Who needs booby-trapped temples and hidden tombs when you’ve got old home video VHS tapes? That’s where the real treasure is hidden. One YouTuber recently stumbled across some apparently never-before-seen footage from the making of Raiders Of The Lost Ark, and it’s a discovery as exciting as Harrison Ford’s Indy first laying his hands on that shiny golden idol.
The 44-minute video, first spotted by ScreenCrush, shows the behind-the-scenes of Indy’s memorable escape from the Peruvian temple on his buddy Jock’s biplane. YouTuber Joe Hughes, who found the footage in his grandfather’s VHS collection, describes in the video description that his grandfather’s neighbor was a pilot who rented a plane to the film’s crew in Hawaii. Even better, said neighbor and his family got to hang out with the crew during production and capture a bunch of cool BTS footage.
While the video has no audio—Hughes says he plans to upload a commentary track from his grandpa with more details—it’s still a pretty awesome find, full of shots of Ford balancing on the plane’s floats, a young George Lucas chatting with the crew, and a bunch of kids having the summer vacay of their life riding on the top of boats.

I knew there had been an accident where they ran the plane aground into the riverbank. There are photos I’ve seen of the wrecked plane. But this has got actual video of the accident happening! It’s a real treat for someone who loves this movie like I do.

John Williams played the Indy theme at the Hollywood Bowl last summer, and about halfway through it, some idiot who was clearly from LA started talking loudly to her friend about how racist the beginning sequence of ‘Raiders’ is, and how Indy should be in jail for stealing their property. Like, right in the middle of the goddamn song.I shushed them loudly, and got very bad vibes from them for the rest of the night. Which, of course, I enjoyed immensely. Raiders of the Lost Ark is my favorite film of all time. It is utter perfection. You do not talk through any part of it, especially about how racist you think it is. You want to think that? Fine. I’m sure there’s some element of truth to it somewhere. But you keep it to your motherfucking self while the movie is playing, you awful monster. You keep it to your motherfucking self.
Folks from L.A. have been treating Raiders quite rudely of late. That’s why they’re moving to Vegas instead.

Tapes….why did it have to be tapes?
It always bugged me how Jock’s (sp?) accent changed between his two overdubbed lines – the first one sounded like he was trying to do a weak Aussie drawl, while the second was pure U.S. of A. And poor Reggie, doomed to be foreshadowing.
