[Update 5/6]: Following its premiere at CinemaCon last week, the trailer for David Cronenberg’s Crimes Of The Future has finally been shared online:

Aside from David Lynch’s nonexistent film, David Cronenberg’s Crimes Of The Future might be the film that attendees of the 2022 Cannes Film Festival are most excited to see. On Tuesday, distributor Neon films screened the first full trailer for Cronenberg’s latest, which was preceded by a brief introduction from producer Robert Lantos and Cronenberg himself.

While the trailer itself was so authentically Cronenbergian that it almost felt like parody—full of measured, bone-dry line deliveries, odd, talisman-like objects, and an uneasy but endlessly intriguing nexus between sex, horror and technology—he and his producer teed it up in a way that should excite fans who haven’t seen this particular Cronenberg in a long time.

Lantos opened by discussing how he and Cronenberg first met in 1975 while the filmmaker was promoting Shivers, and they went on to work together on Naked Lunch and Crash. “Crimes of the Future is our fourth collaboration,” Lantos said. “Each one has been a memorable roller coaster ride, and I can guarantee you that this one will be no exception.”

“This is my first time in Vegas,” said Cronenberg as he stepped to the podium. “I have to thank the fabulous people at Neon for introducing me to the Caesars Palace. And it seems an appropriate place to launch our attack on the world.” He said that he first wrote the script for Crimes Of The Future more than 20 years ago. “Mr. Lantos on me and said, have you ever read that old script that we didn’t actually get to make? And I said, No, why would I? I’m sure it’s irrelevant now. And he said, “no, it’s more relevant than ever.”

“Well, we’ll see about that,” said Cronenberg modestly, before discussing its unique shooting locations in Greece. “I think I was very lucky to end up shooting the film in Athens. I had written it for Toronto 20 years ago, and it was very exciting to have a production in an ancient city which was old, but Toronto is not 3000 years old. So the texture the of the of the city and the feeling of the Mediterranean and so on, we very much absorbed into the film.”

Without further ado, Cronenberg set up the trailer, making an ominous promise: “You are about to see the trailer for Crimes of the Future,” he said. “It is very much what the film is.”

“Lez Seydoux”Something you want to tell us, Todd?

It’s a coded message. It translates to: What is an editor?

“Editor [ed-i-ter]; noun:“A person the AV Club forgot to hire more of when they fired almost their entire staff because they didn’t want to move to Los Angeles from Chicago.”

0:15 that’s the house in the movie Morgan which means along with the giant cockroach cocoon thingie that the movie Crimes of the Future is just a shitty low budget ripoff of the Forbin Project with women in peril she’s Kate Mara the profile of her face is Marion Cotillard “fuck if I have to get up and spend another day on set on this piece of garbage I’m going to fucking kill myself”

    • raycearcher-av says:

Me, watching literally every Cronenberg movie:“Ha, this is so cheap and dumb, why does everyone say how hardcore this dude is?”“Oh Jesus oh shit no I don’t like this oh hell no!”“Ha, that’s actually pretty funny.”“Oh, now I hate this again okay no”“Yay that was so fun, what a great director.”

In his defense, one of her most notable roles is infamous for a certain sex scene between two women.

    The greatest living filmmaker.

Gotta give that title to Lynch just based on the incredible experiences over a lifetime going to the theater for his premieres, Cronenberg is certainly up in the top five tho. He would’ve beat DL in my book if he managed to land the plane on Naked Lunch, that was just a somewhat charming mess instead. The potential was there for magic!

I once raved about Crash to a friend, who subsequently figured it might make a good date movie. It wasn’t.

      • jackstark211-av says:

Hahahahahaha.  I bet that was an interesting date.

      • well-lighted-av says:

Jealous, the only Lynch I’ve seen in theaters was Inland Empire, but goddamn what an experience. I also saw Lost Highway during a “Lynch Fest” at a local theater, but it was clearly just the DVD being shown, so not really the same.

“I don’t understand. How is a movie about people getting aroused by car crashes supposed to be a trite statement against racism? This won Best Picture?”

full of measured, bone-dry line deliveries, odd, talisman-like objects, and an uneasy but endlessly intriguing nexus between sex, horror and technology I could not be more “IN” for this movie if I was one of the vestigial body parts growing on David Cronenberg’s body LOL

    • drdny-av says:

They are growing on Cronenberg’s body — starting with his glasses, which even in the 32nd Century are now permanently fixed to his face….

