The comedian still doesn't get why his words were so harmful, though

In a new standup video, Dave Chappelle says he’s open to speaking with Netflix’s trans employees about the transphobic comments he made in his Netflix comedy special, The Closer.

“It’s been said in the press that I was invited to speak to the transgender employees of Netflix and I refused. That is not true,” he says in the clip.

However, it seems he still doesn’t completely get why people were so alarmed and hurt by his words, saying, “If they had invited me I would have accepted it, although I am confused about what we would be speaking about. I said what I said, and boy, I heard what you said. My God, how could I not? You said you want a safe working environment at Netflix. It seems like I’m the only one who can’t go to the office.”

He adds, “I want everyone in this audience to know that even though the media frames it that it’s me versus that community, that’s not what it is. Do not blame the LGBTQ community for any of this. It’s about corporate interests, and what I can say, and what I cannot say.”

He also says, “To the transgender community, I am more than willing to give you an audience, but you will not summon me. I am not bending to anybody’s demands.”

He continues, “And if you want to meet with me, I am more than willing to, but I have some conditions: first of all, you cannot come if you have not watched my special from beginning to end. You must come to a place of my choosing and time of my choosing. And thirdly, you must admit that Hannah Gadsby is not funny.

He additionally claims that some of his own trans friends had no problem with his comments, saying, “For the record, and I need you to know this, everyone I know from that community has been loving and supportive, so I don’t know what this nonsense is about.”

This video comes a week after Netflix employees and stars like Jonathan Van Ness, Jameela Jamil, and Angelica Ross—participated in and supported a walkout, protesting Netflix’s mishandling of the situation, as well as the firing of employee B. Pagels-Minor. Pagels-Minor was accused of leaking confidential information about the comedy special and an internal memo from co-CEO Sarandos, in which he stood by Chappelle’s comments. (Sarandos later admitted he “screwed up.”) Pagels-Minor denies being responsible for the leak.

The backlash doesn’t seem to have harmed Chappelle’s career much. The comedian has a tour coming up in November.

You know what I was thinking about this morning? He did this bit for months live, presumably, before putting it in his special. That means hundreds or thousands of people saw it and were cool with it. Woof.

    • bhlam-22-av says:

That’s what has bothered me about this whole saga. Chappelle thinks and says whatever, and he’s the wrong person to be talking about queerness and trans topics. That’s one thing. What’s scary is that there is a not-insignificant audience who is totally like, “Dave Chappelle, speaking the truth. That’s my guy.” So many people are willing to buy into his charismatic obliviousness without a second thought.

      • bio-wd-av says:

After four years of Trump are you surprised people think this way?

      • gildie-av says:

Courting a certain crowd (who are hard to define exactly but being vocally “anti-PC” and having a trollish bent is a big part of it) is probably really lucrative. I’ve heard Louis CK shows are always sold old now and he’s playing some big venues (for a comedian, at least) and this is who his audience is now. I don’t know if Chapelle is heading that way deliberately or he just enjoys the fight no matter where it takes him, but that’s probably who he’s going to be playing to from here as well.

      • davechappellefan-av says:

Someone didn’t watch the special all the way through to the end

    • graymangames-av says:

Never underestimate what low standards mainstream comedy fans have.

We can bash them all we want, but Jeff Dunham and Carlos Mencia gaining success didn’t just come out of nowhere.

      • turbotastic-av says:

A lot of “comedy” fans just want to see a famous person on stage. What they actually say is immaterial. “I saw Larry the Cable Guy LIVE last night! It was totally worth the $70 ticket to be close to Guy I Know From TV! His act? Oh, he just read from the phone book for two hours. Standing ovation at the end.”

    • huh1-av says:

Im going to watch it again just for you.

    • theonewatcher-av says:

What “bit”? You obviously didn’t even watch the special.

