Evangeline Lilly, former superhero snob, turned down X-Men and Wonder Woman before the MCU

Professed anti-vaxxer Evangeline Lilly says she was "okay with burning bridges" when she rebuffed previous superhero roles

Evangeline Lilly is now deeply entrenched in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but there was a time where you literally couldn’t pay her to be in a superhero movie. Before conceding to be the MCU’s Wasp, she shrugged off Joss Whedon’s Wonder Woman and an opportunity to join Hugh Jackman in the X-Men franchise, she confesses on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

Lilly, who had previously revealed that she took a meeting for Wonder Woman, now admits she “was too young to be that polite” to even fake an interest in the film. “I think my impression, coming away from it, was I had no desire and [Whedon] could tell,” she says. “It didn’t appeal and there was nothing about the meeting that like, jazzed me or made me think like, ‘Oh, I’ve gotta do this.’ … Nothing clicked. Nothing felt good. I think that I at that time, and still I think to this day, I am way too authentic for my own good. I mean, it’s not good. If I am not impressed, you’ll know. And maybe you shouldn’t know sometimes.”

Whedon might have taken a bit of “offense” to her lack of interest, but she “was okay with that.”

“I was okay with burning bridges. I was okay with not having everyone in Hollywood wanna work with me,” says the actor, whose credits include showing up for an anti-vaccine protest in Washington, D.C.

Wonder Woman isn’t the only hero Lilly passed up on, though. “When we were were working on Real Steel, Hugh Jackman was like, ‘Hey, so, the X-Men guys are asking me if I would approach you because they know that you won’t talk to anybody, and won’t do anything and you’re not reading scripts and no one can reach you,’” she reveals. “‘So, they knew I was working with you and were interested to know if it would ever interest you to maybe do an X-Men thing.”

“And I was like, ‘No. It doesn’t interest me. I’m not interested,’” Lilly says. “I was like, ‘I feel like such a dick because I’m talking to an X-Men! …The X-Men! And I’m telling him, ‘No that doesn’t appeal.’ Like, what?! I felt so rude!”

The Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania star asserts that she “always had to do what felt right for me,” admitting that not only did she not want to act in a superhero film, she didn’t even want to watch one. “I often was very critical of them. Like, I was known to mock them and treat them as lower forms of entertainment until Marvel came around. And when they approached, I had the same reaction. You know, I’m equal, I’m fair in my negativity!”

However, her manager convinced her to check out some of the MCU entries, “And when I did, I was like, ‘Oh, they’re doing something very different and very cool,’” she says.

Edgar Wright’s departure from the first film initially vindicated her disapproval of Marvel (“I was like, ‘See? This is why you say no to the big franchises.’”) But the next version of the script convinced her to stick with it, and she ultimately came around to the MCU’s big-scale style of storytelling. And the rest, as they say, is history.

“Professed anti-vaxxer Evangeline Lilly”LOL! AV Club is trying so hard. Do they refer to Cardi B as “former prostitute Cardi B”?

    • lilnapoleon24-av says:

Bizarre take, because there’s nothing wrong with being a prostitute

      • chestrockwell24-av says:

Fair enough, do they say “Professed drugger and robber of men Cardi B”? Or are they just hypocrites?“Professed kisser of actors without their permission Mindy Kaling” ? That ever happen?Oh and there is nothing wrong with being against vaccine mandates, if you really wanna go there 🙂

        • mshep-av says:

If Cardi were still drugging and robbing men, yes, that would be worth a mention.

          • chestrockwell24-av says:

She admitted it, so I’m glad you think it’s worth a mention. But it wont be mentioned.

          • mshep-av says:

She admitted to doing it in the past, explained that she was doing what she had to do to survive in poverty. She is not, to my knowledge, currently, actively drugging and robbing men. Also, that action was not part of a massive disinformation movement that needlessly prolonged and exacerbated a global pandemic that is still ongoing, so maybe not quite as newsworthy as you seem to think.

          • chestrockwell24-av says:

Lilly isn’t still currently actively attending vaccine mandate protests either, is she?
And since Louis CK isnt actively still jerking off in front of women I’m sure this place will never ever mention it again.
I don’t think Cardi b drugging and robbing folk is newsworthy, but then again neither is the fact Lilly attended a protest over a year ago.

