Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special to get 3-D simulcast in movie theaters

Aux Features TV

Doctor Who fans craving the excitement of a midnight premiere during the more civilized afternoon hours have reason to rejoice. Movie theaters in 11 U.S. cities will offer special screenings of the upcoming Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special, “The Day Of The Doctor.” At the same time the 75-minute special makes its TV debut across the world, BBC America will simultaneously screen the 3-D episode in movie theatres in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, San Francisco, Washington DC, Houston, Atlanta, Seattle, and Minneapolis. The simulcast is based around the 7 p.m. UK airtime, which means fans can attend these screenings at 2 p.m. on the East Coast and 11 a.m. on the West Coast.

Tickets will go on sale through Cinemark and Fandango starting October 25 at 9 a.m. EST and are likely to sell out quickly. A full list of participating theaters is below. Fans who attend the screenings will also be treated to a 10-minute behind-the-scenes featurette where executive producer Steven Moffat and the cast discuss the making of the episode.

BBC America also announced a special encore screening on November 25 in more than 300 movie theaters. A complete list of all screenings can be found on NCM Fathom Events.

The 50th Anniversary special will feature current stars Matt Smith and Jenna Coleman, returning stars David Tennant and Billie Piper, and John Hurt, who is new to the Doctor Who universe, but is (according to rumor) set to play a secret regeneration of the Doctor. BBC has yet to release much information about the plot of the episode, but did recently release a trailer celebrating Doctors and companions, past and present. Geronimo indeed.
