Who will (and should) win at the 2023 Golden Globes

The Golden Globes are back on the air this year, and they may give us some ideas about how the Oscar race is shaping up

After taking a year off to polish its tarnished image, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is back on TV this year to stage the 80th Annual Golden Globe Awards in front of a live audience. Whether the winners will truly be the best Hollywood has to offer or merely the beneficiaries of the most effective studio lobbying campaigns (as was often the case in the past), remains to be seen. Responding to criticisms of questionable ethics and lack of diversity, the organization has hired new leadership, added 21 journalists to its membership, barred voters from accepting gifts from studios, and opened its voting pool to more than 100 additional nonmember voters, including more diverse voices. That was good enough for NBC, which will broadcast the awards on its flagship network as well as its Peacock streaming platform on Tuesday, January 10.

Controversies aside, there’s no denying the impact the Golden Globes have on other races as the first big award show of the season. The Academy begins its Oscars nomination period on Jan. 12, just two days after the Golden Globes ceremony. With that in mind, we’re making our predictions for who will win, and who we think should win, in the Globes’ major film categories as well as the top TV races. If any of these end up being wrong, we’re going to blame it on the HFPA, which clearly still has some work to do to address its broken voting system…

Angela Bassett,  Kerry Condon, Jamie Lee Curtis, Dolly De Leon, Carey Mulligan, Who will win: Angela BassettAlthough Angela Bassett has yet to win an Oscar, she did receive a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress for her powerhouse performance as Tina Turner in the 1993 biopic What’s Love Got To Do With It. So the HFPA clearly likes her. We think they’ll honor her again, as the Globes don’t seem to have any hangups about giving out big awards to genre films, as the Oscars tend to.Who should win: Angela BassettShe’s only gotten better with time, and she brought a level of intensity and pathos to Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever that elevated the film whenever she was on screen. Her heart-wrenching performance was one of the best parts of the film, and she should be recognized for it.

    Ummm… Babylon was a comedy?  I don’t recall laughing.

  • captjackhaddock-av says:

Still so insane to me that Butler was nominated for Drama instead of Comedy/Musical, given how many, uh, musical numbers there were

  • teageegeepea-av says:

I say Banshees should win Best Comedy, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress. It was the best film of 2022 that I saw.

    • buttsoupbarnes-av says:

Colin Farrell’s facial reaction, as Padraic, after Colm tells him “I don’t like you” early in the movie is practically worth an Oscar all by it self.

    • yellowfoot-av says:

Best Comedy and Best Actor for sure, but while I thought Kerry Condon was great, I don’t think she was greater than Stephanie Hsu. Unless you’re talking about Mrs. McCormick. Her standing on the cliff just watching Padraic is one of the scariest things I’ve ever seen.

      • teageegeepea-av says:

Stephanie Hsu wasn’t nominated by the Globes. Although even if she had been, I would still pick Condon.

        • dargarparmparmchillchillchill-av says:

You’re fucking stupid then.  Hsu as Joy in EEAAO is by far the best supporting actress role in a decade, not just this year.

  • kendull-av says:

I’d be happy if Everything Everywhere All At Once and Elvis didn’t win anything. Liked both films but not awards worthy. They’re flabby and boring in places.

  • jerdp01-av says:

That Banshees film was great. It should win everything.

Which “problems” does “The Whale” movie have exactly? Showing Fat people being lonely because they feel ashamed of themselves? Showing that it is hard and seriously unhealthy to be that fat and not at all “fun” like Lizzo yells in every mic she sees? Or is it a general problem to depict suffering fat people as it is “hurting” them? The truth hurts sometimes, yes. But it helps to get people to do something about the bad situation they are in.

    • ohnoray-av says:

and seriously unhealthy to be that fat and not at all “fun” like Lizzo yells in every mic she sees?oh fuck off with the condemnation of Lizzo, did you know fatness has very little indication of unhealthiness in comparison to thinness? The automatic assumption that being fat is unhealthy is just some very deep conditioning, and some leftoverisms from the puritans that continues to be pushed. There’s a huge differentiation between what you consume and being fat, the latter indicates nothing unless it’s morbid(and even then the research is shoddy when you can start calculating morbid obesity). so get outta here with your fatphobia, Lizzo is a healthy woman.

      • billyjennks-av says:

Dunno whether Lizzo is healthy but being obese in general and being 600pounds as Fraser’s character is, is certainly deeply unhealthy.

      • digableplanet-av says:

Fatphobia is about the most ridiculous term that has been thrust upon society in recent memory. Being morbidly obese is not healthy.

        • ohnoray-av says:

lol fuck off, fatphobia is a recent development, so ya’ll are the ones thrusting it on people. you really think fat people move through this world easily because of people like you telling them they’re not healthy? when in reality you have no idea who is healthy by looking at their body, especially when you actually look at the research and see that BMI actually is proven to be a pseudo science.