          • gargsy-av says:

“Lilly isn’t still currently actively attending vaccine mandate protests either, is she?”Correct. Which part of “Professed anti-vaxxer” implies that she is currently actively attending vaccine protests.

          • mshep-av says:

Man, maybe this just isn’t the right website for you.

          • chestrockwell24-av says:

It almost sounds like you think they will indeed continue to bring up what Louis CK did despite him not engaging in that behavior anymore.  Am I wrong in thinking you believe that?  Perhaps you earnestly believe they will drop it unless he does it again?

          • mshep-av says:

What I’m saying is that the notoriously left-leaning Onion’s sister site AV Club has always had a liberal political bent, and appears to continue to do so. This means that, yes, you should expect things like being vocally anti-vaccine and anti-quarantine during a deadly global pandemic; being a serial sex pest; being a proud, vocal bigot; and other liberal buggaboos to be mentioned, where conservative concerns like “having committed crimes while poor” may not. By all means, though, keep complaining about it. It make you seem cool.

          • chestrockwell24-av says:

Well hey at least you stopped trying to justify the blatant hypocrisy. Not sure why you brought up how she is no longer drugging and robbing men, since that clearly isn’t the criteria this place uses when they decide to sling shit at someone. This way you won’t have to make excuses for why they won’t call out Mindy Kaling for kissing a male co-star without permission, for why liberals suddenly don’t care about me too type situations. If complaining makes me cool then damn the writers at the AV Club are some of the coolest motherfuckers on the planet, right?  Due to all their complaining?

          • mshep-av says:

Lilly is still very vocal about her position on vaccines, and will talk at great length to anyone that asks about it, as recently as literally today.
            https://www.esquire.com/entertainment/movies/a42925314/evangeline-lilly-ant-man-and-the-wasp-quantumania-interview-2023/

Had to google Kaling, and yeah, that one anecdote, played up for comedy on a late night talk show, has not aged well, and if Kaling has exhibited a pattern of workplace sexual harassment, I sincerely hope she’s held accountable.

          • chestrockwell24-av says:

But again your logic is not the logic the people on this site are using. Even you seem to know this, since you know they will continue to bring up what Louis CK did regardless of if he ever does it again. So they are still being hypocritical. And for me: drugging and robbing someone is pretty awful even if you’re poor. If it’s not worse than an adult jerking off in front of other adults without permission then it’s definitely on the same level. When you mention she should be held accountable if she shows a pattern of the same behavior it comes off like you’re suggesting she should only face consequences if she sexually assaults a co-worker for a 2nd time. Is that an accurate assessment of what you meant?

          • gargsy-av says:

          • chestrockwell24-av says:

To be fair, you were at least cordial. Didn’t get riled up either. The other day someone responded to me with the same response 20 times in a row, spammed. A different person did it today, but on a lesser scale. Damn I feel like I’m coming down from a high and I feel a bit guilty.  I didn’t mean to break anyone’s brain.  I honestly didn’t think people would take this stuff that seriously.

          • chestrockwell24-av says:

Whaaat no man they totally own me and put me in my place.  Haven’t you seen folk congratulate each other over the epic spankings they have given me?  Those geniuses could never be wrong.  They are too smart to be baited by the likes of me!

          • martyfunkhouser1-av says:

I mean, what makes you so sure about Louis CK?

          • chestrockwell24-av says:

I admit I can’t be sure that he isn’t still up to his old tricks, but we haven’t heard anything about it lately.Just like I technically can’t be sure Cardi B doesn’t still drug and rob people. I mean she probably doesn’t.  I can’t swear upon a bible or anything(I’d burst into flames, long story) but yeah.

          • gargsy-av says:

            “But it wont be mentioned.”

Because she has left that in her past, unlike Lilly.

            Weird how that works, eh?

        • bagman818-av says:

There’s nothing ‘wrong’ with having opinions, no. Regardless of how ill-informed they are. However, if you have a public platform and you start spewing nonsense that puts people’s lives in danger? Well, there’s something wrong with that.

