Eminem buries hatchet with old rival, The Punisher, by slamming Netflix for canceling his show

Aux Features TV

Eminem has been around long enough to have beefs with everyone from Ja Rule and Machine Gun Kelly to Everlast, Moby, and Christina Aguilera. Now that he’s older and concerned more with watching TV in his jammies than spitting bars at his colleagues, he’s decided to start something with Netflix, the company that went too far by cancelling its Marvel show, The Punisher.

It wasn’t clear at first why The Punisher’s cancellation upset Eminem so much—he’s not also pissed about Daredevil and Jessica Jones?—but Twitter quickly unearthed a decade-old comic showing that Venom isn’t the only comic book character Shady fucks with.

A bizarre relic from 2009, Eminem/Punisher #1 (there was only one) shows that the relationship between rapper and gun-loving vigilante goes way back. Little did we know that once upon a time Eminem was jumped by the Punisher after a concert, later knocked him out as part of a misunderstanding fueled by a supervillain’s schemes, and then warily teamed up with the comic book character to kill that villain with a chainsaw. (Please read the entire summary for yourself.)

While all of us were under the mistaken impression that Eminem was just a human being, it turns out he’s actually an honest-to-god Marvel character with Wiki pages detailing powers like “above average human strength,” “above average human intelligence,” and special abilities that include resourcefulness, “rapping skills” and “shooting skills.”

Is it any surprise, then, that Eminem would come for Netflix when they’ve done his old rival dirty by cancelling his show? No, now that we know Mathers’ comic book origins, his angry tweet makes perfect sense. God help Netflix if Eminem escalates this beef even further by teaming up once again with the Punisher, bringing their super-duo powers to bear on the streaming video giant.

I’m going to have to side with M&M’s on this one: The Punisher was a damn fine show. I’m hoping Hulu will pick it up

It was too expensive to keep paying the licensing fees to a company that was starting its own streaming service while also being a majority stakeholder of a current rival to Netflix. Blame Disney.

    • rktman16-av says:

If it gets picked back up it will be on the Disney streaming site

I just wonder why Disney would go to the trouble of launching their own service when they already own Hulu thanks to the Fox acquisition. Seems like a lot of extra work for something that could cannibalize an existing revenue stream. Granted, they don’t own 100% of it, but they also get access to content they don’t have to make.

Somebody else replied and enlightened me that the Disney streaming service will be family oriented.  So I am guessing they will put the harder material on Hulu to keep it separate.

lol a PG 13 Punisher would suck

The disney site is going to be kid friendly.  They might not bring it back because of that and if they put marvel on 2 different streaming services that would probably get them a bunch of bad publicity (

Not true. Disney will own 60% of shares in Hulu after the Fox deal. It’s the perfect place to put more adult oriented Marvel fare to stream. Like the upcoming adult geared Marvel animated shows Hulu and Marvel just signed a deal for.

I don’t understand this. Disney owns a bunch of adult comic book characters, but wants to have a kid-friendly streaming service that competes with Netflix. So now there’s no place for shows like The Punisher? Maybe this particular show was too expensive or whatever, but it seems like there’s a market somewhere for it.

Yeah Disney and all of the Marvel Netflix series were never going to be a good fit.  Shame though, all of them aside from the first series of Iron Fist were pretty solid and the casting was great – the ratings weren’t bad either. Disney doesn’t exactly do violent and gritty though…

        • rktman16-av says:

that blows, I guess it won’t be housing the Deadpools then either

    Ew. Screw whoever greenlit that.

This is definitely stranger than what I thought this story would be about – Eminem having an old beef with Jon Bernthal, which itself would have been pretty strange.

Not sure why people keep getting this wrong. Disney is not allowing Netflix to continue with any Marvel OC after next year. This is simply Netflix telling Disney to stuff it, and is not going to pay any more royalties if it can no longer have the OC. Plain and simple. THIS IS DISNEYS FAULT! They wanted to stream only Marvel OC on their new Marvel network (coming soon.) Thank you.

Slim ShadyCrying like a little baby

  • tbrd69-av says:

Someone tell Em it’s ok. Netflix has or is cancelling all it’s Marvel shows because marval is owned by Disney. Disney has there own streaming platform coming out and supposedly all the Marvel shows are just moving to a new home.

  • Enginerrrrrrrrr-av says:

Let’s be real, Jessica Jones needed to be cancelled.  After season one the story line couldn’t prop up all the terrible acting.
