Here’s what’s happening in the world of television for Sunday, December 5. All times are Eastern.

Top Pick

Doctor Who: Flux (BBC America, 8:00 p.m.): The stunning conclusion of the Flux arc is called “The Vanquishers.” Caroline Siede is recapping. Look for Jodie Whittaker’s (brief) return in multiple specials.

Regular coverage

Succession (HBO, 9:00 p.m.)
Dexter: New Blood (Showtime, 9:00 p.m.)
Insecure (HBO, 10:00 p.m)
Yellowjackets (Showtime, 10 p.m.)
Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO, 10:30 p.m.)

Wild Card

Beforeigners (HBO Max, 3:01 a.m.): The first season of this Norweigian show took place in Oslo, where sudden flashes of light were accompanied by people from time periods like the Stone Age, the Viking Age, and the 19th century, appear in the present. It looks like second season has this phenomenon happening around the world.

Season’s streamings

The National Christmas Tree Lighting (CBS, 8:30 p.m): This one’s pretty self-explanatory.

My Favorite Christmas Melody (Lifetime, 8 p.m.): A former rising pop star faces a life of writing boring commercial jingles. However, you should know that the former pop star is played by the actual former pop star, Mýa. You know? “The Case Of the Ex”?? The movie doesn’t have a trailer online but that song’s beat lives eternal. Between Mýa’s lead role here and Christina Milian starring in Netflix rom-coms, can JoJo get, like, an Amazon Prime series?

The Christmas Thief (ION, 8 p.m.): A fledgling private eye comes home for the holidays, where she tries to unlock the mystery of a string of burglaries committed by someone dressed as Santa. Vivica A. Fox co-stars as the head of the local detective agency.

Vivica A. Fox’s Christmas Movie Slate (Peacock): When looking for a trailer for the above movie, it turns out Vivica A. Fox has been in a LOT of Christmas movies, so if you’re ever in a crunch to watch one but can’t remember any names, just google “Vivica” in Peacock and you’ll find A Wedding For Christmas, Christmas Matchmakers, A Husband For Christmas, A Christmas Cruise, and Christmas Together, the trailer of which is below:

End of the universe? Been there, done that decades ago in Lexx for starters.Ditto with that Beforeigners trailer, it’s actually exactly the same as the Season 1 trailer.

I watched the first season of Beforeigners some time in 2019 and remember finding it pretty enjoyable. That season 2 trailer in this article is all scenes from the first season so I’m a little confused on what that’s about.

I like this very weird show. But 2.1 isn’t there. All I see on Max are the first season episodes. What am I missing?

TUAYPCWI caught up on Batwoman. Season three is less muddled than season two yet still shoddily written. Doing new spins on Batman’s less grounded foes is refreshing, but the writers have been underming Ryan Wilder.https://mattthecatania.wordpress.com/2021/11/30/will-batwoman-season-three-overcome-its-legacy/
New Chrstmas specials were more rewarding. Now that he starred in his own prime-time animated special, Beebo Saves Christmas, when will plush Beebo dolls & other swag finally be available? The moral about not being obsessed with your own traditions was similar to Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas. Thank you to The Roku Channel for giving ZEP-heads & ZEPrechauns such a wondrous sendoff for Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist!

I thought I read that there were at least a couple more Zoey movies still to come.

Tell US About Your Pop Culture Weekend I watched the latest episode of Wheel of Time again, since the podcast nerds informed me I’d missed some details. This was my least favorite episode of the season, even knowing why they’d slow the narrative down to give us these emotional beats. I didn’t hate it, but it reinforces how different the characters must be from what I know in the books.I also read maybe 150 pages in Crown of Swords, since I was feeling WoT-y.There was a sportsball game or two this weekend, and a number of upsets that could have impacted things. But only one result really mattered, and Michigan is the Big Ten champion. I’m very glad to have a month before I’ll be stressing about scores on ESPN again. My wife burned through 4 seasons of the Vampire Diaries this fall, which pushed spin-off show Legacies back onto Netflix’s recommendations. We finished season 1, which is goofy as heck.  Even knowing I’ve seen some of it before, I don’t actually know where this is going, although Netflix tells me season 3 exists and is *new.

Pop Culture Weekend: Not much, since I mostly slept and had college football on in the background. Ended up skipping most of Toonami since it was a marathon of Blade Runner: Black Lotus. I’m watching the new episodes, but despite the pedigree (written by the guy who did Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and the guy who did the Appleseed movies and produced by the guy who did Cowboy Bebop) I am not really feeling the show at all. Then again, I never really got into the original movie either.
And the marathon is the latest bit of stalling the block has done recently. Next week they’re tripling up Yashahime in order to finish off Season 1 (now THAT is a disappointing show), then the week after they’re playing The Animatrix and the various anime Rick & Morty shorts. Then the traditional Christmas and New Year’s marathons. Hopefully in January the block actually gets some new shows, because after next week, the only new shows on the block will be Black Lotus and Naruto Shippuden. In daytime CN news, there are some good, classic stuff coming up. Tonight has the first two live-action TMNT movies, later this week has the PPG Christmas special (the first time the original PPG has aired on regular CN in almost a decade) and The Iron Giant, and then on Christmas Eve we get the various Christmas episodes from not just newer shows, but stuff like Dexter’s Laboratory, Ed, Edd, & Eddy, and Codename: Kids Next Door.
Considering the Harry Potter game show is the only CN premiere to even sniff a million viewers since Steven Universe: Future ended, that all of their cartoon premieres get less viewers than a 3:30am rerun of Dragon Ball Super, and that the channel is now competing with Disney XD and Nicktoons instead of Disney Channel and Nickelodeon, it’s nice to see Cartoon Network going back to the classics instead of relying entirely on Teen Titans Go and Gumball.