    • larry-o-av says:

That’s probably one of the biggest and most frustrating things about this whole controversy: It’s not just that his comedian friends are either staying silent so they don’t have to risk the professional benefits that come from their association with him, or are trying to make room for him and his non-apologies. And it’s not just the famous, rich, celebrity types that seem to be his primary sounding board giving him explicit and tacit approval to use Trans folks as his primary instrument for fighting this fucking insipid “cancel culture” boogeyman. It’s that he’s legitimately giving people permission to indulge their biases and ignorance regarding Trans folks. Chappelle is cool. Chappelle is respected. Chappelle is basically a living comedy legend, the anointed son of Pryor and Murphy and Mooney and Gregory, etc. So when he decides to let people know “hey, it’s 100% safe and okay and honestly RIGHT to push all in on denigrating and demeaning Trans folks” – that shit sticks. And the most painful bit is this: Remember that this dude once CANCELED HIMSELF (the only possible person who ever could cancel Chappelle is, and always was, Chappelle) to the tune of 50 mil from Comedy Central because he thought that exact same thing was accidentally happening to Black folks via shitty white people misinterpreting and misusing his comedy for hurtful purposes. He spent $50 mil on preserving his conscience over continuing down a path he didn’t believe in. More than half the reason he’s considered a legend is because he walked from that contract. And here he is, over 20 years later, not recognizing how far he’s fallen from that moment, doing the same thing he was afraid of TO trans folks, ON PURPOSE, while crying about not getting his fucking documentary booked as if that’s the real injustice here. To quote the Bunk: It makes me sick, motherfucker, to see how far we done fell.

      • schmowtown-av says:

I think the most telling of the whole special and of his audience (and perhaps the majority of our society) is when he spells out what being a feminist is, and that he didn’t realize he was one. If most people are learning this along with him, then they surely aren’t brushed up on the issues plaguing the LGBTQ+ community.

    • kareembadr-av says:

Right. And as the audiences in his taped specials show, his audience of fans is primed to laugh at anything he says. I barely thought his last special was comedy. It was confident. It was strongly-worded opinion. But I found myself wondering what the live audience was roaring with laughter about. Hell, even he has stated that he can’t trust “his audience” to give him honest feedback about whether he’s doing good work anymore.

      • suckadick59595-av says:

Which is ironic, considered that one criticism of *Nanette* is that it wasn’t really a “comedy special,” but more like a “spoken word” or a TED Talk.I mean, I loved *Nanette*. But, sure. It wasn’t a typical comedy special/set. The way you describe Chappelle’s stuff… he’s trying to dunk on her (which is … something and him trying to set the terms of the “conversation” vis a vis he’s not operating in good faith) but he basically did the same kind of thing. Just got on stage and gave his opinions, rather than crafting a really good set of jokes.

        • kareembadr-av says:

I never saw Nanette, so I can’t speak to it. I’m merely judging Chappelle for his own work. But his audience was laughing reacting as though it were a typical comedy special. *shrug*

It’s worth noting that the past, oh, 18 months or so haven’t exactly been “business as usual” for live standup comedy, so I wouldn’t be as certain about that as under any circumstances. He undoubtedly wasn’t doing the material for the first time for the special, but I also doubt that all that many people saw it beforehand (at least compared to the number that would in non-pandemic times). Even with his ill-conceived outdoor shows that ended up being spreader events in several cases.

    • dr-darke-av says:

And…I would be very surprised if you don’t meet more of them right now….

    • bashmet1251-av says:

He also claims that some of his own trans friends had no problem with his comments, saying, “For the record, and I need you to know this, everyone I know from that community has been loving and supportive, so I don’t know what this nonsense is about.”Now imagine if a white comedian said “I have a black friend and they had no problem with what I said!”in defense of a special where they used racial slurs for black people…Also considering he didn’t even bother to show up to his trans “friend’s” funeral you can tell how close they actually were.As a reminder, please do not reply to transphobes in the comments, especially if they’re in the greys. It’s a waste of everyone’s time that’s just gonna bump their thread to the top of the comment section. If you wanna reply to them create your own thread and post a screenshot of their comments.

