Eddie Redmayne realizes he’s a woman in the trailer for The Danish Girl

Film Features Film

An adaptation of David Ebershoff’s novel The Danish Girl has finally made it to the big screen, and if this trailer doesn’t scream “Inevitable Eddie Redmayne Oscar nomination,” we’re not sure what does. The film tells that story of Lili Elbe (Redmayne), who lived as a woman for years before undergoing one of the very first gender reassignment surgeries. It looks like the narrative will focus on Elbe’s difficult relationship with her wife, artist Gerda Gottlieb (Alicia Vikander), who first married Lili back when she was still known as Einar Wegener. It’s all very intimate and ostentatious-looking, because director Tom Hooper (Les Misérables, The King’s Speech) never met a frame he wouldn’t rather turn into a close-up, a fish-eye shot, or a Dutch angle with tons of negative space, cinematic logic be damned. As we previously reported, many efforts have been made to get this film going in the past, to no avail. Here’s hoping this version overcomes its Hooper-vision and does the story justice—the film comes out November 27.
