2023 was a big year for SAG-AFTRA. The 119,000-strong actors guild spent a whopping 118 days on the picket line this past summer and fall, fighting for a historic contract that was finally approved this past November. While the work is far from over, at least the guild gets to sit back, pop some champagne, and celebrate at the annual SAG awards, which stream live on Netflix February 24 and 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

Unlike the Oscars and Golden Globes, which include categories like Best Director, Best Original Song, and more, the SAG awards exclusively honor acting achievement in film and television. In the film category, this year’s nominations mirror what we will likely see when Oscar nominations are announced later this month. Oppenheimer, Barbie and Killers Of The Flower Moon all picked up nods for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, while Golden Globe winners Lily Gladstone, Emma Stone, Robert Downey Jr., and Cillian Murphy were all nominated in the individual categories.

In the television category, The Bear and Succession scored big with a nominations for Outstanding Ensemble and individual nods for Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin, Matthew McFadyen, and Sarah Snook. Other notable nominees include Rachel Brosnahan for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Pedro Pascal for The Last Of Us, and Elizabeth Debicki for The Crown.

Two immediate reactions:I’m so glad to see Leo not in the Lead Actor category. Sorry, but that was the worst performance of his career“Barbie” nominated for Stunts over “Iron Claw”?????????

  • drpumernickelesq-av says:

I’m genuinely surprised The Holdovers didn’t get a nomination for outstanding cast. Two of the three leads are among the favorites to win Oscars, and the third main cast member could easily sneak into the supporting actor category. That’s not mentioning the other cast members, who were all pretty great as well.

    • 40subscriptionstovibe-av says:

This whole list is off, but only 5 per category probably causes this weirdness

    • gesundheitall-av says:

I wonder if it essentially being a three-hander for much of the meat of it made them lean toward larger ensembles — the other nominees are pretty huge casts

    • trevceratops-av says:

Agreed, I’m surprised to see The Color Purple nominated over both The Holdovers and Poor Things. Would also have liked to see Zac Efron sneak in (maybe over Bradley Cooper?), but I know that was a longshot.

  • 40subscriptionstovibe-av says:

    Where TF is Juno Temple?

    • gesundheitall-av says:

Still eligible for this role next year, thankfully. My guess is she’ll submit last week’s episode.

      • 40subscriptionstovibe-av says:

Is that possible, though? The current season is getting nominations now, which also is ridiculous considering it’s still airing.

        • gesundheitall-av says:

That’s because the cutoff was 12/31, so anything they submitted was from the portion of the season that aired in 2023. Anything that’s aired in 2024 will only be eligible next year

  • wangfat-av says:

Im glad they give out awards for stunt people since the Oscars refuse to

  • ryanlohner-av says:

I can only assume this was written before SAG’s announcement that they were fucking everyone over and letting AI take their jobs anyway.

    • cooler95-av says:

Fran Drescher has generally not been a really good Guild boss. I cannot imagine fumbling this bad after the amount of support she got last year.

  • pie-oh-pah-av says:

I don’t get particularly invested in awards anymore, but I will say that while The Morning Show sucked, Billy Crudup was outstanding in it this year. And I’ve been preaching about both Bel Powley and Lily Gladstone to any and everyone who would listen for years now so it’s nice to see them both finally getting the recognition they deserve.

    • marty--funkhouser-av says:

He’s been good every season. This season was light years better than S2. It was billed as prestige drama at the height of peak tv, but it’s just soapy and only sorta fun.

    • tigrillo-av says:

Why Cruddup didn’t get an Oscar nomination for Almost Famous is mind-boggling to me.

  • marty--funkhouser-av says:

Who is this Jennifer Anniston mentioned in the list? Heck, I even watched TMS!

  • rigbyriordan-av says:

Brie Larson, A Lesson In ChemistryYou mean Lessons in Chemistry?

  • cyrils-cashmere-sweater-vest-av says:

I’m really surprised The Diplomat is getting so many nominations. I mean, I watched it and was moderately entertained but I wasn’t thinking at the time it was award worthy.