    • bhlam-22-av says:

This is the exact argument I’ve been making since the special dropped. It’s one thing that Chappelle tells a story about a trans friend of his. It’s another that they can’t defend their story and that Chappelle is using it to justify his own ignorance.

    • citricola-av says:

I don’t think it’s so bad that he didn’t go to her funeral – as a famous man who has public problems with the transgender community it would have been a distraction at best. This is not defending anything else, especially not the godawful special he did and how he exploited her memory for an extended “my best friend is in a minority!” justification.

    • mcmf-av says:

It sure seems that everyone is a transphobe for no other reason than disagreeing. I read some very mature well thought outcomments on here but never see an equal response or discussion. Maybe my definition of hating someone is different.

    • galvatronguy-av says:

We can reply to the greys again?! They fixed something with Kinja?!

    • mikepencenonethericher-av says:

Him going to that funeral would have been a side show and a distraction so probably a good thing he didn’t

Just so we are all clear, this is the person who called for the walkout from Netflix. I guess her racism and homophobia are okay though? This was never a real controversy. Everyone but the most ardent Twitter warriors have since moved on. Give it up already.

    • falcopawnch-av says:

Her repeated jokes at the expense of my community are repulsive. But the majority of these tweets are from ten years ago, and I’m not so cynical that I believe a person is incapable of evolving. And even if those awful beliefs do still live in her heart after all this time, I don’t think they invalidate the work she’s doing now. Broken clocks and all that.

      • cash4chaos-av says:

Oh, please. If this was from someone you didn’t already have a bias to think of positively, I seriously doubt you’d be saying that. This is horrendous behavior. You condoning it only makes you look bad as well.

        • ghostscandoit-av says:

She has since apologized for posting that hateful garbage. That’s not an excuse, but apologizing is more than Chapelle’s done.

    • whoopsiegaysie-av says:

      kill yourself

    • roadshell-av says:

The hypocrisy is noteworthy, but the reason this was never a controversy is because these are tweets made by a relative nobody, not the world’s most famous comedian on the world’s biggest streaming service.

    • mcmf-av says:

There are 2 dizen people who literally cant and theve decided they speak for an entire group. They themselves. Its like believing Al Sharpton speaks for all or even a majority of black people. Well my 2 boys are considered black, although theyre probably around 35% and i can assure you Al nor no one else speaks for them. Just like there is no white/native american person who speaks for me or my group.

Fuck off. Don’t try to deflect the trans community’s criticism as being “corporate interests.” Also, the only corporation involved here is Netflix and they’re on your side. You are the corporate interest in this story.
“For the record, and I need you to know this, everyone I know from that
community has been loving and supportive, so I don’t know what this
    nonsense is about.”

Yeah and everyone around Kanye has been telling him his ideas are great. You live in a bubble and you’re worth millions, nobody cares that your inner circle thinks your shit doesn’t stink. That’s not a sign that the rest of the world is wrong, it’s a sign that you don’t just depend on your friends to judge your material, which is something most professional comedians know really goddamn well so what even is this excuse.

  • captain-splendid-av says:

Upon further reflection, this actually makes we want to cut Chappelle some slack.Because what I just read is textbook “Old man doesn’t get what the fuss is being made over his behaviour about something he’s never bothered to properly understand in the first place because he never really had the need to.”And that shit’s pretty much terminal.  He’s not gonna learn.  Best we can do now is ignore him until he fades away.

  • imodok-av says:

“I want everyone in this audience to know that even though the media frames it that it’s me versus that community, that’s not what it is. Do not blame the LGBTQ community for any of this. It’s about corporate interests, and what I can say, and what I cannot say.”
I hate to break it to Dave, but the corporate interests are on his side. The white establishment is on his side. Joe Rogan, who has the flagship program on Spotify and more than 30 million viewers, is supporting him. Jon Stewart, a media icon who has the flagship program on Apple+, is supporting him. Ted Sarandos, the friggin’ co-CEO of Netflix, is supporting him. The power imbalance is entirely in Chappelle’s and its pathetic of him to whine otherwise.