          • terranigma-av says:

We are laughing our asses off about you, little boy. Dont let scientific facts get in your way and yeah, whine all day. You are nothing but a bitter, sad lonely being. To use your favorite expression: FUCK OFF

    • cavalish-av says:

Someone come collect your man, he’s having a freak out because Lizzo exists again.

    • jessiewiek-av says:

What did Lizzo do to get dragged into this? She literally just exists as a fat person in entertainment. She’s not particularly an activist beyond the basics of not seeming to hate herself, and as far as I know she hasn’t made any comments on the Whale.

      • terranigma-av says:

Lizzo promotes this unhealthy lifestyle, thats why.

        • jessiewiek-av says:

Like I said before, she’s not an activist. Lizzo isn’t promoting any lifestyle. Being fat isn’t a lifestyle. She exists in her real human body and promotes her music and career. The absolute worst she could be accused of is proving fat people don’t have to lose weight to live their lives. So maybe don’t drag her into whatever your weird vendetta is.

          • terranigma-av says:

            1. I drag her into what I want, fangirl. I could not care less what a random fangirl like you thinks.2. She automatically promotes her unhealthy lifestyle because she has “admirers” that want to become just as fat as her and she never adressed this could be dangerous to their health. Which she HAS TO because she is a star / role model / public figure.

          • jessiewiek-av says:

Do you really, in your heart of hearts, believe anyone looks at Lizzo and thinks gosh, I’m going to intentionally gain weight to be like her? In your heart of hearts, you’re going to tell me that anyone is INSPIRED to be fat? That is, and I say this sincerely, one most unhinged things I’ve ever read in my life.

          • terranigma-av says:

Ok, I worded it the wrong way. It came across misunderstandable and that of course happened. It´s the already fat fans (who are the most vulnerable in that regard of course) that she is showing: “Its ok to continue eating 5 times a day at McDonalds. Being that fat is not bad for your overall health!”

  • iliterallyfightfire-av says:

I’d love to see Better Call Saul win everything, but it feels like a long shot at this point.

  • rigbyriordan-av says:

Barry Keoghan was actually the better supporting actor in Banshees.

  • rigbyriordan-av says:

When are we going to finally acknowledge that Barry is no longer a comedy?

    • ohnoray-av says:

But I still laugh! Come on, the bluetooth bomb with the app was total gags. It’s absurdist comedy about the absurdity of trying to mirror the tidy narratives we see on screen.

      • bc222-av says:

The offscreen tiger mauling was also a gas. Plus, any show that still employs Anthony Carrigan will always be considered a comedy.

  • dargarparmparmchillchillchill-av says:

Nope fuck this entire article.  If Michelle Yeoh doesn’t win Globes and Oscar the entire fucking industry is a goddamn sham.

  • gerky-av says:

So why wasn’t Rhea Seehorn nominated? Why are her contributions to Better Call Saul so consistently undervalued by awards shows?

  • billyjennks-av says:

Craig over Farrell is possibly the stupidest bit of comment bait I’ve seen here for months. Come on guys, do better.

  • llisser7787-av says:

There are three films nominated for both Best Picture – Drama and Best Director, not two.

  • hduffy-av says:

    “RRR” for pure awesomeness.

  • dpc61820-av says:

You know, we all know!, this is a deeply corrupt organization. Remember the awards last year? No? That’s because there weren’t any. There shouldn’t be this year, either. Pox on anyone reporting on this show.

  • KingKangNYC-av says:

    ..

  • 3rdshallot-av says:

i thought the GG’s were like racist or toxic or something, no?

  • presidentzod-av says:

Everything Everywhere All At Oncewas completely overrated.

    • bc222-av says:

Possibly. But I feel like this is going to be one of those years where we look back and wonder how Tar won all those Oscars and Everything Everywhere All at Once got shut out of all the big categories. Its losing will only make people remember it more fondly, I think. I doubt many people will rewatch Tar. If Everything Everywhere… comes on TV while I’m flipping through, I’m probably going to watch it every time.
(Though that’s probably true of most of the last 10 best picture winners. Anyone rewatching Greenbook or Shape of Water or Nomadland? And I totally forgot the movie Coda even existed. You have to go back to probably 17 years to The Departed or No Country for Old Men to find a truly rewatchable Best Picture)

      • danniellabee-av says:

You are correct. Best Picture is a crap category because so rarely does the actual best picture win. I genuinely liked Tar but it should not win Best Picture. When I think about the fact that Saving Private Ryan lost to Shakespeare in Love and Brokeback Mountain lost to Crash, I want to scream.

        • bc222-av says:

It really is the worst case of recency bias. Sometimes I think Best Picture should be awarded 5 or even 10 years later. Dole out all the other awards for actor, director, etc the same year… but I would love it if Best Picture had the benefit of hindsight. Honestly, you couldn’t even pay me to watch the last 10 Best Picture winners. If I had a choice to just do my normal everyday job or watch The Artist… I might actually pick work?

      • presidentzod-av says:

        Yeah they have been forgettable.
