Though the anticipated Marvel sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is expected to absolutely demolish the holiday box office (sorry to any Black Adam heads out there), advance sales for the film show it behind another 2022 MCU entry. According to Deadline, the Ryan Coogler-directed film holds $45 million in advance tickets through Sunday, making it about 20% behind Doctor Stranger In The Multiverse Of Madness at around the same point in time, which had $85 million in advance sales.

If we break this down in comparison to the other MCU film from this year, Thor: Love & Thunder (which amassed $48 million by its Thursday preview showings), Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is still ahead as ticket sales after Sunday aren’t being accounted for. In contrast, the original Black Panther held $55 million in advance tickets before going on to earn $202 million during its opening weekend.

If these numbers may make you think that the film will barely earn its projected opening of $175 million to $185 million, think again. Reminder: this is coming out just before the Thanksgiving holidays, when many kids will be out of school for a week and last-minute ticket buying will be happening, especially with family in town and people needing something to do. As Deadline points out, advance ticket sales don’t appear to be overwhelming for opening night, but instead are pretty evenly spread throughout the holiday weekend, as Veterans’ Day gives many people this Friday off.

There’s also the fact that this has been a movie that MCU fans have been eagerly waiting for, with the tear-jerker San Diego Comic-Con trailer standing at a whopping 31 million views on Marvel’s YouTube channel currently. Another important thing to note is that the first Black Panther film became a blockbuster hit, going on to become the third-highest-grossing MCU entry with $700 million, behind box office heavy hitters Spider-Man: No Way Home and Avengers: Endgame.

We’ll see how many records will be broken when Black Panther: Wakanda Forever premieres in theaters Friday, November 11.

i don’t understand how 45 million is 20% less than 85 million. i checked the deadline article to see if it was just a copying error over here but they’re saying the same thing. i know hollywood accounting is ‘unique’ but…by my math that’s 52% less.

I’m assuming the $85 million is the TOTAL advance ticket sales for Dr Strange but the article is comparing Black Panther and Dr Strange at the same point in time, meaning there are still a few days to add more ticket sales. So Black Panther’s $45 million is being compared to ~$54 million for Strange with two days remaining. That’s the only way I can make sense of it. It’s certainly worded confusingly in the article though.

AV Club article worded poorly or confusingly? That’s a new development

right but they even say it’s at the same point in time in the articles. i find it hard to believe dr strange 2 pre-sold that many more tickets in one day, but maybe?

Read the Deadline article – they worded it correctly. DS2 had 20% more at same point in time (Wednesday before debut) which means it likely had around $56m. It ended at $85m. That may seem like a big jump but it actually makes perfect sense that a good amount of people would make the decision to buy tickets a day or even hours ahead of the debut to me.

Might have something to do with certain Black “Activists” telling White People to stay home the first couple of Weekends, or that they should “give their tickets to poor Black people” and then wait outside the theater doors to “protect the Black folks” inside while they watch the movie. That combined with how awful the Trailers look, and the fact that Marvel is more concerned with “Wokeisms” than good storytelling. N’Amourrr? Give me a BREAK…🤢

Black Panther got its massive box office total from huge numbers of repeat viewers. With Wakanda Forever hitting Disney+ at some point, how many people are going to be willing to see it again and again?

White super hero greater than Black.

This entire article is just some writer’s opinion backed up with “facts”.
