Family Guy stopped joking long enough to pay tribute to Carrie Fisher

Aux Features Carrie Fisher

In addition to her numerous, iconic roles in film and television, Carrie Fisher did her fair share of voice acting work. Most notably, she voiced Angela, manager of Pawtucket Brewery’s shipping department and Peter Griffin’s boss on Family Guy. With the two-year anniversary of Carrie Fisher’s passing just around the corner, Family Guy took time out of last night’s episode to pay tribute to both the actress and her character with a touching eulogy.

There are jokes in there too, of course. In fact, it’s mostly jokes—this is Family Guy after all. But, after quoting multiple sitcom theme songs and providing a goofy reason for Angela’s death (“Swimming less than twenty minutes after she ate.”), Peter’s eulogy takes on a more serious tone, clearly referring more towards Fisher than the character of Angela. “She had grace, courage, and an unmatched zest for life,” he says. “She may be gone, but her voice will live on in DVD and Hulu Plus and tiny droid-projected messages. I may have lost a boss, but heaven has gained a princess.”

Clearly, everybody on that show is old enough to be classy; this is proof that a new cruder-than-thou animated show will soon emerge, to terrify the well-to-do.

I thought that whole thing was cool and touching. Right up until they stole the “oops, wrong funeral” joke from the Free Churro episode of Bojack Horseman. Or maybe that was their way of saying they got the idea to finally eulogize Carrie Fisher (it’s been two years since she died) by watching that episode of Bojack? However they ended up copying that joke, it was a strange and distracting end to an otherwise nice moment.

They had a lot of her dialogue recorded to last past her death, so they probably waited until they had nothing left for her character.

    • legokinjago-av says:

The “oops, wrong funeral/church” is an old The Vicar of Dibley joke. And I’m sure someone had made it even before that show, so they didn’t steal shit.

Well, animation takes a long time to complete. Unless you’re South Park and doing it all in a computer on the fly, the process is months from beginning to end. So they had plenty of stuff already when she passed. By the time it takes them to get that out and get around to an opportunity to include it, two years is about right for when it’d finally make it to air.

“About right”? Nope. Far from it.
At its *fastest*, FG takes 8 months from recording vocals to airing the episode. Fisher died during production hiatus for 2016 holidays – the *latest* she could have recorded vocals was November 2016.She wasn’t recording lines 25 months ago for scripts that weren’t written yet. If her lines for cut-aways and side-gags were still being utilized much later, the show is *even more* formulaic and paint-by-numbers than its always been, and that’s really an achievement.

      That hardly originated with BoJack.

To be fair, it just took a while for the manatees to pull both a Carrie Fisher ball and a eulogy ball in the same week.

I don’t think they produced episode in the past three months. They aren’t South Park.

And like clockwork the Bojack Horseman fan appears and accuses someone of ripping off a bit that was created before they were born….

  • Nitelight62-av says:

I think they stopped joking around Season 4.

  • hootiehoo2-av says:

The last line about heaven gaining a princess, you could feel coming from a mile away but it was still so touching. Loved it.

  • charliedesertly-av says:

How are there seventeen seasons of that show?

    • thatguy0verthere-av says:

Because millions of people watch and enjoy it. I don’t care for The Big Bang theory, but you don’t hear my whining.Let people enjoy things.

      • cobbtastic-av says:

Thank you! I watch it every week and enjoy it. It’s not high-brow humour, but I’m a smart guy forced to do smart guy things all day and I could use some farts to make me laugh in the evening.

  • ispeakamerican-av says:

    People still watch this?

  • the-misanthrope-av says:

I must be a bit dense, because I thought Angela was voiced by Candice Bergen. Requiesce in pace, in any case.

    • schmapdi-av says:

I think she was originally voiced by Bergen in the original series (before it was cancelled and came back a few years later).

      • kianworld-av says:

Candice voiced a lawyer in season 2’s “I Am Peter, Hear Me Roar”

Angela was a post-cancellation character made when Peter started working at the brewery

  • bostonbeliever-av says:

Pretty good, pretty good. The best joke is the opening joke; the worst joke is the “wrong funeral” reveal—not because they “stole” it from Bojack, but because it can’t avoid comparison to Bojack…and suffer for it. But it was sweet and amusing, and I’m glad they paid tribute to her.

  • royaldutchofdukes-av says:

I thought for sure the line would be, “at least she died doing what she loved – an eight-ball.”
