Claire Foy wears the crown in first trailer for Netflix’s The Crown

Continuing its trend of releasing very long trailers, Netflix has dropped a four-minute-plus preview of its upcoming drama, The Crown. Created by Peter Morgan (Rush), The Crown follows all the political, familial, and romantic drama of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign. Morgan is no stranger to political dramas (Frost/Nixon) or royal families (The Other Boleyn Girl and The Queen, which also focused on Queen Elizabeth II). As we previously reported, The Crown will star John Lithgow as Winston Churchill, Doctor Who’s Matt Smith as Philip Mountbatten, the Duke Of Edinburgh, Mad Men’s Jared Harris as George VI and Wolf Hall’s Claire Foy as the Queen herself.

The trailer begins in silence, with Foy donning the crown in question (“it’s not as easy as it looks”). It then delves into all the juicy drama we can expect from a series about the British royal family: brother turning on brother, big decisions made for love, a country split down the middle, political marriages, musings on morality and privacy. It’s all very grand and yet subdued, as royal drama tends to be.

The 10-episode first season is set to debut later this year, but no official drop date has been announced.
