We’re living in a Godzilla renaissance at the moment, with everyone’s favorite lizard showing up on Apple TV+ and a very buzzy new movie out of Japan, and in case you ever needed a very clear example of the different ways that Japanese filmmakers and western filmmakers treat the big guy, just compare this trailer for Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire with literally anything from Godzilla Minus One. The latter is a movie that uses Godzilla to say something, the former appears to be a movie about Godzilla and King Kong teaming up to fight an evil ape who lives in the secret world that exists inside our planet. Also, this trailer opens with a line about how people thought life could only exist on the surface of the Earth, which is nonsense. What about worms? They live underground.

Godzilla x Kong : The New Empire | Official Trailer

Anyway, Godzilla Vs. Kong ended in a wild way, with humanity discovering that our world is hollow and that big apes like Kong came from inside the hollow planet, so the sequel was obviously going to have to get wild as well. So what happens in this trailer? Well, Godzilla evolves to a new form that’s very pink (Hi Barbie!), Kong adopts a baby kong, and also Kong gets some kind of mecha arm. It looks wacky, but it could also be fun. It’s certainly going to be rad when Godzilla and Kong start bashing the shit out of this evil ape (who is apparently called Skar King).

Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire comes from director Adam Wingard and stars Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and Dan Stevens. It’ll be in theaters on April 12, 2024. (Now, how do you pronounce the X in the title? “Cross”? “Ecks”? Is it silent, like Spy X Family?)

Godzilla 2014 was ok, pretty decent setup.King of the Monsters was terrible. Stupid.GvK was worse.I’m out on this series. I look forward to the mocking of that scene of them running.

It’s stupid yes, but AWESOME! Anyone who think movie of giant monster trashing city or imaginative location stupid, should just watch life Documentary .

      • nilus-av says:

I prefer when they are guys in rubber suits but yeah this is the sorta thing you need to just shut your brain off and pop an edible and just enjoy the ride

      • minimummaus-av says:

I really want to see Godzilla Minus One for some serious monster storytelling, but Godzilla and Kong as two kaijuheroes running to confront an enemy just tickled my apey lizard brain in a fun way.

You make idea words good so me not know what think!!

    • prof-bananasgoldsteinberg-av says:

You forgot Skull Island, which had no right being as good as it was. I thought Godzilla 2014 was really good though. A serious disaster film masquerading as a monster movie. And it holds up as a strong movie even now. Then there’s Skull Island, which, see above. KotM was dumb but I liked seeing Godzilla and Ghidora go at it. Then GvK was full of eye-roll moments for me. And then when Adam Wingard was announced as returning to direct this one I lost faith. But then there’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters which I haven’t watched yet but by most accounts seems to be pretty good. It at least looked more in line with 2014. Which got my attention. I don’t know what I’m trying to say other than this franchise is all over the fucking place.

      • knappsterbot-av says:

Monarch is a solid C+ or B- minus so far, they haven’t gotten to the meat of it yet but it’s fun to watch the Russell’s be gruff yet charming and running from danger with their respective motley crews.

        • prof-bananasgoldsteinberg-av says:

I mean, if you tell me The Boys Russell are good in it that’s enough for me. Really I’m just hoping this is a sign that Wyatt is softening on his “I don’t want to play my dad’s characters” stance. If only because I want him to play Snake Plissken in a new “Escape”. Because it’s either that or it’ll get a shitty remake. But at least The Rock seems to be preoccupied with other things now.

    • Ruhemaru-av says:

GvK went so far out of its way to give Kong a chance against Godzilla that I just gave up, figuring that they’d have to team up since Mecha-Godzilla was shown off in the first trailer.
I will say that I genuinely hate the human side of the story for these films. The second film killed off the best ‘good’ characters and we were left with the worst ones making it through to the sequels.

      • engineerthefuture-av says:

I will say that I genuinely hate the human side of the story for these films. That seems to be the case for any Kaiju like movies, including the Transformers, for the most part. For every movie with giant monsters/machines that has a decent human story line, it feels like there are 4 more where the humans make it worse.

    • coolgameguy-av says:

That scene of them running together is… pretty silly. GvK gave Godzilla some mobility by making him kind of slithery and playing into the reptilian qualities when fighting Kong, but he’s still no runner.

    • fever-dog-av says:

I thought they fought monsters inside the Earth last movie.  What gives?

  • happywinks-av says:

What the hell is up with that depth of field at 1:11?

  • ghboyette-av says:

I fucking love Adam Wingard. Aside from DeathNote, his films have been pretty awesome.

  • thatprisoner-av says:

Can’t wait for the production number where pink Godzilla sings, “I’m Not Yen Enough!”

  • daveassist-av says:

Give me Matthew Broderick’s Godzilla or give me death by Mothra’s Taco Bell chihuahuas!!!

  • spokelee-av says:

The snark I keep seeing about American vs Japanese Godzilla is so dumb. There are a ton of goofy mindless Japanese Godzilla movies, if you’re using Minus One to knock the new American ones, you might as well just use it to shit on 1/3 of the Japanese catalogue.

  • elrond-hubbard-elven-scientologist-av says:

Now that there’s a baby Kong, Godzooky can’t be far behind.

