Last month, David Lynch teased that “Something is coming along for you to see and hear! And it will be coming along on June 5,” in a video posted to social media. Fans of course hoped for more Twin Peaks or a new movie, but on the promised day, the truth was revealed. The new project is an album debuting on August 2 called Cellophane Memories, a collaboration with artist Chrystabell, who played Agent Tammy Preston on Twin Peaks: The Return. On Wednesday, they released the first single from the album, “Sublime Eternal Love,” with a Lynch-directed music video that fits perfectly with the filmmaker’s dreamy, surreal oeuvre.

A press release for the album also describes the origins of their latest collaboration in perfectly Lynchian terms. Cellophane Memories “comes from a vision that David experienced during a nighttime walk through a forest of tall trees, over the tops of which he saw a bright light. As he recalls it, the light became the lilt of Chrystabell’s voice and revealed a secret to him. It is from these mysterious convergences of light and sound, day and night, starry sky and black forest that Chrystabell and David’s collaboration has continued to blossom.”

In addition to being one of the most distinctive voices in cinema, Lynch is a musician with a few albums under his belt. He contributed his own work to the Inland Empire soundtrack, including his first collaboration with Chrystabell. The duo reteamed for her 2011 album This Train and the 2016 EP Somewhere In The Nowhere. The new album “returns us to a central question: what is a mystery? Alas, the riddle remains unanswered,” reads the press release. “But all mystery contains slivers of those conceits and feelings described above: the departing and the coming-back, the landscape, atmosphere and breath, the topsy-turvy mechanisms of time, memories of the bygone, a distant light radiating from darkness, music within silence, love.”