    • apollomojave-av says:

Chapelle previously compared himself to a slave to gain leverage in a routine contract dispute and it worked! Legally he had no leg to stand on but the bad press was enough to get him the contract he wanted. Dude has no shame about manipulating the media and I’m not surprised that’s his go-to move here.

      • imodok-av says:

I don’t have a problem with Chappelle leveraging his influence in a contract dispute. Corporations leverage the economic advantages they have all the time. People tend to treat contracts like holy writ, but they can be the basis of a negotiation. I think it is completely fair to find his use of the “Slave” metaphor crass, but creators of IP, such as Prince, have often felt exploited in that way by the owners of their work. I also think it was economics — Chappelle’s ability to tank the value of his old series with this campaign, as well as losing out on any potential of doing business with one of America’s most successful comics — that propelled the decision to give him back the rights to his eponymous show.It is accurate to say that Chappelle was playing dirty, but I don’t put it on the same level as punching down and misrepresenting a disagreement with an entire marginalized class.

It’s the exact reverse of the sentiment Stewart voiced about cancel culture just last week. It’s the kind of reversal — seemingly hypocritical about the subject now it involves a friend — he would have mocked on the Daily Show.

          • imodok-av says:

Chappelle special should be judged on its content. Whether or not people liked it, they are entitled to their own subjective opinion. But the fact that some corporate interest MIGHT pay attention and react to negative opinions is imo not a good rationale for critiquing those opinions.

When this controversy came out about ‘The Closer,’ they began disinviting me from these film festivals,” Chappelle claimed. “And now, today, not a film company, not a movie studio, not a film festival, nobody will touch this film. Thank God for Ted Sarandos and Netflix, he’s the only one that didn’t cancel me yet.”Sort of throws a wrench into the whole “he’s not facing any consequences. Why is he whining?” narrative. Also…of course there were plenty of trans people who had no problem with it. Because most of the country, and world, doesn’t play identity politics every waking minute.

  • showdetective-av says:

Dave Chapelle and Ariel Pink are gonna go on a 75 city “I Been A Bad Boyyy!” tour, maybe get Trump to headline some dates.

  • nameofusr-av says:

I’m going to treat it as given that this person is acting in good faith, and will respond to their argument accoridngly. 1. Yes, those Tweets are bad. They’re also from several years ago. There is a huge difference between “cancelling” people for saying bigoted things NOW and saying bigoted things IN THE PAST. It’s entirely possible that Preston has grown as a person since then. 1.5. Also, IT WAS CLEARLY JUST A JOKE, SO YOU’RE NOT ALLOWED TO BE OFFENDED!!! (This is sarcasm, for the record, because I am goddamn sick and tired of the “humor” argument). 2. Even IF she’s still a bigot currently, that doesn’t actually devalue any criticism of Chappelle? (For example: If I have a bad opinion regarding book-burning and censorship, that doesn’t necessarily mean I’m going to have a bad opinion about literally everything else). This is just ad hominem, and it’s not a good argument. 3. Preston is a nobody. I literally didn’t even know her name until the screenshots. Chappelle is a famous multimillionaire with tons of famous friends. Preston’s speech doesn’t have the same amount of impact as Chappelle’s, so it can’t be judged the same way. (If that seems unfair, it is! However, keep in mind that in exchange for that smaller amount of public-impunity, Chappelle has millions of dollars).

“It seems like I’m the only one who can’t go to the office.”I have nothing to say about trans folks, but that is the most tone deaf thing I’ve heard a motherfucker say this side of 1/1/2020.I miss my office…

    • elrond-hubbard-elven-scientologist-av says:

Yeah, if this guy even has an “office,” its probably just one of the rooms in his mansion.

  • zwing-av says:

Man that little Hannah Gadsby dig is the biggest tell here, considering her second special is just legit a solid comedy routine, and her first special hinges in having a very funny half hour of a comedy routine. Talk about throwing stones without watching it! What a sensitive little prick Dave is. I think the best course of action is just to let him have his little specials, make his millions, and let it flame out after a couple days – as those internal metrics noted, apparently they’re not even that highly-rated. Dave’s become a troll and like all trolls, best not to feed him.

