Disney and Marvel Studios’ decision to bring back Charlie Cox’s Daredevil for a new series called Daredevil: Born Again has been a real roller coaster for fans of Netflix’s Daredevil series. It was exciting to hear about the show and that Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin would also be returning, plus the news that Jon Bernthal would come back as the big, bad Punisher, but then it was reported that Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson would not be returning as Karen Page and Foggy Nelson—a truly baffling decision, since Daredevil has always been defined by his relationships to the people around him, especially Foggy.

Then the whole project was paused for a full creative overhaul after Marvel Studios bosses were particularly unimpressed by what now-former head writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman had come up with (including the fact that the show had become more of a semi-serious legal show about a blind attorney who didn’t even put on a superhero costume until four episodes in).

But then Echo, which featured D’Onofrio’s Kingpin in a prominent supporting role and had a cameo from Cox’s Daredevil, was really good and seemed like a reassuring sign that Marvel knew what it was doing with these “street-level” characters. Now the good times are going to keep going, with Comic Book reporting that not only will Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson apparently be coming back for Born Again, but that they’ll be joined by Wilson Bethel’s Benjamin Poindexter—a.k.a. Bullseye, the villain who made a particularly brutal impact on the final season of the Netflix show.

Bullseye never got a supervillain costume or name in the old show, so bringing him back would be a good way to do justice to the character’s comics legacy (where he’s the most iconic Daredevil villain, past maybe even the Kingpin himself) and Bethel’s chilling performance. None of this has been confirmed by Marvel, and Comic Book doesn’t say where it got this information, but it’ll be cool if it’s true.

Just as long as Iron Fist died on the way back to his home planet.

    • danposluns-av says:

As bad as Iron Fist was, the second season ended super strong IMO. Colleen Wing as the new Iron Fist on the streets of NYC with a freaking glowing sword and Danny and Ward finally reconciled and off having silly adventures overseas as brothers. As problematic and frequently dull as that show was, it was one of the few Marvel Netflix season finales that left me jazzed for what was coming next.

        TYPHOID MARY!

      • akabrownbear-av says:

I honestly didn’t think Iron Fist was that bad as a show. A lot of the supporting cast was good, especially Jessica Henwick and Tom Pelphrey. They just totally and completely botched the casting of Danny Rand. Finn Jones may have looked the part but his acting was dull and it was leaked that he had little to no interest in preparing for the action sequences. They needed a true action star for the show.

        • robgrizzly-av says:

Fully agreed. If anything, I really liked the material with Pelphrey and the father in Season 1. And Season 2 was smart to lean in more on Henwick as they prepped her to take over. Jones was ok (I thought he acquitted himself well enough in the fights, on short notice) but Danny was written so terribly, he never stood a chance.

        • bobwworfington-av says:

Finn Jones can just stay at whatever Applebee’s he’s assistant managing and they can recast Iron Fist.

        • amaltheaelanor-av says:

Hot take: I think Iron Fist was a bit underrated. Its second season was really great. Like you said, it had a great supporting cast. And that ending! I’m still disappointed we didn’t get more. Also, I know everyone hates Danny…but the guy spent second season living poor so he could understand a working class life, and then voluntarily passed the Iron Fist onto someone else because he recognized he wasn’t worthy of it and it was a negative thing for him to have it. There are much, much worse characters elsewhere in the MCU.

          • Ruhemaru-av says:

I mean… he’s still better than Star Lord I guess?
And Cassie Lang went from adorable in Ant-Man 2 to insufferable in Ant-Man 3. Granted, that could apply to all the returning characters in Ant-Man 3. Hope, Scott, laser-head guy, and the warrior lady were pretty much the only likeable beings in that film. Though that version of Kang was a better villain than most solo-film villains in the MCU.
Secret Invasion was just full of bad characters and dragged good ones down with it.

          • amaltheaelanor-av says:

            That’s funny – Star-Lord is literally the first person I would’ve named.

