, ‘That boy can hold a movie.’” (Just not Dune.)

Is this literally an article about a couple of Tweets a guy made and how he’s not in a movie that nobody ever said he was in?Just want to make sure I’m getting that right.

Pretty standard for an outlet that once complained about hearing about Olivia Wilde while writing an article about Olivia Wilde

      • murrychang-av says:

Oh man I wonder what that Olivia Wilde is up to, haven’t heard anything about her in the past 30 seconds!

    • kinjacaffeinespider-av says:

Yes, I think you got it.

Not quite – it’s 350 words (exactly half of which are quotes) about an interview about a couple of tweets about a movie and how the tweeter is not in this movie but IS in another movie and oh by-the-by, here’s a link to our coverage of that movie. In other words, it is a very unsubtle re-promotion of Saltburn, with the link at the end of the article so that readers who click it are self-selected to be more likely to engage with further “Barry Keoghan content”.In different other words, you are a crop to be farmed.

What’s interesting is that it’s not just reporting on a chapter from Matthew Perry autobiography.

Also, I guess maybe I’m missing something, but the article doesn’t actually say what the tweets were? There’s a link to an out-of-context tweet with wink and shh emojis, but were there more tweets? Why wouldn’t you include them? This article is about a thing that it only alludes to.

Does the Head Twat, I mean Twit know of this?

For a minute there I thought Ezra Miller went through rehab

      OK that’s just mean.

It’s pretty impossible to unsee. It’s like Ezra put on a couple of pounds because someone kept them away from meth for a few weeks, and grew a scraggly beard. If you want to break the spell, though, look at Keoghan’s eyes. There’s no crazy in those eyes. You ever seen a picture of Ezra Miller where Miller isn’t giving the camera crazy eyes?

I don’t care about Dune, but just wanted to say Keoghan has been fantastic in the films I’ve seen him in. Very naturalistic actor.

This seems more like it was posted in order to be like a general “commentariat: talk about Barry Keoghan” so I will. Despite being in Killing of a Sacred Deer with the ostensible lead Colin Farrell, as well as Nicole Kidman, he really was the third lead in the movie as opposed to a supporting role. He is interesting but his approach seems a little derivative at times…his character in Banshees has more than a touch of Arnie Grape…for Sacred Deer maybe I dunno Gummo (jk that was just the spaghetti)? I am not certain he will be the best Joker, but it would be pretty shit of them to bother including him in the first one and then not use him. Also, casting someone who relies on quirks a bit too much as Joker is on the nose. Anyway, as seen in Banshees and Sacred Deer, he and Farrell work well together, hopefully someone will cast them together again, and because Keoghan gets to work with everybody I will The Secret it into being Cronenberg. One last note: he also did something like this with Joker, like tweeting at the director that he is standing by to play the Joker again when the call comes…that seems like a bad idea.  Implying you were offered something if you weren’t also seems like a bad idea, that won’t go over well with producers…I hope he thinks better of it or just quits fucking Twitter.

He had a fun moment in Eternals where he swapped an ancient tablet for a box of cookies!

    • bcfred2-av says:

He hit his head and died in Dunkirk, but it was okay because Cillian Murphy was upset about his ship sinking. That’s pretty much what I know about Barry Keoghan.  Oh, and that it sounds like he wanted to be in Dune but they said no.

Sometimes I look at, you know, the lady who plays Arwen on LOTR and I’m like “that’s not for me”Same usage

He’d make a great Vlad Putin in the inevitable swathe of movies we’re gonna get:

    • bobkatnadamar-av says:

Okay so I’ve begrudgingly seen almost every movie he’s in and i cannot get on board with his acting and it seems like you’re picking up on why – too many quirks, playing nearly all of his characters like they have a mental disability of sorts and i cant help but wonder if Barry himself has autism or anything of the sort. Killing of a Sacred Dear, Dunkirk, Batman, The Green Knight, and now Banshees – he’s always playing the annoying/dumb but not ill intended character. Is he just typecast in these roles or is his acting style mimicking someone with autism. I know what im saying is mildly offensive but i cannot stop thinking about it every time i watch him on screen.

      • anathanoffillions-av says:

Well, that’s what my Arnie Grape knock kind of was…especially if derivative (because Leo was fucking amazing in that role)…I think he fills that role of annoying mildly offensive not ill-intended very well and that what you are talking about does get in the way, he’d be better without it…if he announced “I am autistic” I would feel a little better about it, because he is Simple Jacking a little bit. There have been others who have started out that way and then settled in. Off the top of my head I would say Colby Minifie who I wanted to reedit Jessica Jones to remove; she is now great on The Boys. I hope he settles in soon and…does less.

You can’t convince me that header picture isn’t a wax figure.

  • rigbyriordan-av says:

Wow, he must have been beaten up pretty badly in that attack, because he’s clearly had some reconstructive surgery. I feel for the guy.

  • saltier-av says:

Who is Barry Keoghan and why should this stub of an article make me care?

  • brianyatman-av says:

He was fantastic in Killing of Sacred Deer. Just an unnerving presence.

  • knukulele-av says:

As a long time member of several Dune shitposting groups, let me say this guy is not Dune meme worthy. He’s just trying to jump on the woke culture ass wagon.

  • rev-skarekroe-av says:

He could make a good living just taking over roles from Ezra Miller.