    • fyodoren-av says:

I’ll feed whomever I want, fuck you very much.God, he can’t even crack a joke about Hannah now? Some of you are simply too delicate for this world.

    • Harold_Ballz-av says:

It really was telling, wasn’t it? So fucking petty. But, can you do me a solid and explain the Hannah “feud” to me? I saw that she responded to Sarandos’s memo and made mention of Chappelle’s fans bombarding her with hate in the past, but I don’t really know how far back it goes.

      • sarcastro7-av says:

I don’t know the ins and outs, but we can pretty justifiably presume that Chappelle’s fans who love his “hey I’m just telling it like it is but also joking” thing about trans people do not like an unapologetic lesbian who dares disagree.

      • garland137-av says:

She posted this after Sarandos held her up as an example of the diversity of viewpoints on Netflix:
She criticised Chappelle indirectly while addressing someone else, but apparently that’s enough to pierce his thin skin.

        • Harold_Ballz-av says:

Ah, okay, I saw that when she posted it—and thought it was great. The fact that he’s now shitting on her while performing live made me think that there was more to the story. Nope, just a thin-skinned old man yelling at clouds, per the (recent) usual.

        • angotti81-av says:

Chappelle has a thin skin??? Is this a joke???

      • zwing-av says:

No clue, I know she responded about his special to Netflix after Sarandos name-dropped her. But no idea if/why there’s a personal feud there.

        • Harold_Ballz-av says:

Okay, that’s all I thought this “feud” consisted of, as well, and apparently, we’re correct.Yikes, Chappelle. Grow up.

  • alliterator85-av says:

He didn’t say that. He said this: He continues, “And if you want to meet with me, I am more than willing to, but I have some conditions: first of all, you cannot come if you have not watched my special from beginning to end. You must come to a place of my choosing and time of my choosing. And thirdly, you must admit that Hannah Gadsby is not funny.”Fuck off, Dave Chappelle.

    • sethsez-av says:

“I will only listen to you on my terms, at my place, at my convenience” really says everything that needs to be said about how much he actually gives a shit.

      • mcmf-av says:

    • blpppt-av says:

Yet another one of the people I held to a high standard turns out to be a hypocritical d-bag.I better start working on my people-reading skills.I understand Dave is probably under siege from all angles right now with this controversy, but he could at least have made an effort to not come off as a belligerent clown in this statement.

    • pez3000-av says:

Surely, whatever our differences, we can all agree one of those demands is the definition of truth. Right?

      • wellijustcouldnotsay-av says:

No. Dave = never funny; three specials; I didn’t even giggle. Hannah = I’ve never before in my life laughed till I cried. Thought people were making that shit up! Turns out stand up is just filled with unoriginal hacks except for her.

      • sarcastro7-av says:

Sure, no problem with the first one.

    • briliantmisstake-av says:

My eyes rolled so hard at that part of his comment I think I sprained something.

    • mcmf-av says:

Seems reasonable. But, no one will do it, because the people bitching are a very small few who arent open to actual dialogue and victimhood. Which is sad because a great deal of my trans brother and sister are actual victims of actual crimes or violance and hate and this kind of bullshit detracts from real victims.

    • gretaherwig-av says:

The third part is fair though

    • angotti81-av says:

But she isn’t.  She makes interesting faces, while addressing her huge victimhood, being a popular lgbt comedian with two netflix specials.  Funny?  no

  • anthonypirtle-av says:

The last thing the employees of Netflix need is a lecture from Chappelle explaining why his offensive comments were fine.

  • l-johnston-av says:

Nice to see these sites toning down what was clearly heavily one-sided coverage of this continuing story. I mean collectively what was put out here on AV, over on Jezebel, and on Gizmodo went from proper reporting to essentially a character assassination of Dave Chappelle/Netflix without even waiting for responses or outright dismissing any statement/action by two said parties as out of touch.

