Brie Larson's directorial debut, Unicorn Store, gets a trailer

Brie Larson is taking a brief break from her Captain Marvel duties to make her global directorial debut. Per a recent press release from Netflix, Unicorn Store tells the story of a 20-something dreamer named Kit who moves back in with her parents after failing out of art school. After landing a temp job in a drab office, Kit receives a peculiar invitation to “The Store” from a snazzily dressed salesman played by Samuel L. Jackson. He offers to sell her a unicorn, but first she must prove herself as a worthy recipient of such a creature. Netflix released the trailer for the quirky comedy today.

Unicorn Store premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2017 and is finally seeing a wide release this April. The film also stars Joan Cusack and Bradley Whitford, and the script was penned by Samantha McIntyre, who was the executive story editor for FX’s Married.

You can make your own trip down to the Unicorn Store when it premieres on Netflix April 5.

    So a motherfucking unicorn?

  • gumbercules1-av says:

The Marvel cinematic universe adding unicorns isn’t the most far out idea they’ve had.

  • kimcardassian83-av says:

    This looks fucking unbearable.

I’d rather shop at the Jerk Store.

  • liebkartoffel-av says:

    Uh…huh.

  • yepperspartocho-av says:

Is Sam Jackson playing Hollywood Montrose? Because I’m into it… even though I completely made up the connection in my head.

  • peterklaven-av says:

I just don’t like her acting, the look she makes are acting class level, especially in captain marvel.

    Captain Pixie Dream Girl

skipped the article, scrolled down to video. watched the trailer and then scrolled back up to look for the word “quirky”. was not disappointed.

    • kirivinokurjr-av says:

Yeah, watching it made me think that’s probably what acid rain feels like on the skin.

      • bcfred-av says:

Blowing glitter on her completed painting looks like something my 11 year-old would do, while admitting it’s a bit childish.

      • thecapn3000-av says:

They could name it “Manic Pixie Dream Whatever”

        • firedragon400-av says:

The io9 article already called her a Manic Pixie Dream Girl, not surprisingly.

        • whiskeyordie-av says:

The “Manic Pixie Dream Girl” is most problematic because she exists solely to help a male protagonist, with no more depth or desires than to help some man she just met move forward. At least this seems to be about a woman trying to figure her self out.

          • triohead-av says:

This is like charm school. In the sequel she’ll be graduated and ready to be the MPDG she’s always dreamed of being.

          • whiskeyordie-av says:

Ahh, so this the origin story of the MPDG. After the “magical negro” helps her, she pays it forward as a MPDG.

  • JohnCon-av says:

When the universe gives you a Greta Gerwig, it also gives you a Brie Larson to maintain balance. Otherwise fabric/time/implosions and all that.

  • clawforce-av says:

I watched a test preview of this movie maybe a year ago? They may have made changes since, but it was a really, really tough watch then.

  • jrtaylor1111-av says:

Not that it makes too much of a difference in a movie about unicorns but when the mailman gives her the letter it goes from really small to really big.  If they can’t get the continuity right in the trailer I don’t have high hopes for the rest of it.

    Nick Furry.

  • notthesquirrellyourelookingfor-av says:

    1) I’m apparently officially old now since Zooey Deschanel has apparently aged out of these roles.2) The manic pixie dream girl is okay again as long as she’s only inspiring herself on her quirky adventure.

    • paulkinsey-av says:

You can’t be both a manic pixie dream girl and a protagonist. A key part of the trope is that the character has no goals of their own and is only a foil to inspire the main character to change.

    • beertown-av says:

Yeah, I mean, the whole disdain for that trope came from how she only exists to help the man along his quest. Here she exists to help herself, which is an improvement. But I mean.It’s.It’s clearly straight to Netflix for a reason

  • minimummaus-av says:

Look, I’m not going to lie. This is on Netflix and I have a Netflix account, so the odds are very high that I’m going to watch it even if the twee-ness is making my teeth ache.

  • youngrutiger3-av says:

Will not watch. Maybe if it were instead in the form of an Interactive VCR game, I would.

  • therocketpilot-av says:

Larson isn’t an only child, as I assumed but she was home-schooled by homeopathic chiropractor (do they only damage your spine an indetecable amount?) parents, so honestly this could’ve been a lot worse.

  • greatgodglycon-av says:

This film has already been thoroughly dunked on by the commentariat. No further comments needed.

  • firedragon400-av says:

Watching that trailer, it looks more like a setup to a porn fic than a proper movie. Pretty young blonde white girl is lured into a nondescript shop (complete with neon red sign) by a strong black man wearing a pimp suit and oozing charisma and tells her to, essentially, not be as stuffy and to live a little, with the reward being something with a long, pointy end that she’s been obsessing over since she was a teenager.

  • dankburner420-av says:

    she is a hilarious dingbat

  • Rainbucket-av says:

Hmmm it’s not giving me the vibe I want from more Larson-and-Jackson, BUT I have high hopes someone will overdub this into the most Captain Marvel’s most confusing mission ever.

  • mattthecatania-av says:

Unicorn Store kind of feels like Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium, for which I’m onboard.

    • joadys-av says:

MMWE was a joyful celebration of wonder and discovery and imagination. This is just narcissistic and childish quirk I’d guess

  • shindean-av says:

Netflix: “We don’t need Marvel, nor are we their puppets! Cancel all their shows, that’ll teach them!”
Also Netflix: “Give the stars of the biggest Marvel movie of the month a movie, we need that Marvel attention!”

  • docprof-av says:

I read the comments before watching the trailer so my expectation were very low going in, and oh boy, that really looks horrendous.

  • officermilkcarton-av says:

This looks great, you grumpy fuckers. Haters are the ones who probably need to watch this the most to learn how to have magic in their hearts again.

  • theodorexxfrostxxmca-av says:

The most outlandish thing about this movie is Sam Jackson’s hat.

  • ifsometimesmaybe-av says:

Hi, I too watched the trailer, and must immediately flock to the comment section to give my ironically unbearable gripe!

  • johnyripman420-av says:

    Straight to bargain bin!

  • pinkkittie27-av says:

I want her suits. They are incredible!