          • Ruhemaru-av says:

Out of all the GotG, Star Lord is the blandest of the bunch and never seemed to develop as a character. His arc in every film is just him running into danger where the only reason he’ll survive is because the actions of his allies usually ends up saving him at the last second. Plus he’s the one that ruined the plan to get the Gauntlet away from Thanos in Infinity War.
In comparison, Nebula has had one hell of a character arc that included starting out as a villain, mending her sibling relationship, killing a past version of herself, and somehow becoming cyborg space foster mom to an entire city housed in the head of a celestial. I can’t actually think of any character in the MCU that has developed or accomplished less given a large amount of screen time. That is even including Secret Invasion’s stupidity with the Skrull and Maria Hill.

          • amaltheaelanor-av says:

I would love for them to shift focus to Nebula, who is a much more interesting character, and just forget Star-Lord ever existed. But I already know it’s not going to happen.

      • redneckrampage-av says:

And now to try and make the brain dead, woke imbeciles happy, the kind who called it problematic, they can race swap the character to be an Asian because how dare a white kid ever be trained in martial arts

      • murrychang-av says:

I thought it was pretty ironic that Colleen yelled at Danny all season for solving problems with violence but then she gets the powers and is shown solving a problem with…violence! That ending made her character super hypocritical.
The season should have been Danny and Ward’s overseas adventure, that looks like something I would have wanted to see!

        • danposluns-av says:

I thought it was pretty ironic that Colleen yelled at Danny all season for solving problems with violence but then she gets the powers and is shown solving a problem with…violence! That ending made her character super hypocritical.Ok fair, but, counterpoint: she was already the coolest thing on the show and now she has a COOL GLOWING SWORD

          • murrychang-av says:

That’s true but it just felt flat to me.I’m the only weirdo who liked season 1 though: The story of a kid who saw his parents killed in front of him, was captured and tortured by insane monks for years and then returns to civilization only to find his parent’s best friend had totally screwed them over was actually compelling to me.So my opinion is not mainstream on this one lol

    • djclawson-av says:

Danny is pretty funny as long as he exists solely to be the butt of everyone’s jokes.

I actually liked his cameo in Luke Cage. Finn Jones is still not my first choice in casting, but he clearly wasn’t the actual problem with the show.

      • whaleinsheepsclothing-av says:

Jones was the reason every fight scene he did in S1 sucked.

        • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

that’s not true, every time he had his hood up and you couldn’t see his face he was great.

          • zeroine-av says:

‘”that’s not true, every time he had his hood up and you couldn’t see his face he was great.”’I want you to reread what you wrote: you couldn’t see his face? How do you know if it’s him and not his stunt double?

      • joeinthebox66-av says:

His episode in Luke Cage was the best use of him on Netflix, IMO. Even the little character moment of him taking off his shoes before entering the barber shop, showed the writers knew how to write that character better than on his own show.

[I went off half-cocked and said only things it turns out everyone else here has already said, and they should have, because those things were awesome.]

  • jodyjm13-av says:

I remain skeptical that Disney will really continue the look and feel of Netflix’s series, but this is possibly a sign that they may come close. Also, given the lack of avatars on the site, I see that Kinja is continuing its slow disintegration into utter unusability.

  • coatituesday-av says:

Good news about Foggy and Karen. I think Elden Henson and Deborah Woll were really good and I thought it was a misstep not to include them in Born Again. So I guess they must have listened to me!

    • igotlickfootagain-av says:

I remember from the original AV Club reviews that a lot of the commentariat disliked Henson vehemently, but I appreciated his Foggy a lot, particularly when he discovered Matt’s secret. The sense of betrayal was real and visceral.

      • necgray-av says:

You’re not wrong. I really like Foggy and was put off by the commentariat’s general sense of hate for him.

  • djclawson-av says:

So it took them (checks calendar) 5 years to figure out that they should just continue the super popular old show?

    • dr-boots-list-av says:

      Top. Men.

    • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

yeah and they only had to fire the entire creative team and start from scratch once.

    • briliantmisstake-av says:

I thought the netflix contract specified they couldn’t do anything for four years or so?

      • thegreetestfornoraisin-av says:

It was for two years, and that was up as of 2020.

      • joeinthebox66-av says:

Disney couldn’t do anything with the Netflix characters for 2 years after their cancellations. I think the 2 year cancellation period was up when Disney+ put the Netflix shows up for streaming and Matt Murdock was able to have a cameo on Spider-Man: No Way Home.

