It’s been a long time since we’ve seen newly resurgent comedian Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) or her writing partner, Ava Daniels (Hanna Einbinder), and it’s been almost as long since the two have seen each other. When we last checked in on the duo in Hacksseason two finale, Deborah had fired her younger counterpart so she could forge her own path, while her own special, My Bad, was causing a bidding war amongst hungry networks.

Season three picks up one year later, while Deborah contends with the newfound heights of her success and Ava confronts their separation. But these two were never meant to stay away from each other for long. In the season’s new trailer, Ava runs into Jimmy (Paul W. Downs) at a bar, who reveals that Deborah is not only in the building, but has hired new writers to replace her. “I’m not ready to see her,” Ava responds, before immediately running into her former boss in an elevator.

As the two re-chart their relationship, they’ll also be faced with new love, new cast members—we finally get our first glimpse of Succession’s J. Smith-Cameron away from the Waystar boardroom—and new hobbies. Namely, pickleball, which feels long overdue for a withering HBO treatment.

There will also be some big surprises along the way. At the seasons’ SXSW premiere last month, series creator Lucia Aniello called the season three finale her “favorite episode of this series so far,” adding (via Variety), “I really feel that we built the relationship to a place where it can’t stay the way it ends in Season 3. I’m very excited. Even thinking about it makes me freak out.” Jean Smart also teased that “the ending is totally unexpected. Totally.”

You can see for yourself during the season’s two-episode premiere on May 2. The show will air two episodes each week after that, concluding with the season finale on May 30.

Jean Smart is one of the best actors working today. Between Hacks and Mare of Easttown, not to mention her Fargo series, I will tune in for anything she is in.
