Sometimes, you just want to know who’s hosting SNL this week. Other times, you want to know who hosted the show two weeks ago. If that information is available, you’ll find it here, on the A.V. Club’s own list of Saturday Night Live hosts and musical guests for season 49.

Now, before we go any further, despite the writers of The A.V. Club being among the most powerful and incisive minds the internet has to offer, we cannot see into the future. So abandon all hope ye who enter here because you won’t find anything that hasn’t been reported elsewhere. This is simply a list of every announced host and musical guest from the 2023–24 season and nothing more. If that isn’t what you’re looking for, please, consider clicking this link to view all our wonderful SNL coverage, which is quite robust and insightful.

In the meantime, since the season recently started, picking up a few weeks late due to the WGA strike, the list is currently woefully underpopulated. It might leave the less discerning reader wondering if the show has been canceled. Fear not, Saturday Night Live is still an active production. Long story short: The show’s publicists have yet to take photographs of those iconic colorful index cards. And, as we find out new hosts and musical guests, we’ll be sure to add them and that is our promise to you. Now a note to the reader, this list is going to read very dry, so please, we encourage impressions of late SNL announcer Don Pardo either aloud or quietly to liven things up a little bit.

My fellow Bargatziacs, where you at?

    • legospaceman-av says:

How about Dave Grohl doing David F Pumpkins along with Tom Hanks?

    • bdavis36-av says:

Seems unlikely, given the ongoing strike. I believe he’s technically allowed to appear as SNL falls under a different agreement that isn’t affected, as long as he isn’t promoting anything (which is why Davidson, BB, and Bargatze are the first guests this season, with the latter two not being SAG members at all). However, I would personally still consider that crossing the picket line and he probably feels the same.

Is Pete Davidson just three kids in that tracksuit standing on each other’s shoulders?

  • chandlerbinge-av says:

Missed opportunity, this could have been a slideshow.

Nate Bargatze is so funny, and a hometown guy. I’m excited for him to get to do this!  And super exciting for him to get such a big-name musical guest.  I’m curious to see how he does in sketch comedy–it doesn’t seem to fit with his delivery style–but the monologue will be funny. Also, hey thanks for this literally one new piece of information, AVClub. :/Anyway can someone answer this. I asked on the recap of last week’s episode. If the SAG strike is still going on, how was Pete able to promote Bupkis last week?

    • kickpuncherpunchkicker-av says:

Did he? I’ll admit, I didn’t watch every single skit, but from what I saw, the only thing I saw referencing Bupkis was in the “I’m Just Pete” where there’s multiple jabs about it not getting big numbers. I wouldn’t call that promoting, but that may just be semantics.

      • electricsheep198-av says:

Well that’s what I don’t know: what counts as promoting?  Did that count as promoting, or is it okay if you’re making fun of it?  There was also a Bupkis commercial during one of the breaks. I’m not accusing him of anything.  I’m just trying to understand the rules.  It seems with the hosts that have been announced they’re staying away from actors so far so there seems to be some trepidation there.

        • kickpuncherpunchkicker-av says:

I’ll admit, I can’t speak for what the SAG folks say, but considering it was referenced as a joke, I wouldn’t count that as promoting, because it wasn’t referenced as “Hey, go watch my show!” With regards to the Bupkis commercial, it’s a Peacock original, so it makes sense for NBC to promote it when the star is on SNL, and unless it was a brand new commercial where Pete’s going “Hey, I’m here at 30 Rock hosting SNL, watch Bupkis on Peacock”, that’s not Pete breaking any rules of SAG, that’s just NBC promoting a product.

          • electricsheep198-av says:

Fair enough.  I haven’t heard any calls for his head from SAG-AFTRA so I guess it’s fine!

        • kickpuncherpunchkicker-av says:

The biggest indicator I would say that he was within the legal bounds of “not outwardly promoting it” is the fact that (as far as I can see) nobody’s bringing it up. You can’t tell me that if SAG members thought Pete Davidson was shilling out during the strike, that they wouldn’t have lost their mind and we would be seeing think pieces across the internet about “Pete Davidson is a strike breaker, why you should stop watching his products if you support SAG”.If there are people saying this, I’d be intrigued to read their thoughts, but it doesn’t appear to be happening.

          • electricsheep198-av says:

For sure, yeah I haven’t heard anything so I’m sure it’s fine. I never thought it was not fine, really. I assumed it must be fine because I can’t imagine SNL risking having actors boycott it long-term for their allowing the breaking of rules. I was just more curious than anything about the finer points of the rules. Likewise I’m assuming sketch comedy doesn’t count somehow as acting under the rules either.

          • bdavis36-av says:

SNL is under a Network Code Agreement that is exempt from the strike. This also covers things like news, reality/game shows, variety shows, soaps, sporting events, etc. Personally, I feel like it’s still crossing the picket line, but others apparently don’t. However, this is most likely why the next two hosts are not SAG members. We’ll probably see that trend continue throughout the season until the strike ends.

          • electricsheep198-av says:

Thanks!  Yeah that makes sense.  It seems like a tightrope for sure.

          • jmyoung123-av says:

I mean I believe any SAG member can host, they just cannot promote any projects they are in or have upcoming. I would say making jokes about the lack of interest in a work that was released months ago does not count.

        • gargsy-av says:

“Well that’s what I don’t know: what counts as promoting?”
How about this handy rule of thumb: promoting is promoting. Mentioning is not promoting. Making fun of is not promoting.

  • bassplayerconvention-av says:

    Without further adieuCome on, really?

    • TeoFabulous-av says:

Having seen what the AV Club has become over the past few years, I’d have to answer, sadly, “Yes, really.”

    • amessagetorudy-av says:

Seriously. Putting up a show that’s already happened and then only listing two more does not warrant any “adieu.”

      • bs-leblanc-av says:

Putting up a show that’s already happened is probably a step up from the summary panel they used to have in the SNL reviews as recently as a year ago. It listed the cast from ~2010.

This article really should have been a slide show.

  • movienut-av says:

Timothy Chalamet is hosting this Saturday

  • jbheinous-av says:

The best part of the slideshows now is that AV just goes to imdb for ranking actors, movies etc, opposed to, well, having to think about anything.

    Ugh.
Really thought this was gonna be my year.

So you guys updated and re-posted this old article, yet failed to include the host for this Saturday Nov. 11 (which will be Timothee Chalamet). Nice work!
