Christopher Nolan named new king of England as Oppenheimer rules the BAFTAs
With a handful of big wins, the British filmmaker finally took home his first BAFTA trophies

It’s starting to look more and more like all of the Oscars will be Christopher Nolan’s to lose in March, with the director adding a bunch of BAFTAs to his trophy cabinet today—just a week after the Oppenheimer filmmaker won the top prize at the DGA awards, effectively guaranteeing Best Director at the Academy Awards. But Oppenheimer didn’t just take home Best Director from the British Academy, it also won Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.), Best Lead Actor (Cillian Murphy), Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Original Score, and Best Film.
The two of those going to Nolan himself, Best Director and Best Film, are his first two BAFTAs ever, despite the fact that he is a prominent and successful British director (perhaps the lack of recognition was payback for Nolan’s brother being American).
But even though it was Oppenheimer’s day, it wasn’t the only film that won a shiny BAFTA face. Poor Things picked up plenty of awards, including Best Production Design, Costume Design, Best Makeup And Hair, and Best Lead Actress (for Emma Stone), while The Holdovers won for Casting and Best Supporting Actress (Da’Vine Joy Randolph). The Zone Of Interest was another multi-winner in big categories, getting Outstanding British Film and Best Film Not In The English Language.
