Daniel Radcliffe would like to do a rom-com with Quinta Brunson, his “perfect height match”

Radcliffe has only ever done one rom-com, but he'd like to do more

Daniel Radcliffe has had a good movie career, successfully transitioning from the Harry Potter movies to things that aren’t the Harry Potter movies (he did a movie about wizards in which he pointedly did not play a wizard!), but there is one genre that has mostly eluded him: romantic comedies. Speaking with Variety ahead of the Emmys on Monday, Radcliffe noted that he did one rom-com (referring to Swiss Army Man, obviously, in which he played a farty boner corpse who developed a relationship with Paul Dano) and he really enjoyed the experience, so he’d like to do more. And better yet, he even knows that his rom-com partner should be Abbott Elementary’s Quinta Brunson, who he says is his “perfect height match” (they were also in Weird: The Al Yankovic Story together).

Radcliffe seems to be implying that he and Brunson are the same height, making them a perfect match, but Google says that’s not true—he’s 5'5" and she’s 4'11"—but that problem could be solved by carefully positioning the camera so the perspective could trick the viewer into thinking they’re the same height (a twist on what Peter Jackson did for The Lord Of The Rings). Someone would have to ask Brunson about it, since this is just something he made up on the spot, but who wouldn’t want to be in a romantic comedy with the inexplicably buff Daniel Radcliffe?

Also, we were joking up above. The one rom-com that Radcliffe did before now was 2013’s What If, the movie where a pre-Star Wars Adam Driver screams “I just had sex and I’m about to eat nachos.” That’s fun, because he doesn’t really play those characters anymore, but that’s still definitely something that Enzo Ferrari would think even if he didn’t say it out loud.

Adam Driver screaming about nachos was the best thing about What If. The second best thing is that the title of that movie was actualy The F Word but the MPAA threw a hissy fit, because they are a bunch of whiny fucks.

It’s a rom com, so by “perfect height match,” he probably means “man is a few inches taller than woman in heels.”

Exactly.  There aren’t many that deviate from that formula.  Maybe When Harry Met Sally.

That’s even why Claudia Wells played Marty’s girlfriend in Back to the Future and not Melora Hardin. Hardin is 6″ shorter than Eric Stoltz but an inch or two taller than Michael J. Fox, so they opted to recast when Fox replaced Stoltz.

Yes! I’m quite sure that’s what he meant, not that they were the same height.

I would buy my ticket today for this hypothetical movie.

Yes, please. And I haven’t watched a romcom in years.

I was talking with my wife about this and why I don’t like Romcoms. It’s not because I don’t like romance, it’s being Romcom setting are beyond cliche and boring. Sleepy towns and the big city. I want high concept romcoms. It’s why I’m digging more Bollywood and other foreign films. It’s seems like overseas they are more inclined to mash genres for a movie. Why can’t we had a Lord of the Rings romcom, or. Star Trek Romcom or hell even a horror Romcom? Why do 99% have to be about a big city girl going to a small town or a a small town girl trying to make it in the big city. Why can’t it be about a Shire Hobbit finding love in Minas Tirith?

Maybe don’t rent videos from Cliche Warehouse? The genre is broader than you’re describing.

Exactly. More of this. Hell Hot Fuzz is a romcom about two men

Exactly this! And while we’re at it, one of the finest RomComs in recent years is “I Love You, Man” where the ‘ROM’ is platonic romance blossoming between two friends. (it’s not perfect by any means but it’s hearts in the best place, the cast are game and its got steady laughs). I want more PlatRomComs*.*this isn’t a joke, I genuinely find the navigation of a healthy burgeoning platonic friendship really interesting.

Out of all the great things in Top Gun: Maverick, the thing I keep thinking about is the romance subplot between Penny and Pete, because it’s just so fucking…normal. Mature. Plus the gender roles are fully reversed: she’s the stable one, she’s the one who takes the initiative, and it’s her who seeks him at the end.

To which I say what about Your Highness? Wasn’t that an out of the ordinary fantasy romcom?

    • igotlickfootagain-av says:

Or a ‘The Ring’ rom-com, where the demon girl who crawls out of the TV is flustered to find she’s just manifested in the house of her dream man.

The Hobbit Love Story we’ve all been waiting for!

  • genetix-av says:

They were also in the third season of Miracle Workers together.

“Radcliffe seems to be implying that he and Brunson are the same height”

He did not imply anything. You inferred meaning that isn’t there.

If he had meant they were the same height he’d have GOD DAMN WELL SAID THAT THEY’RE THE SAME HEIGHT.

For Christ’s fucking sake, why does nobody on the internet understand how to simply read the words and accept the meaning? You don’t HAVE to fucking add your own meaning to everything.

  • igotlickfootagain-av says:

One of my favourite Daniel Radcliffe quotes is, “I used to be quite self conscious about my height, but then I thought, ‘Fuck that, I’m Harry Potter’.”