  • dogboysplastichair-av says:

“It seems like I’m the only one who can’t go to the office.”-Poor victim.“Do not blame the LGBTQ community for any of this.”-That’s mighty magnanimous of you, but I wasn’t, dipshit. “To the transgender community, I am more than willing to give you an audience, but you will not summon me. I am not bending to anybody’s demands.”-*fart*“For the record, and I need you to know this, everyone I know from that community has been loving and supportive, so I don’t know what this nonsense is about.”-Oh, he’s got trans friends? Well I stand corrected

    • suckadick59595-av says:

  • inoperableheart-av says:

A lot of people have never really dealt with the fact the Dave Chappelle’s thing is being a black guy who is willing to make all the dumb racist jokes white guys make. Most people have too much dignity for something like that but not Dave.

  • saddadstheband-av says:

“It’s about corporate interests, and what I can say, and what I cannot say.”The corporate interests that sent out a memo backing you and paid you $20million and fired someone for leaking that, which caused a walkout that you are mocking? • suckadick59595-av says:

Isn’t that what white people like to say, though, to the black community? “We need to have a conversation. We are going to listen to you” about cops killing black folks, systemic racism, etc. And, rightfully, I read many articles on the Root and other black-centered outlets about how the “conversation” is just a way for white people to feel like they’re doing things without actually making any change. That its white folks still trying to set the terms of the “discussion” and trying to set the table rather than actually listening or being willing to interrogate their own white bias and/or racism; that the “conversation” is one black people have been trying to get white folks to listen to for years and decades. White people telling black people “we will listen, but you need to protest/communicate *this* way.”So… We have a rich (black) man telling a minority that he is open to a conversation but only on his terms.I…..

  • thegobhoblin-av says:

Regardless of what you feel about Dave, Hannah, or Netflix, the important thing to remember is that we can’t watch that one Community episode about Dungeons & Dragons.

  • mikepencenonethericher-av says:

He’s literally gonna die on that hill.

  • pgoodso564-av says:

What I don’t like is the hypocrisy. He used his leverage with his fans to get what he felt like was justice in a contract dispute, literally using the words “I know where my power lies” (referring to his audiences) in that one special where he asked them for help, and the moment any of his audiences come back and say “Hey, we don’t like this”, the MOMENT that happens, all of a sudden, the humility and respect evaporates, and even further, he deserves, nay, DICTATES the terms of an “invitation” he should receive to discuss things with, what, some vague Congress of Trans People that should be privileged to talk to him? Guess his power DOESN’T lie with the people he offended, because he certainly does not grant it to them.

He knows he has power, wishes to use it, and not lose it. Now, a cynic may note that that describes the majority of humanity in his situation. But that cannot be an excuse when he pretends humility and acts like he is above that shit. You can’t in one moment embrace your more ignorant impulses as long as it gets a fucking laugh and the next ask others to restrain their speech to the kind, time and place he prefers, ESPECIALLY when he has the privilege to talk to literally millions of homes at a time.

To be clear: the people that aren’t on his side on this one subject aren’t people that hated Dave Chappelle. They are people that thought he was better than this. That’s why they’re fucking hurt, Dave. The people ON his side, on the other hand, are the ones who made him run away from comedy in the first place. The yesmen only around for money, and the oppressors only there for support for their own beliefs.

Maybe he really does know where his power lies.

  • colonel9000-av says:

I have long maintained that even if you’re not a Fox News idiot, if you live in some rural town where everyone else is watching that trash, you hear the Fox talking points that way of thinking starts to creep into your brain. I feel like that’s what happened to Dave, because he’s sounding increasingly like a fussy old MAGA dude who insists everyone else is wrong to be offended. “The problem isn’t my transphobia, it’s that y’all are too sensitive, nyuck nyuck!”He think he has the rhetorical power and cool cache’ to talk his way out of this, but from my perspective he’s just digging himself deeper. Either way, it’s a bummer to watch one of your heroes morph into a MAGA dude.