  • diabolik7-av says:

Those who have missed the body-horror for which Cronenberg is synonymous should check out his little lad Brandon’s work. His debut, Antiviral, was promising but his second, Possessor, is stunning, in a number of ways, and had you just been shown a few minutes without any indication of who was the director you would say Cronenberg. If Crimes Of The Future is the final film which Cronenberg (D) will direct, as he has heavily hinted, then there is Cronenberg (B) to step into his shoes.

    • gruesome-twosome-av says:

I haven’t seen Antiviral, but yeah, Possessor was fucking awesome and li’l Brandon definitely seems to be a chip off the ol’ block. It would be perfectly fitting if Crimes of the Future is indeed Cronenberg Sr.’s final film, it’s an apt career-coming-full circle moment with his return to his trademark body horror that put him on the map.

    • banezy451-av says:

huh, i’ve heard mixed things about possessor, but have heard the visuals are pretty awesome regardless, so maybe i still need to catch it…

  • tjsproblemsolvers-av says:

Viggo’s got an Armin Shimerman thing going on these days…

  • teageegeepea-av says:

Given the quotes about how long ago he wrote the script, I find it odd there’s no mention of Cronenberg’s 1970 “Crimes of the Future”.

    • drdny-av says:

I thought it was here that I read the movie has nothing do to with his original Crimes of the Future other than sharing a title.

  • well-lighted-av says:

Apparently I was one of the first non-industry people to see this trailer. It appears to have premiered at CinemaCon on the 26th between 9:15-11:30 AM, during Neon’s presentation, and I saw it ahead of a 12PM showing of The Northman on the 27th. I’m in Central time so that’s less than 24 hours. Neat!

  • mavar-av says:

So this film is a commentary on how we see ourselves in terms of what society sees as pretty or handsome and how we try to make ourselves look better through cosmetic surgery?

  • bcfred2-av says:

Body horror is just the one sub-genre I can’t take in undiluted doses like this.  Gaah.

  • dmfc-av says:

this finally dropped! nice! I must have been hallucinating when I saw it at the Alamo drafthouse attached to the northman last week

  • nogelego-av says:

    Unzipping now.

  • lattethunder-av says:

Hope there’s a monkey with four asses.

  • banezy451-av says:

ok be real with me, how many other people read “GRIMES of the future” at the end of that trailer?

  • tmage-av says:

As much I loved Eastern Promises and History of Violence, it’s nice to see Cronenberg return to the weird existential body horror that he does best.

  • nilus-av says:

Really looking forward to this. Cronenberg going back to body horror is awesome.

  • stryker1121-av says:

I’m so excited, the importance of Cronenberg’s work to me is so profound, that I don’t have anything clever to say.  I mean I never do anyway, but I particularly don’t right now.

“Lantos opened by discussing how he and Cronenberg first met in 1975 while the filmmaker was promoting Shivers, and they went on to work together on Naked Lunch and Crash.”It amazes me that they first worked together the year I was born. I’m not his biggest fan, but a new Cronenberg film is always something to pay attention to. I didn’t know that A History of Violence was a graphic novel until after I had watched the film. I found it in a used bookstore and…I’m kind of surprised Cronenberg didn’t go all Cronenberg with how it really ended in the novel. I also think I understand -why- he didn’t, because how he directed the film accomplished the story he was telling. And seriously, Viggio Mortensen might be my next favorite actor after Ron Perlman. That both of those guys do just about any part, but their big roles are always with two of my favorite directors tells me everything about their acting choices.

  • hulk6785-av says:

So, it’s Crash mixed with Videodrome with a splash of eXistenZ and a dash of Naked Lunch.

  • greatgodglycon-av says:

Glad to see some old school commenters come out of the woodwork to share their joy at a new Cronenberg picture! Quick! Back to wherever it is we go!

  • chronophasia-av says:

Some of the weird stuff show in the trailer reminds me of eXistenZ.

  • sjfwhite-av says:

Oh Jeebus… Ironic that the first thing that went through my mind was “this will be like watching a car crash if I got off on watching car crashes”.

  • rottencore-av says:

well this looks seriously fucking disgusting
