Update: Ahead of the In Memoriam segment of the 64th annual Grammy awards, the Academy played a short tribute to Hawkins. The Foo Fighters, as host Trevor Noah mentioned, were scheduled to perform at tonight’s show. Set to the Foo Fighters’ classic “Hero,” the tribute video showed Hawkins in his element, behind the kit and backstage with the band.

Just over a week after the death of long-time drummer Taylor Hawkins, the Foo Fighters swept the rock categories at the Grammys tonight, taking home all three golden gramophones the band was nominated for. The Foos won Best Rock Performance (“Making A Fire”), Best Rock Song (“Waiting On A War”), and Best Rock Album (Medicine At Midnight).

The category included mostly legacy acts, many of which the Foo Fighters rose to fame alongside. The band fought AC/DC (Power Up), Black Pumas (Capitol Cuts—Live From Studio A), Chris Cornell (No One Sings Like You Anymore Vol. 1), and McCartney (McCartney III) for Best Rock Album. It also beat AC/DC (“Shot In The Dark”), Chris Cornell (“Nothing Compares 2 U”), and Deftones (“OHMS”) for Best Rock Performance. And for Best Rock Song, Foo Fighters won over Paul McCartney (“Find My Way”), Kings Of Leon (“The Bandit”), Mammoth WVH (“Distance”), and Weezer (“All My Favorite Songs”).

Obviously, given the tragic week, the last thing the Foo Fighters need is another Grammy, so no, no one from the band was on hand to accept the awards. The group has 12 to date, and 29 nominations in total.

Hawkins was found dead in his hotel room in Bogotá, Colombia on March 25. Since then, the band, which was on a global tour, canceled all upcoming tour dates.

“The Foo Fighters family is devastated by the tragic and untimely loss of our beloved Taylor Hawkins,” Foo Fighters said in a statement. “His musical spirit and infectious laughter will live on with all of us forever. Our hearts go out to his wife, children and family, and we ask that their privacy be treated with the utmost respect in this unimaginably difficult time.”

In addition to a new, Grammy-winning album, the Foo Fighters also recently released their first film Studio 666, a comedy that features guest appearances by the most famous musicians in the world, including fellow Grammy-nominee Paul McCartney.

His death is tragic and heartbreaking. It is upsetting he was so loved and died like a junkie alone in a hotel room. Who helped him score the shit drugs that killed him? Nobody kept an eye on him?  So pointless and preventable.

That’s such a rude thing to say! His cause of death hasn’t even been released yet, but even if it was an overdose, 1. There’s no need to call anyone rude words like junkie and 2. One’s sobriety is nobody’s responsibility but their own.

Is everyone here incapable of reading the news…?https://edition.cnn.com/2022/03/26/entertainment/taylor-hawkins-preliminary-toxicology-screening/index.htmlQuote: “The report said a urine toxicology test was carried out on Hawkins and 10 substances were found, including THC, tricyclic antidepressants, benzodiazepines and opioids.” It doesn’t help that he died in a hotel in Bogotá, Columbia, you know… a place famous for having drug lords and some really sketchy shit. I don’t think it’s nice to say he “died like a junkie alone in a hotel room” but harsh language aside, that is basically the official word on the matter. He was alone in a hotel room with a litany of drugs in his system (this wouldn’t even be the 111th time for such a thing to happen in the culture of the music industry).

I’m going to pretend this isn’t a troll because it’s a good discussion to have.No one is saying Hawkins died like a junky in a hotel room. Hawkins called for help because he was having chest pains. There is no final autopsy yet. What was released was that his heart was not only enlarged, it was twice the weight it should have been. That means Hawkins had heart disease. What was also released was that he had 10 substances in his system – some illicit and some prescriptions such as antidepressants. There was no information on how much if any of these were deadly or trace amounts. So “nobody kept an eye on him”? Hawkins was responsible for keeping an eye on himself. Period. It was nobody’s responsibility to but his. But, let’s say he was addicted to something because he could have been. It’s downright dangerous to everyone involved to put the onus on anyone else but that person else they evade responsibility for their own actions and behavior. I hope you never have someone close to you addicted to drugs and/or alcohol because no amount of behavior control or talking to someone does a darn thing. People who are using or drinking only stop when they are ready to no matter what. It is as simple as that. If you’ve ever tried to have “the talk” with someone to let them know that what they are doing is too much – no person addicted has ever said, “You’re absolutely right” EVER. They just get better at hiding it from you.

My vision of his death is a knee jerk reaction for which I apologize; maybe it went down differently. I was unaware of call for help and was not there and lack remote viewing abilities. I certainly don’t mean to cast blame for lack of supervision, of course he was a grown man who should be able to take care of himself. Buuuuuuut…It is just very sad and preventable no matter how you look at it. If it was medical, he had access to the finest doctors, nutritionists, and personal trainers. I am saddened by this on several levels. My apologies, maybe it did not go down how it looked.  Have to be careful.

“If it was medical, he had access to the finest doctors, nutritionists, and personal trainers.”You do know that people with access to good doctors die too, right?  Death isn’t only for the poor.

