Generally speaking, using software to edit pictures of celebrities so they’re smiling is not a good idea. At best, the results are fascinatingly unpleasant. At worst, they’re a cultural and aesthetic horrorshow. The latest case in point is a collection of Eminem photos where his perpetual angry-boy frown has been, via technology, flipped upside down. It is wrong.
“Courtesy” of Facebook user Mike Brown, these images take Eminem’s tough publicity shots and, instead of making them a bit more welcoming, turn his face into a series of deranged, toothy grins.
First, we have Slim Shady as we’ve always known him—broody, slightly menacing.
Then, the sun breaking out from behind the clouds, a bizarre smile is glued onto his mug.
Speaking to Bored Panda about his ungodly work, Brown says manipulating pictures of faces is “just funny” to him. He describes his mad scientific process, which involves doing “a first edit in Photoshop” followed by a pass with an app and the application of “a few filters to make the image seem real.” As to his latest choice in subject, Brown says he chose Eminem “because that guy never smiles!”
Not all of them are as unhinged as the set shown above. In some, Eminem almost—almost—turns out looking like a real human being after Brown’s finished his tinkering.
Mostly, though, the results are horrendous. Brown’s demonic endeavor reaches its nadir, however, with a triptych of Eminem’s face slowly transitioning from angry to amused to, finally, a manic, unnatural joy.

They seem to have done poorly with his eyes. A real smile relaxes the face, and the eyes don’t look angry. His face always looks tense, and I think they don’t know how to soften it.
Have you ever taken an image of The Joker and covered that trademark grin so that only the top half of his face is visible? That’s what this is.

With that furrowed brow these smiles read as affably perplexed, like “What are you doing you big goofball?” It’s downright magical.
The teeth. They’re all wrong. It’s like a tooth whitening ad, and they’re too big.
“Its just funny to him” is the most solid and believable reason one could give.
This is the opposite of keeping it real.

Honestly, that’s one of the reasons why I’ve never liked Eminem. Not that money and fame mean you can’t be miserable still, but you’d think such a widely successful person would smile at least occasionally. He seems like a real bummer to be around.
Did you watch The Defiant Ones, the HBO doc about Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine? Eminem is a completely humorless person and it’s so strange in the context of sitting around, telling stories about how you all became outrageously rich and successful.

I saw Snoop Dogg talking about Eminem on TV once, just chuckling about how serious he is and having no idea why.
Which is weird in no small part because having an impish, self-deprecating sense of humor was kind of Eminem’s shtick during his early career. People forget that in-between all the raging homophobia and wife murder fantasies, the guy could be pretty funny.
Yeah, I remember him at the beginning when he was goofy and made funny music videos. It bummed me out that he seemed so miserable.

Sure. I have no doubt that the dude smiles at times. It would be nearly impossible not to. But his public persona involves a permanent scowl on his face, which I found really off-putting.

Whomever created these, I can appreciate the effort and time. I don’t think they have looked at enough pictures of Marshall actually smiling though because I think a couple of them could look more authentic. Thanks for the smile.

When I was a kid, faking accents of other races was a thing you did to be offensive and/or funny. Italian accents, really bad asian accents, and black people accents were common on school grounds. As an adult it is considered racist and mean and demeaning.

Never fake like people who smile in your face, and talk about you behind your back. He tells you about yourself to your face. It’s refreshing. And when he smiles, it’s real, not for the camera, publicity, or to please someone else. So leave him alone, before he decides to come for the one who has nothing better to do, but stay in his business, and try to say how he should act. I love Slim Shady, Marshall, Eminem, or the Goat, he is the realest in business, and deserves respect,(which is why most others rappers respect him, respect not scared of) not that he cares about haters, he always takes out the trash.
