Brie Larson just became Apple's latest addition to its hoard of future streaming stars

Aux Features TV

Operating on the principle that you don’t turn down the chance to work with a Best Actress Oscar winner and a bona fide superhero—especially if you’re Apple, of all people—the tech giant/entertainment wannabe has just locked down Brie Larson for a new series about the CIA. Specifically, Apple has just given a direct-to-series order to a TV adaptation of Amaryllis Fox’s memoir Undercover: Coming Of Age In The CIA, with Larson in the starring role.

This is just the latest instance of Apple—which has yet to have anything even remotely resembling a TV hit for its still mostly hypothetical streaming offerings, despite years of low-key trying—has tossed a project at an actor on a hot streak, hoping they’ll bring a bit of fire their way. Other talent recently recruited for the company’s long-in-the-works full-on streaming offering include Justin Lin, J.J. Abrams, Steve Carell, Kumail Nanjiani, Hailee Steinfeld, Damien Chazelle, Reese Witherspoon, and more—a sort of “throw a bunch of extremely talented people at the wall, see what sticks, then quietly apologize to their agents for that whole ‘throwing people’ thing” approach to content creation.

Larson’s having a big damn year; besides Captain Marvel—out in theaters this weekend—and Avengers: Endgame—she’s also set to star in a new Netflix project, I’m Thinking Of Ending Things, from Charlie Kaufman.

This seems dumb of whoever approved this decision. Did Netflix and Amazon pass? All indications are that Apple wants their streaming service to out Disney in the realm of all ages content where the equivalent of a G rating is the only acceptable result. Disney doesn’t do R but they are find with G, PG, and PG-13 depending on subject matter. Enforcement of this unofficial rule has included interfering with scripts, delaying production, and firing people for not producing content that is G rated. So something about a woman in the CIA…. I can’t imagine that being a G rated story line regardless of who the star is. Being the largest company in the world means Apple doesn’t give a $@#% what kind of star Brie Larson is when it comes to enforcing that rule.

Good, at least I know what to avoid.

Thank you for confirming that Apple yas yet to make any of their exclusive deals into reality, I was really starting to think I’d missed something. Have any of these even gone into production and then been bottle necked while Apple decides what their actual streaming series platform is going to be or?

I was on a jury with a guy two weeks back who worked on “a new show for that Apple service”. He was a set dresser and a really cool dude. Had tons of cool stories. He also recently did work on M Nights new show(which I think may also be Apple). So sets are getting done at the very least

They did put out Carpool Karaoke and Planet of the Apps a couple years back (the latter sounds like about the most navel-gazing choice possible), but none of the other stuff is out yet.

Sounds like Apple is going to have some very strong content that I hope I get to see when they release it on other platforms after nobody signs up for their likely overpriced and unremarkable streaming service.