There are a lot of things that can cause an enlarged heart.
https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/enlarged-heart/symptoms-causes/syc-20355436I agree that people should wait for the autopsy.

        Truth.

If there is ONE lesson to be learned from Keith Richards’ autobiography it is this: if you are going to be a junkie, make sure that you can afford to get medical-grade smack. It’s why that man is still alive when so many others who have lived like him are not.

      • dudebraa-av says:

LOL he really said that? That’s basically “Let them shoot up cake.” Not every junkie was born with a silver spoon. In fact most junkies cook their herion with a regular stainless steel spoon.

        • iggypoops-av says:

The big issue is that people don’t know the purity of what they are buying – Keith had the money and the connections to know the purity level and that he wasn’t shooting up shit that had been mixed with other unknown substances. He was just trying to answer that question that so many people have asked: “How the fuck is Keith Richards still alive?!?”

      • panthercougar-av says:

Are you my friend Adam? I’ve discussed exactly this with him before. I think with Keith it’s a combination of what you mention and hitting the genetic lottery.

      • electricsheep198-av says:

Yes, because if there’s anything people with addiction are great at, it’s planning ahead and having stable and well-paid careers. Thanks, Keith.

    • sassyabi-av says:

Junkie alone in a hotel room? Please do not make assumptions, these are extremely hurtful words for Taylor fans and loved ones. Heartbroken even more now💔💔

    • SquidEatinDough-av says:

He went out like a rockstar, is it really that upsetting

    • martyfunkhouser1-av says:

Of all people you should know better, Elvis. If that’s even your real name. Disgusting.

  • Robdarudedude-av says:

I feel sad because Taylor was a talented singer as well as drummer and was a front man in his own right with the Coattail Riders, but we’ll never get to see that side of him again.

  • SquidEatinDough-av says:

Remember when rock was cool and dangerous

  • volunteerproofreader-av says:

three, bittersweet GrammysGod damn you to Hell

    • mifrochi-av says:

I like how, of all the subject/object disagreements, incorrect conjugations, and inappropriate apostrophes, the thing that finally broke the Volunteer Proofreader was treating a number as a listed adjective.

    • jomahuan-av says:

for your own sanity, do not read any articles on Consequence (formerly Consequence of Sound).
in their RHCP cover story, there’s a “court” where a “chord” should be.

    • bcfred2-av says:

I have to think this is you, every day, on the AV Club.

    • mifrochi-av says:

Check it out, these dummies misspelled “three, bittersweet Grammy’s.”(Yes, I did reply twice.)

  • electricsheep198-av says:

So what is one to make of the fact that the rock category was mostly legacy acts? Is contemporary rock dead? I don’t listen to any contemporary rock so I cannot answer this myself.

    • cognativedecline-av says:

That’s an excellent question. There is this AWESOME you-tuber named Rick Beato. He’s a musician, producer and all around cool guy. His channel has all kinds of videos dissecting songs (What Makes This Song Great), instructional stuff, and he periodically runs down the top-ten on the charts and talks about them. I think he would agree that contempo rock is done. You should check him out – really entertaining and informing (specially if you’re a musician).

      • electricsheep198-av says:

        Thanks!  Cool.

      • artofwjd-av says:

Yeah, Rick is great. What Makes This Song Great is worth watching even if you aren’t a musician and the pure joy on his face when interviewing people like Brian May is great to see.

    • charliebrownii-av says:

What is one to make of the legacy acts? The Grammys and those responsible for it do not care about the genre at the moment. And there are a number of reasons for that. However, none of them revolve around the idea that an entire genre of music is dead.

      • electricsheep198-av says:

That’s fair.  The Grammys aren’t always known for recognizing the actual best in a genre.  Not that I doubt Foo Fighters created an exceptional album.

    • bcfred2-av says:

I’m not sure what to call it other than laziness on the part of the Academy. The rockists are all old at this point and hip hop and pop are the dominant genres. But I listen to XM in the car and there are all kinds of exciting rock acts out there right now (some of which have been at it for a while so they’re hardly unknown), so I’m really at a loss to understand how that is the roster of nominees they came up with.

    • notarealhuman-av says:

Rock died soon after the Lone Rangers broke into a radio station to get their demo reel played!

    • dwarfandpliers-av says:

my sentiments exactly. Eddie Van Halen’s kid’s mediocre band? an 80-year old musician (albeit one of the greatest of all time)? Weezer and AC/DC, both of whom are well past their sell-by date?  Chris Cornell, who died 2 years ago?  Wow that’s not good.

  • twenty0nepart3-av says:

I’m missing how Chris Cornell, a man who has been dead in the ground for almost 5 years, was nominated for best performance. Did they Weekend at Bernie’s him?

  • dwarfandpliers-av says:

for Best Rock Song, Foo Fighters won over Paul McCartney (“Find My Way”), Kings Of Leon (“The Bandit”), Mammoth WVH (“Distance”), and Weezer (“All My Favorite Songs”) if this is “the best”, wow, rock music is in BAD shape.

  • el-zilcho1981-av says:

The Foo Fighters song is called “My Hero.”

  • MannyCalavera-av says:

McCartney was not in Studio 666The song is called “My Hero”I’m sure there’s more
