Call Me By Your Name's book sequel gets a title and a release date

Aux Features Books

It’s unclear now if anybody other than Luca Guadagnino really thinks a sequel to his 2017 movie adaptation of Call me By Your Name is a good idea, but André Aciman—who wrote the original Call Me By Your Name novel—at least has an idea for a sequel of his own. Back in December, he teased that he was writing a sequel to his book, presumably having been encouraged by the success of the movie, and now we know what his sequel will be called, when it will be released, and what it’ll be about. That’s pretty much all the things we ever need to know!

As reported by Vulture, the latest installment in the romantic adventures of Elio and Oliver will be called Find Me (not Find Me By Your Name, just Find Me), and it’ll be available on October 29, 2019. In an interesting twist, though, Find Me won’t be exclusively about Elio and Oliver. Presumably taking some inspiration from the film, the sequel will also feature Elio’s father Samuel as a more prominent character, with him going on a trip to Rome to visit Elio—who has become a classical pianist since the events of the original book. Meanwhile, Oliver (who now has sons “who are nearly grown”) is also considering a return to Europe, where he will presumably be reunited with Elio.

Also interesting: This is completely different from the sequel that Guadagnino envisioned for his film last year. His idea was to have the story center on Elio becoming aware of and reckoning with the AIDS crisis in the ‘80s, though he didn’t mention how Oliver (or Elio’s father, for that matter) might get involved. That’s probably irrelevant, though, because now Guadagnino could just make an adaptation of Find Me instead.

Is it a sort of Gremlins 2 deal where the peach the guy had sex with is pregnant and searching for her baby daddy?

Aciman’s book, like all of his books, was an arty almost-stream-of-conciousness type novel, with almost no plot, but a lot of speculating and circling back about Elio’s every thought and worry and feeling. I feel like a lot of people, coming to Aciman’s writing from the movie, are going to be bored. Though the peach-fucking from the film does happen.

i loved this movie, and aside from the obvious things (lookin at you, peach scene), the part that really stuck with me afterward — haunts me, really — is the extended scene with the father at the end. up until that moment, i somehow missed the pretty glaring idea that the father was *also* intensely attracted to Oliver, but had to let those feelings go unexpressed as he watched his son’s feelings become apparent. the sorrow in his voice as he tries to comfort Elio is just breathtaking. that is to say, a sequel? yes, i’m in.

I was so oblivious to the father even perceiving his son’s attraction until that scene and definitely did not recognize his own. Thanks for pointing that out!

well, i went through the movie sort of assuming that the parents are often a lot wiser about things than their kids realize, and they seemed like very worldly parents. but it was particularly his comment about how a person can be attracted to someone and that someone may not be attracted to them in turn, and thus oblivious, and how painful that can be that made me gasp and go, “oh!… ohhhhhhh…”

Aciman’s books subsequent to Name have been increasingly pretentious and… dull.  So I suppose this has to at least be a semi return to form?  Right?  Sequels always are, right?

Big Gay Armie’s Big Gay Love Story?

      • augustintrebuchon-av says:

Oh, he should have never been in that movie. It’s funny how everyone expressed awe at his acting. That’s probably because he sucked 10% less in that one than in his other films (if that.)Sad, actually, because he’s quite charming and interesting in promotion interviews.

        • thekinjacaffeinespider-av says:

But in that one, shouldn’t he have sucked at least 10% more?‘Cause it’s gay.

If you actually believe straights don’t suck, you may have missed the careers of many straight actors and singers.

No. That (thinking that the father wanted a special relationship with Oliver) couldn’t be further from what was depepicted. If you listen to the father’s speech, he alluded to the idea that at some earlier point in his life (pre-Oliver), he had the chance to experience what his son possibly had. (Remember he admits he does not know exactly what Elio has done, or what type of relationship Elio had with Oliver.) There is no glaring suggestion of the father wanting Oliver.

I’m just wondering if there are any quality novels or plays written by gay/bi men about their own sexual and romantic relationships with other gay/bi men—specifically before and during the AIDS crisis—that could perhaps be adapted instead.