        • briliantmisstake-av says:

Gotcha. The time gap is slightly less egregious with that contract stuff thrown in, plus covid, etc.

          • joeinthebox66-av says:

Yeah, I wasn’t aware myself exactly when Netflix cancelled everything. It felt longer, I guess because Disney was trying to figure out what to do with them and whether or not they wanted to bring back the same actors.

    • akabrownbear-av says:

The rumor I read is that the original plan was that Foggy and Karen would have been murdered off-screen and the season would deal with Matt coming to terms with it and becoming Daredevil again. And holy shit, I can’t believe someone had to review a professional writer’s script and tell that what a terrible idea that was.

      • djclawson-av says:

Yeah, that’s the rumor. That Elden Henson even filmed the scene. They were actually pretty far into filming when the writer’s strike broke out and they were picketed for continuing to film. If that strike hadn’t happened, they probably would have finished shooting and just ran with what they had already spent money filming like Marvel generally does.

        • gargsy-av says:

“Yeah, that’s the rumor. That Elden Henson even filmed the scene.”

So the rumor is that they were going to be killed offscreen AND that Elden Hensen even filmed the……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..OFF-SCREEN MURDER.

God, some people are too fucking stupid to breathe.

Try, just TRY, to be a LITTLE bit less colossally stupid, ok?

          GOD!

      • joeinthebox66-av says:

I mean, looking at Phase 4 and going into Phase 5, there was a lot of mismanagement and terrible ideas.

      • croig2-av says:

I heard that rumor and was not planning to watch the show as a result.  I”m glad someone came to their senses.

      • igotlickfootagain-av says:

Everything I’ve heard about that original story sounds awful. Not having Matt appear as Daredevil for the first four episodes might work (stressing “might”) if this was the first time around, but we’ve already seen Cox go through his journey of becoming Daredevil. Why hold that back a second time?

    • redneckrampage-av says:

Sure, all you have to do is ignore that they couldn’t do anything with it for 3-4 years after they got control of them back from Netflix

    • shindean-av says:

I will give them the only benefit of a doubt that going from a Netflix audience (that was established) to a Disney+ one would not automatically be successful.
I mean, MODOK had to die so that Echo could fly on Hulu.

    • ofaycanyouseeme-av says:

I knew a Meatwad from Georgia, but he kept babbling about “the bun is in your mind”I wonder if you two are related?

    • disqustqchfofl7t--disqus-av says:

Except, it wasn’t super popular. Which, you know, is why they cancelled it.

    • aledore-av says:

I don’t understand why people making shows and movies keep making huge mistakes while every fan on the street can come up with something obvious that could be successful. As an example, no fan would’ve come up with the 1st two seasons of Picard, but the 3rd season could be a fanfic.

I said this exact scenario last week here.

    • zeroine-av says:

‘”Now we need Alice Eve to finally get that Typhoid Mary payoff!”’I’m pretty sure I saw her in a Massage Envy Commercial

  • robgrizzly-av says:

Something as small as Baron Zemo finally getting his mask was enough for me to feel like Falcon and the Winter Soldier was worth it. Yet Echo couldn’t even be bothered to showcase her defining white facepaint. Here’s hoping Bullseye gets to be Bullseye. There are no guarantees.

  • bobwworfington-av says:

It’s fine to bring them all back, but I remain adamant that Feige doesn’t have to respect every fish-brained decision the Netflix folks made.Killing Ben Urich and Leland Owsley was idiotic. Those are key supporting characters in DD. Same with Purple Man.
    All canon ain’t good canon.

    • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

in fact i actively think it’s a bad sign that they’ve been courting so much nostalgia with non-mcu stuff lately. feels like the only trick they have left.when ‘a good sign for the future’ is just remaking something from 10 years ago that’s a bit troubling.

      • bobwworfington-av says:

It’s not just nostalgia. I can tell you I live with a child who saw Matt Murdock for the first time in the NWH cameo. He then devoured the series. Disney+ brought new audiences to the Netflix stuff.

      • stalkyweirdos-av says:

Sure are a lot of people invested in the “every thing Marvel is a bad thing and not at all analogous to things that happened back when the narrative was different” narrative these days.

