For a dollar, name a gay rom-com lead! If you said Billy Eichner, congrats on your win, as Universal Pictures has released the first trailer for the meta rom-com Bros. Bros stars and was written by the Billy On The Street comedian.

The film marks a monumental moment in film, as it will be the first major studio romantic comedy centered around two gay men that also features an entirely LGBTQ+ principal cast. Additionally, Eichner is the first openly gay man to both star and co-write in his own major studio film.

In the trailer, Eichner’s character breaks the fourth wall a bit, discussing how he was asked to write a rom-com about a gay couple by some big-time movie producers. “Something a straight guy might like?” he snarks. “Am I gonna be in the middle of some high speed chase, then all of a sudden fall in love with Ice Cube? Or am I gonna get butt fucked by Jason Momoa while we’re both worrying about a volcano?”

Per the film’s synopsis, Bros will follow Eichner and his love interest Luke Macfarlane as they “maybe, possibly, probably, [stumble] towards love. Maybe. They’re both very busy.” We see those trials and tribulations in the trailer, as Eichner and Macfarlane seem be extremely affected by each other very quickly.

The rest of the cast includes an all-star team of comedic actors like Ts Madison (The Ts Madison Experience), Guy Branum (The Other Two), Monica Raymund (Chicago Fire), Guillermo Díaz (Scandal), Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live), Dot-Marie Jones (Glee), and Jim Rash (Community).

Having co-written Bros script with Eichner, Nicholas Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall) will also be directing the film. He will be producing the film too along with previous collaborator Judd Apatow (The King Of Staten Island) and Joshua Church (Trainwreck).

Bros hits theaters this fall on September 30.

I love Billy Eichner! I hate romantic comedies, but this looks fun.

I’m a simple man: I see Oscar Winner Jim Rash’s name, I’m on board.

stoller’s romantic comedy bonafides are pretty much unmatched among his contemporaries (forgetting sarah marshall and the 5 year engagement are two of my faves of all time) and he worked well with eichner on the extremely uneven friends from college.my expectations are high.

same, and man, did this fucking capture the issue with mainstream movies trying to act like us queers are actually just hetero people and we don’t have a very separate identity.

Yeah, the difference between cishet and queer attitudes towards sex is VAST. I’m just about queer myself and moving to a country where most of my new friends were gay men was a pleasantly hilarious change of pace.

What country are you moving to?It sounds like a secret paradise!

I moved from the UK to Aotearoa New Zealand 🙂 Basically my queer, NB partner has an almost entirely queer mate group which I then made my own 😁As for living here, yeah, I can highly recommend it!

Those movies aren’t actually very good (and Friends from College was complete garbage.) But this looks promising!

Cuz, the trailer…I love Luke Macfarlane, though. Aw…Brothers & Sisters…was so long ago.

Verb tenses are weird with film production, but it seems like in this case it should have been some form of present tense (“is directing”) instead of future tense (“will be directing”) since his directorial work has, definitely, already started (and probably isn’t finished, since it’s still four and a half months until it comes out; principal photography is certainly over but the director still is involved in post).

I’m a straight, married male and I’d watch this.  Could be good or weak, depends on whether we just saw all the good jokes in the trailer already.

For the record, Billy, I’m pretty sure I can find you films with “Ice Cube” and “Jason Momoa” pausing in the middle of action films for stuff like that.

This looks great! Please don’t be 150 min long, thanks.

Hey, I’m just glad it’s not a goddamn show. Everything has to be a series now, and it’s EXHAUSTING.

I miss Billy on the Street!

  • admnaismith-av says:

I’m buying a ticket based on the Jason Momoa pitch.

I had to quit following Billy Eichner on Twitter so I could keep enjoying him.