          • chestrockwell24-av says:

She didn’t put people’s lives in danger. And if that is the criteria? Then there is no reason for AV Club to mention Louis CK’s jerk off sessions or Roseannes racist tweets in the future. But we both know they will.Just face it: they’re hypocritical on this matter.

          • timebobby-av says:

You guys really need to get your story straight. First it was “you are killing grandma by not staying home.” But then it was, the shot doesn’t stop you from getting COVID or spreading it. So who else are you endangering by not getting the shot?

          • dudebra-av says:

            My apologies.
There’s no way you would get a hooker. Creeps like you get off on stiffing the waitress at the local Applebee’s.

          • chestrockwell24-av says:

It’s kind of funny you mention that because just the other day I was talking with some friends about how I’ve never once been to Applebee’s.   Is it good?  What do you recommend?

          • gargsy-av says:

“just the other day I was talking with some friends”

Okay so which specific people were put in danger because Evangeline Lilly came out against vaccine mandates? I’d like specific examples please, nothing dubious like “I’m sure somewhere out there at least one person listened to her and died”.

          • vorpal-socks-av says:

So let’s be clear here: Your required criteria for conceding this argument is that you want the name (and presumably formal death certificate) of a person who yelled “I believed Evangeline Lilly!” as they died of Covid?

Just want to make sure I’ve got that right.

          • chestrockwell24-av says:

If you’re suggesting I want proof someone is responsible for people dying before we say they got people killed then yeah man guilty. Are you suggesting we just take it as a given that someone out there loved Evangeline Lilly so much they refused a vaccine?  Just want to make sure I’ve got that right.

          • vorpal-socks-av says:

I’m not suggesting anything other than that you are probably an idiot.

        • liebkartoffel-av says:

When you think about it, reasonable discourse really is all about “sniffing each other’s facts.” Excellent point, dismissed troll!

        • buttsoupbarnes-av says:

Nah. Trolling trolls is the way to go.It’s what they want. And the more an obvious troll is obviously trolling in a place like this… the less time he’s spending ruining people’s lives by having to interact with him.

I mean look either they say that and get guff form you or they *don’t* say it and some other person or persons complain about how they are mentioning Lily without bringing up her anti-vax statements. You could, you know, just let it go.Granted, so could I.

      • chestrockwell24-av says:

I could let it go, or I could point out their selective outrage. Will Smith slaps someone: bad. Cardi B drugs and robs men: slay queen mothafucking slay! *dances to WAP*
Needs to be called out. And considering this article has zero to do with covid or vaccines? It would be valid to not mention anything about her stance on vaccines.

        • gargsy-av says:

“Cardi B drugs and robs men: slay queen mothafucking slay!”

Care to point out a person who is celebrating it?

        • nonotheotherchris-av says:

But why though? What on earth does it gain you? I realize the same could be said for me bothering to point out the inanity of your “umm actually-ing”, but it just really is mystifying to me.

          • chestrockwell24-av says:

Why are you so mystified?  This site gains nothing from calling her an anti vaxxer either, yet they did it.  It didn’t enhance the article,  it has zero to do with the subject.  But they did it.  So calling out their bullshit is fair game IMO.

          • jgreer404-av says:

Ummm.. maybe from now skip articles that have titles or subtitles that trigger you so hard? Just a thought.

          • chestrockwell24-av says:

If it actually made me legitimately angry I would, but it doesn’t. I originally made one post, I’ve made others in response to people. It’s not like I just kept randomly going “how the fuck could they label her this reeee!”
A motherfucker actually had the audacity to get all indignant because I asked for proof she was *checks notes* getting people killed lol. They legit believe it should be a given that some asshole out there has such a hard on for Lilly they refused the vaccine because of her. How can one not be amused by these people? It’s almost as funny as the time I was labeled a date rapist because I dont think Meghan Markle is a constant victim.
I’ve said it before: someone said I’m playing 4D chess.  Nope, I’m playing checkers against children with down syndrome and I’m fucking killing it.

          • nonotheotherchris-av says:

When did anyone ever say it wasn’t “fair game”? Sure, say whatever you like. Of all the injustices and hypocrisies in the world you could spend your time railing against, AV club writers dropping not-relevant jabs to celebrities on their vax opinions seems like the smallest possible fish you could go after, aside of course what I doing which is discussing that with someone who is spending their time pointing out said hypocrisies, so I’ll probably stop that now.