        • briandavion-av says:

I noticed it started around the time a certin florida politican picked a fight with Disney, not that I’m at ALL suggesting there’s a political angle at play here, not at all

      • kikaleeka-av says:

Defenders Saga isn’t “non-MCU stuff”, though.

    • smurph0404-av says:

To be fair, killing off the best villians in their first big appearance has always been the MCU’s thing. It’s a miracle that Kingpin is still around.

      • bobwworfington-av says:

        I’m a truther.
        Never saw Obadiah’s body.
        Abomination is back.
Whiplash – Ok, yeah, dead, but Hammer is still around!
Loki stayed. Red Skull is somewhere out there.

Whatever was in Thor 2, yeah, OK. Dead. So is Pierce.

Ultron can come back! Kilmonger can come back! Hela, whatever Mads Mikkelsen was doing, and Jude Law can all come back!

        BRING THEM ALL BACK!

        • Ruhemaru-av says:

Honestly, Hela could’ve survived just by taking a portal or something. She was introduced taking a portal to where Odin died from wherever she was sealed away. Just toss in that New Asgard counts as a power source for her since she’s got a conceptual thing going with her domain. I mean, Thor is apparently the God of Thunder, who’s divinity is somehow bound to his hammer and not bound to it at the same time and the guy uses lightning more than anything else.

        • smurph0404-av says:

If they follow through with the multiverse convergence stuff in Secret Wars, I think it would be cool to have a ‘dark universe’ where all the villians won and formed their own group. Iron Man is Obidiah, Loki instead of Thor, Red Skull instead of Cap, Mads Mikkelsen or Mordo instead of Strange, Jude Law instead of Carol, Tombstone (or Bullseye?) and maybe Taskmaster instead of Clint and Natasha, Aobomination instead of Hulk, Killmonger is Black Panther.

    • coatituesday-av says:

Killing Ben Urich and Leland Owsley was idiotic. I agree 100% on Ben Urich, but… they dropped a hint or two about Owlsley’s son. They left themselves open to have him show up and be the actual Owl Don’t know if that was an actual plan, but they had themselves an out.[Similarly, in the first Doctor Strange movie, they mentioned Joshua Drumm. Nice bit of foreshadowing for the arrival of Jericho Drumm, Brother Voodoo. In my dreams, I suppose.]

    • igotlickfootagain-av says:

I was convinced for about a full episode that Urich wasn’t dead and they were just faking his funeral to make sure Fisk didn’t keep coming after him or his wife, simply because it seemed like that bad an idea to kill that character. Not only was it a great role and beautifully acted, it just made sense to have a journalist that could help the team out when needed.

    • macthegeek-av says:

Hey, if D+ wants to bring back Ben Urich, I won’t complain.

  • realtimothydalton-av says:

  • zeroine-av says:

‘”All of Daredevil’s old friends (and enemies) are apparently coming back for the rebooted Born AgainKaren, Foggy, and Bullseye are all supposedly coming back for Disney Plus’ Daredevil: Born Again”’So we’re getting a rehash of the final seasons of Netflix’s Daredevil post Defenders?

  • handsomecool-av says:

Oops I guess I’m in the minority because I thought both Karen Page and (especially) Foggy were boring and often straight up awful. The chemistry that Charlie Cox had with Tatiana Maslany in She-Hulk was amazing and I just want more of stuff like that.

    • disqustqchfofl7t--disqus-av says:

Their whole role in the series was to soak up screentime by investigating things that Daredevil had already investigated.

  • gterry-av says:

That’s good that they are coming back but the fact that Deborah Ann Woll is even available to be in Daredevil blows my mind. She is really good and ridiculously hot so why is her schedule not completely booked up.

    • shivakamini-somakandarkram-av says:

She refused to do nudity on True Blood and it definitely hurt her career when she got labeled difficult. She does her own thing, she was on Daredevil for years, she’s Loki’s mom in GoW, and she does a lot of D&D live play stuff I believe.

      • gterry-av says:

Well that is disappointing of them. I probably watched at least one more season of True Blood than I would have otherwise just because of Deborah Ann Woll.  And at least if she is getting work still that is good, although I wouldn’t mind her on tv more.
