Don Cheadle’s Disney+ series Armor Wars is still months away from actually heading to the streamer (one prediction places the release date some time in 2023) but it’s starting to take shape. Yassir Lester—who currently stars with Cheadle in the Showtime series Black Monday—has just been added as the show’s head writer.

Cheadle will be reprising his role as James “Rhodey” Rhodes—a.k.a War Machine, and he’ll have the spotlight in a way he’s never had in previous Marvel films. Though no plot details or an official log line have been released, Cheadle’s confirmed that Tony’s death will definitely play a huge role in the new series. And back in December, Kevin Feige told us that the general overview is: Armor Wars will explore what happens when Tony Stark’s tech falls into the wrong hands.

During an appearance on BroBible’s Post-Credits podcast, Cheadle explained the technology will also be a pretty huge part of Rhodey’s character development. “Where we’ve been sort of progressing Rhodey—even in the last film where he’s now up again and he’s now walking again and he’s now mobile again,” he said. “As the technology continues to develop and we keep making innovations in the suit … I imagine there’s gonna be another elevation and another way that we’re going to keep digging into that part of Rhodey.”

Armor Wars isn’t the only upcoming Disney+ show set to unpack the relationship between the aftermath of Tony’s death, technology, and the ways they all affect the post-Avengers: Endgame canon. Ironheart is set to receive her own series on the streamer as well—but not before making her debut in Black Panther 2. And for those of us who need to brush up on our Marvel comic lore, The A.V. Club writer Sam Barsanti has explained that Ironheart is “a teenage genius who built her own Iron Man-like armor and briefly served as the replacement Iron Man when Tony Stark died (he got better).” She also “had an AI replica of Tony Stark’s consciousness help her out for a while before the real guy came back.”

    Damn!

The Armor Wars was a big storyline around 1987-1988 in Marvel in which Iron Man (not dead due to reversing Thano’s snap) goes and claims all his tech which has found it’s way into various super villains. This also brings him into conflict with Cap (who was also not back in time living his life with Peggy, but wearing the Black costume John Carter got as US Agent while John Carter was running around as a violent, conservative Cap- it’s complicated) which alienates their friendship, years before ‘Civil War’. It’s cool that Rhodey is going to be the star of this and it makes logical sense.

Armor Wars (the first one) happened before Infinity War – before Thanos had been brought back to life (Adam Warlock ended him back in 77 in Avengers Annual 7).

So like 20 some movies and a few tv shows in we’re gonna start complaining about creative liberties? Besides, I read armor wars when it came out, total garbage, we’re lucky they can’t actually make that show.

A black paraplegic hero fights crime with an advanced tech suit and a whiz kid assistant — this is the stealth reboot of M.A.N.T.I.S. that I’ve always wanted.

Someone needs to get the rights to M.A.N.T.I.S, Nightman and Viper and make a bad 90s syndicated super hero cinematic universe

Throw in Manimal for good measure and we really got something!

I would like to see a League of Extraordinary Gentleman for ‘80s and ‘90s tv superheroes. I’d also like a shared Saxophone Universe that includes Nightman, Lisa Simpson, Bill Clinton, Clarence Clemons from the E Street Band and the saxophone guy from Lost Boys. No one ever accused me of being practical.

Allow the 80s and throw Automan in the mix. 🙂

    Yassir Lester is the best.

I only watched “Black Monday” intermittently (though my gf is a huge fan) and Yassir is great on it (as well as being one of the writers, obviously.)  Fun choice!

He was great in the little seen Fox comedy Making History with Adam Pally.

As long as 85% of the runtime can be devoted to discussing the fallout from “the snap”, because I don’t think the MCU has really talked much about that in its post-Endgame content.

I thought this said “Armoire Wars” and was hoping we’re getting a move about battling wardrobes.

Armor Wars will explore what happens when Tony Stark’s tech falls into the wrong hands. In other words, the first MCU Spidey film. And kinda the second. And the ant-Man films (just with Pym tech instead of Stark tech). Not that I mind…I’ll definitely watch it.