        • electricsheep198-av says:

And why didn’t they bring up the fact that Roman Polanski raped a 13 year-old in an article about Evangeline Lilly?

      • chestrockwell24-av says:

I mean the Polanski tidbit is just as relevant to the article as her being an anti vaxxer lol.I wasn’t saying bring up Cardi B drugging and robbing folk in articles about Lilly. I was correctly pointing out they don’t drudge up that shit when they discuss her.Save the Polanski stuff for articles about Meryl Streep or Natalie Portman. Both signed petitions in support of him, so surely the fact they supported a rapist will be randomly mentioned the next time they write an article about those women.  Right?

        • gargsy-av says:

“I wasn’t saying bring up Cardi B drugging and robbing folk in articles about Lilly.”

Then why bring it up, since as you admit it has nothing to do with the article?

I’m just not sure what covid or vaccines have to do with an article about her turning down superhero roles. I don’t see the connection there. Yo do you not recognize that there’s nothing wrong with being a prostitute but there is fundamentally something shitty about being an anti-vaxxer. Don’t lump prostitutes in with anti-vaxxers. Anti-vaxxers are actively harming people with their choice.

      • chestrockwell24-av says:

That’s cool. She also admitted to drugging and robbing men, so they can lead with that instead of the hooker thing. But my point is: they wont. They wont say shit about it. There will never be a line that goes “Cardi B, rapper and robber of men, released a new single today”. Or Mindy Kaling. There wont ever be a line that goes “Mindy Kaling, who sexually assaulted a co-worker on the set of her show, gave an interview today about Velma”. But rest assured that every single article on here about Louis CK from now until the end of time will make reference to his jerking off in front of women.
Also: Lilly doesnt seem to be against vaccines, just mandates.

Why didn’t that motherfucker just back flip his way I mount doom?I did like some aspects of those movies.  They made Sauron bad ass, now it was clear why everyone was so afraid.  In the original trilogy all we see him do is knock people around with super strength.

“I am way too authentic for my own good”*eyeroll* That’s called being rude.“Oh, they’re doing something very different and very cool,”Oh, you mean they’re making billions of dollars and you wanted some of it?I’ve always disliked Evangeline Lilly. I thought it was because Kate from Lost is literally the worst character to have ever been on a screen, and I felt I was being unfair to the actor in my distaste, but now I don’t really feel guilty about it anymore. She seems like the worst.

    • coolhandtim-av says:

This is why I’d hate to be a celebrity. You can’t even share your honest thoughts without some rando on the internet judging each and every word and then using them to shit all over you.

      • adelet-av says:

You can’t even share your honest thoughts without some rando on the internet judging each and every word and then using them to shit all over you.
You just responded to a poster on the internet by saying that. You’re due for some introspection.

        • coolhandtim-av says:

So did you. See you at the introspection party.

          • adelet-av says:

I’m not the one telling people they shouldn’t waste their time judging responses on the internet.  I do it all the time! For fun! And unlike you I’m not a hypocrite about it.

          • coolhandtim-av says:

            Yes, you absolutely are.

However, the larger issue is that you completely missed my original point, which was that one of the downsides of being famous is that you can’t speak openly and honestly without some nobody on the internet shitting all over you. People you do that should find something more useful to do with their time.

So yeah, forgive me if I completely and ignore your criticism due to it being utterly misplaced.

          • electricsheep198-av says:

“People you do that should find something more useful to do with their time.”Weird that you think what you’re doing is a useful thing to do with your time. First of all, when the thing you’re being “open and honest about” is how you are consistently rude to people’s faces, then yes, I’m gonna have some thoughts about that. And when the other thing you are being “open and honest about” is not even honest (you and I both know she joined Marvel for the cash), then I’ll have thoughts about that too. Also, it’s not as if I’m DMing her these thoughts. She doesn’t read AVClub or these comments. Anyway, if I were a celebrity bothered by what people had to say about my “open and honest” thoughts, I’d either 1) keep my thoughts to myself or 2) dry my tears with my millions of dollars in cash.I see that you think you are on a high horse because you are judging… random regular people on the internet… rather than the oh so very vulnerable rich and famous, and if that’s really what you think there’s no amount of help for your delusions. In summary, don’t worry about how I use my time. You are aware of what I’ve done with approximately 3 minutes of my time. Just so you know, I couldn’t have used that 3 minutes to cure cancer or solve the environmental crisis, but I assure you that most of the other minutes of my day are spent on much more worthwhile endeavors than talking about Evangeline Lilly. I imagine you, too, have wasted 3 minutes of your day today too. I think that’s allowed.  So yeah, forgive me if I completely ignore your criticism due to it being utterly misplaced and completely hypocritical.

          • coolhandtim-av says:

I would get it if this person was spewing hate speech or misogyny etc. but they’re really just voicing an opinion on this persons work, which she puts on full display so that the public can absolutely do that. Do you really think Lilly is a person who didn’t chose to be a celebrity and doesn’t enjoy having their opinions all over peoples screens.

Yes show me a post where I suggest I’d get mad cuz black people can go to college or women can vote. You made the claim, yet you expect me to be the one to prove or disprove it?And why is Salma going “I’m too hot for comedies” somehow okay, but what Lilly said is wrong? You never actually explained, just corrected my spelling and then labeled me racist and sexist.I bet if I pressed you for proof you’d show me saying something rude about someone who happens to be black and say it’s racist, or something bad about someone who happens to be a woman and say it’s sexist.

          • electricsheep198-av says:

I didn’t say you suggested that you’d get mad about those things. I told you that’s the impression I got from the totality of your posts. I didn’t make a claim about you. I made a claim about what I’m sure of. I made a claim about me and my impression of you, and I don’t have to prove shit to you, and I didn’t ask you to prove shit to me. I said if you want to see your posts, you have as much (or more) access to them as I do, so go look. I also didn’t say Salma’s statement was “okay,” dummy. I said nothing about it at all. Build your strawman somewhere else.

          • chestrockwell24-av says:

Olympic level mental gymnastics aside, you’re right you don’t need to prove anything. But you seemed quite sure I was racist so I figured maybe at least one thing would stick out in your mind.  I mean surely it came from somewhere?  Plus I can’t be racist, I had a black friend in 3rd grade.

          • electricsheep198-av says:

Only someone whose brain couldn’t muster the ability to get off the mental couch would think that simple reading comprehension took “Olympic level gymnastics.”

It was not my intention to hit a nerve.   I mean calling it “Olympic level” is sort of a compliment.

          • electricsheep198-av says:

I know you intended it as a compliment, which is why I thought it was so sad that you think the basic ability to read and understand words rises to Olympic levels. But there are a number of programs available for you when you feel ready to reach out for help.

      • cosmicghostrider-av says:

Wait what? This is a real thing. It happened to Chris Hemsworth until Thor: Ragnarok. Pretty people don’t get to be in comedies. I’ve had this close friend for 5 or 6 years and she’s very pretty and she had this friend who would always go to parties with her and that friend would go to every guy at the party and be like “don’t talk to her she doesn’t like men she’s a lesbian”. And I talked to her and it turned out nobody talked to her because she was so pretty / her friend telling people not to approach her, and she enjoyed me treating her like a normal person. 7 years later she is the only person from that era of parties I keep up with.

One of the most disappointing things about Lost was how when we finally started getting flashbacks to Kate’s backstory those episodes were insanely tedious and awful. And yet I still liked Kate anyway on the island! I am not sure I agree that Evangeline Lilly has a special “authenticity” that makes her characters work, but she has something.

    • wellijustcouldnotsay-av says:

Fascinating. I never watched Lost but The Wasp absolutely ruined the Ant Man franchise for me. The character has ZERO charisma and less than zero chemistry with Ant Man. It’s an underwritten character but Michelle Pfeiffer manages to do a lot more with an equally underwritten role. I felt this way before learning of Lily’s ignorance, over-confidence, and selfishness. What do you see in her performance that I’m missing? She’s hot, sure, but so is nearly everyone in movies.

