Saturday Night Live is hoping to inject a little reliability into one of the most upsettingly uncertain weeks in recent American history; per Vulture, the NBC sketch show has announced that live TV stalwarts the Foo Fighters will serve as the musical guest on this Saturday’s post-election installment of the series, which will be hosted (in what’s apparently now a tradition) by stand-up stalwart Dave Chappelle.

Dave Grohel et al. have served as musical guest for the series seven times at this point, dating back all the way to 1995. (That’s to say nothing of their numerous stints on other live-ish TV series, including their near artist-in-residence run for Dave Letterman.) In other words, we can expect some deeply-comforting-at-this-point competence and professionalism, and also hopefully some “Everlong,” plus presumably something off the new album they were getting ready to release just ahead of the nigh-complete shutdown of the live music industry. (Grohl has, instead, made headlines of late by getting into a series of what we can only assume are incredibly bitter drumming competitions with young prodigy Nandi Bushell.)

Of course, there’s also the open question of what the hell Saturday Night Live is even going to look like this week; as we publish this story, it’s still not clear what the results of the 2020 election will be, which has got to be very stressful, not just on the writers, but on the people whose job it is to strap Jim Carrey into his Joe Biden costume and calibrate the tightness of his terrifying and unsettling grin.

Can there be a Saturday if this week never ends?

Awesome choice of Chappelle for the post-election show, as he was the host for the last one! They definitely need to revisit the sketch where he and Chris Rock observe Democrat supporter reactions on election night, this time while they watch Trump declare victory at 2 a.m.As for the Foo Fighters, well, you can’t go wrong with the Foo Fighters. And they get the added benefit of the band always being up for participating in a skit or two.

With the amount of soul crushing or joy that could happen between now and then, I don’t know stability can be brought in any form by Foo Fighters.

I was going to joke that there’s a chance we still won’t be “post-election” come Saturday.

It has to be incredibly weird to be writing and practicing skits today and tomorrow knowing that the difference between Biden winning or losing closely will wildly change everything

I like the Foo Fighters. They are a good band.

i like the sketch Dave Grohl was in about 10 years ago, where a bunch of 50-something dads get the old band back together for one of their daughter’s wedding but it turns out they’re a DC’83 style hardcore band and smash the place up

Seems worth observing that SNL has started off this season with 5 comedian hosts in the first 6 episodes, 4 of whom are experienced stand-ups. Compare this to last season, where they only had 4 actual comedians host all season in the 15 episodes that aired before the pandemic. At a time when SNL seems steadfastly dedicated to bringing in ringers, at least they’re using the one slot that is actually supposed to be filled by a ringer quite well.
