Get Out and Call Me By Your Name take top honors at the Gotham Film Awards

The Golden Globes may have no fucking idea how to handle an idiosyncratic horror film like Get Out, but the Gotham Independent Film Awards has a simple answer: Just give it some justly deserved honors, labels be damned.

Last night, the Gotham Awards show, essentially the first major film awards of the season, decided to show some love for Jordan Peele’s directorial debut. Along with the movie getting the Audience Award and his win for Best Screenplay, Peele also received the Breakthrough Director Award. But Luca Guadagnino’s moving romance Call Me By Your Name also picked up a couple of major wins: Costar Timothée Chalamet received the Breakthrough Actor award, and the film claimed the top prize of Best Feature, increasing its chances of an Oscar nod, à la previous winners Moonlight, Spotlight, and Birdman,

The complete list of winners is below, though we here at The A.V. Club are all pretty much in agreement that the weirdest win on this list goes to James Franco for his turn as Tommy Wiseau in The Disaster Artist.
