Eminem drops a surprise album, raps about Venom

Less than a year after the release of his critically underwhelming 2017 effort Revival, Eminem mildly shocked the musical world by dropping an unexpected album, Kamikaze, on the internet tonight. The album—available to stream right now on Spotify—is 13 tracks of Marshall Mather’s typical bluster, culminating in an ode to everybody’s favorite slimy, big-tongued tooth monster, Venom.

We actually knew there was some sort of Eminem-Venom crossover brewing since earlier today, when the rapper’s Instagram posted a brief tease using the upcoming Sony movie’s logo. (We weren’t necessarily expecting a whole new album, though.) The track in question, meanwhile, isn’t all that interested in talking about symbiotes—although there is a bit of that: “Eddie Brock is you, and I’m the suit,” Em brags at one point—being more of an anger-fueled tone piece about how they “ain’t gonna know what hit ’em.”

Kamikaze was executive produced by Eminem’s old mentor Dr. Dre, and features performances from Justin Vernon, Royce Da 5’9”, Joyner Lucas, and Jessie Reyez. (Kendrick Lamar is also credited, although that’s apparently just because one of the tracks uses part of “HUMBLE”.)