  • coolgameguy-av says:

I mean… if you’re willing to go this nuts with the story, why not just add the Pacific Rim franchise into the loop? Godzilla teaming up with Jaegers would pop a lot more boners than more ‘King Kong’s family’ stuff.

Of course, I’ll still be there during opening weekend because I love Kaiju stuff.

    • dirtside-av says:

I would pay good money—all the good money—to see a Godzilla/Pacific Rim crossover movie.Just have the first two minutes of the movie be Godzilla swimming deep under the ocean, and then suddenly a portal opens and he’s sucked through before he can do anything. Poof, he’s in the Pacific Rim world, and THERE WILL BE NO FURTHER QUESTIONS

  • mattthecatania-av says:

I’m glad to see Chaos from Primal Rage finally got a new gig!

  • caseycontrarian-av says:

This looks incredibly stupid. And not in a fun way. The Monsterverse show has been pretty watchable so far. Godzilla Minus Zero is a truly beautiful film.

  • dr-boots-list-av says:

Godzilla, now starring in Breast Health Awareness Month!

  • nx-1700-av says:

Maybe its a different Godzilla Pink flame ,looks smaller than last pic ,was frozen in Ice …… Godzilla’s wife ?? Lady “G” ?? or did Big G transition ??

  • mr-rubino-av says:

Godzilla finally going Super Saiyan Rose? It’s only natural.

  • breadnmaters-av says:

Babies are all the rage – babies and Barbies? Aquaman has one, but no baby mamma. We had to have a baby Yoda; now we gt a little monster. And baby Colin from WWDITS too. It makes me suspicious. No one can resist a cute baby?I just don’t like big monster flicks. My girlhood friend and I would stay up late watching Godzilla movie re-runs (the other monsters too). I was more grossed out and somewhat frightened than anything else. Idk, I don’t like anthropomorphizing. Del Toro disappointed me with Pacific Rim. I cherish his early works which are unquestionably a genuine expression of that artist’s conerns about art, humanity, the world. They are innovative and so personal. The other stuff is Hollywood fare (except for Hellboy I&II, imo). It’s distinctive but not very moving. Got off the subject. Maybe what bothers me about these creature features is that they’ve become so literal. The tech makes them incredibly lifelike. The only thing I enjoyed about the old versions was their obvious artifice. Campiness. The stop-motion movies are their own kind of cool.Maybe we should be grateful that Marvel didn’t inundate us with babies.

By why let the actual history of the character get in the way of getting in a cheap line?

  • eatshit-and-die-av says:

Looks like dog shit. Toho should be ashamed of themselves for allowing the US to make such garbage.

  • spookypants-av says:

Was hoping for an end-of-trailer zinger that sets up Godzilla x Kong + Ecks vs Sever.

  • coldsavage-av says:

With Godzilla getting some buzz lately (especially some kind of America v Japan interpretation of Godzilla) I wanted to throw out something that still confuses me about Godzilla 1954. In that movie (uh, spoilers, I guess) the ending hinges on the protagonists getting a device which sucks all of the oxygen out of the water, killing Godzilla but a bunch of marine life in the process. Ultimately, they decide to use the weapon. It always struck me as odd that the solution to stopping Godzilla – a metaphor for the dangers of an environment-altering weapon of mass destruction – required the use of… an environment-altering weapon of mass destruction. Like, having just gone through it, I would have guessed that Japan would have sought another way to deal with the threat narratively to fit the metaphor.

    • yodathepeskyelf-av says:

Well I’m no screenwriter but it sounds to me like a bog standard case of dramatic irony.

    • roboyuji-av says:

Well, the guy who invented it also kills himself at the end to destroy the knowledge of how to build it, which only he knows. So the movie is pretty openly aware of the irony of the solution. And decades later there’s a whole movie about the threat THAT weapon creates in Destoroyah.

  • lorad-av says:

I like the first American Godzilla, though I thought it was a mistake to write out Cranston’s character as he was the best actor/character in the movie and instead let Taylor- Johnson lead it. King of the Monsters has awesome character designs for the monsters and has some cool moments. It also had a terrible plot and tries so hard to push a terrible human plot line. I enjoyed GvK as it leaned a bit more into campy goofey fun and it was cool to see Kong and Godzilla bash things around, but again the plot was horrible. This looks like a Saturday Morning Cartoon or a fan fiction?  A robotic armed Kong and a Pink Godzilla, WTF. It looks even worse next to the awesome Godzilla Minus One release which is a great great movie.

  • themantisrapture-av says:

You know what, fuck it.I’ll do what I did when going to Godzilla Vs Kong;Get incredibly high and watch the ridiculousness unfold with a stupid grin on my face. And people moaning about Godzilla running; dude went beast mode in the last one, running like a fucking alligator at one point, it was beautiful.

  • hootiehoo2-av says:

As wonderful and heartbreaking as Minus One was… I need some stupid monster fights now. Bring it on! Granted another giant Ape bores me…. Give me GIGAN or Destoroyah!

  • jthane-av says:

I would bet good money that Godzilla’s coloration was meant to be purple, like the Godzilla 2000 design. And nobody thought ahead to “what happens when something purple glows really bright?”And so we get Barbzilla.