      • robgrizzly-av says:

Boy do I agree about The Wasp! There’s a reason she is completely forgotten whenever people bring up the MCU’s best female characters. But I would suggest checking out Lost, because she is pretty good in it.

This is some bullshit writing calling her a “Professed Anti-Vaxxer” in the subtitle for this write up. What does that have to do with anything? And she isn’t anti-vax, she was anti-Covid-19 Vax.  Can you write an article Mary without subjecting a bitchy slant to it?  Guess not.

She was also anti-masking, and anti-isolation, and boasted about not being under “Corona House Arrest” while also living with an immunocompromised family member (her father, who had stage 4 leukemia), and claimed COVID-19 is just a “respiratory flu” and a conspiracy to manipulate voters (“there’s ‘something’ every election year”). She then issued a nonpology that painted all the COVID concern as “hysteria”.The author was being generous by only calling her an anti-vaxxer.

      • donnation-av says:

When they reviewed Black Panther II here did they subtitle it with Professed Non-Vaxxer Letitia Wright stars as the new Black Panther? Nope they sure didn’t. So spare me your diatribe on the author is being generous in her remarks. It is played out and has zero reason to even be written. Mary Kate, per usual, was just being an asshole. Leave the anti-vax bullshit to the commenters where it would no doubt be brought up.

  • Shampyon-av says:

After reading the leaked Joss Whedon Wonder Woman script… Yeah, she made the right choice. The damn thing verges on “she breasted boobily” at times, he throws in his “barefoot naïf” fetish, he writes the titular character as an arrogant fool who needs a strong man to put her in her place… He basically just slapped a Wonder Woman veneer over the worst parts of all his prior work. I’m not an Evangeline Lilly fan, but there aren’t a lot of actors I’d wish that script on.

  • coatituesday-av says:

her manager convinced her to check out some of the MCU entriesSo before that happened, she didn’t like Marvel movies because of… what, the toys?

    • blahhhhh2-av says:

It’s probably simpler – she had already played a “bad-assed” character and like the Shatner’s or Ford’s of the world, the fear of getting typecast was probably very real for her.The fact she never really got consistent gigs after Lost anyway is probably more responsible for her changing her tune – but choosing to not just keep doing the same stuff is a valid artistic direction.Playing catwoman?  Arguably good for Anne Hathaway.  The same might not have been true for Lilly

      • coatituesday-av says:

You’re probably right. I never warmed to her on Lost (or to the show actually) and never thought she was that skilled. And while I don’t think she’s perfect in the Ant-man movies, she fits in really well with Rudd and Douglas.

  • worsehorse-av says:

God forbid we talk about anything but her vaccine stance, but any speculation on which X-part she was under consideration for? The only thing I can think of offhand is the Lynn Collins role in WOLVERINE ORIGINS. . .

    • robgrizzly-av says:

Yea, Lily’s got everyone fighting, and I just wanted to speculate!
So let’s break it down: She couldn’t have been in Origins, because that already came out before Real Steel. And the franchise had just rebooted with First Class the same year. I doubt they already had a story for DoFP yet (there’s nothing in that for her anyway), so maybe she would have been in the Wolverine followup which was The Wolverine? The key female characters in that needed to be Japanese, so that leaves Evangeline Lily as… Viper?

    • cosmicghostrider-av says:

Lightening up on anti-vaxxers is a crappy stance. Your being by wanting to avoid the issue. Being anti-vaxxer really isn’t cool and it really is bigger than “people are entitled to their opinions”. Just to reiterate, being an anti-vaxxer is actually harmful to others, it’s not the same as a political belief. Being an anti-vaxxer is like raising your hand and saying you don’t want to participate in society.

      • worsehorse-av says:

I didn’t say anything about lightening up on her. I think Lily’s anti-vax statements are dunderheaded and irresponsible. But I also don’t think her stance needs to be rebroadcast and criticized anew in *every* news article that mentions her name from now until the end of time. The volume and vitriol in the comments below this article are certainly appropriate in the later article that WAS about her anti-vax crap (https://www.avclub.com/evangeline-lilly-says-marvel-has-been-very-respectful-1850131159), but seemed disproportionate here, IMO, in a piece about roles she turned down before there even was a pandemic.
