Some people may feel some exasperation that Hugh Jackman didn’t close his Wolverine chapter with the Oscar-nominated Logan, but Jackman himself regretted announcing his retirement before Logan even began filming. In a new interview with Variety, the actor pinpoints the moment he realized he made a mistake.

“I went to a screening of Deadpool [in 2016]. I was 20 minutes in, and I was like, ‘Ah, damn it!’ All I kept seeing in my head was 48 Hrs. with Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy. So it’s been brewing for a long time,” he admits of his decision, years later, to un-retire. “It just took me longer to get here.”

Ryan Reynolds, Jackman’s co-star in Deadpool’s first outing (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) and the upcoming Deadpool 3, has been discussing the possibility with MCU boss Kevin Feige since Disney first acquired Fox. “It wasn’t possible then,” says Reynolds. “For this to be happening now is pretty damn exciting.”

Following his conversation with Feige, Reynolds apparently hounded Jackman “on the daily” to star in Deadpool. “I think, actually, he’d given up,” Jackman recalls of when he finally relented. “I think it was a big shock to him. There was a massive pause, and then he said, ‘I can’t believe the timing of this.’”

Reynolds immediately took the news into his next meeting with Feige, and the rest is history in the making. As for returning to the role he once retired, Jackman reflects, “A little part of me now thinks I’d be better at it,” once again wounding Logan fans everywhere. He continues, “Is that arrogance of age or something? Wolverine’s a tortured character—more tortured than me. But I always get the feeling of him being comfortable in his own skin. And I feel more comfortable in my own skin now, even though it’s messier.”

Wolverine and Deadpool team up is too good to pass up based upon a retirement statement from years before.  People unretire in sports and entertainment all the time it’s fine

Well it’s not even a real ‘retirement’ he retired from playing Wolverine. He didn’t retire as an actor. If anything him even stating he’s retiring from Wolverine is just a token nod to the superhero community that he didn’t really need to at all give his audience. That anyone should give him a hard time about this is next to bewildering. He just said a thing and now it’s years later, so what.

You know, Hugh, other people are allowed to play Wolverine too.

this is cute PR, but i genuinely don’t believe it for one second. i think they went ‘hey we’ll give you 50 million dollars to do this’ and he said ‘cool man’

Despite being an overall creative failure, X-Men: Origins, the opening montage and elements of the film like Liev Schreiber, Ryan Reynolds’s Wade Wilson did actually work and probably was part of what ultimately helped get Deadpool made (plus a big push from some leaked test footage from … uh … sources unknown).

Yeah, I never got onto the whole hate wagon for that movie. It wasn’t great but there were some fun set pieces and the opening, I thought, was brilliant. I didn’t know anything about Deadpool then, so I didn’t have an opinion on that movie’s version.  Actually, now I kinda want to rewatch it….

It’s a fun enough mediocre comic book thing. The best version is the one that leaked with unfinished effects and temp music.

I’ve always hated the fact that they didn’t make a movie about Wolverine and Sabertooth fighting through each war and instead gave us… whatever Origins was supposed to be.

For me Origins is trying to tell three different Wolverine stories at once:His originHis wilderness years
        Then Weapon X stuff

They should have split out those elements into three films, ultimately the films got better as they went on. The Wolverine is pretty good until we get ‘Transformer Silver Samurai’ and Logan is near perfect.

How does Giselle feel about this?

If they can match the vibe there, I might cry with joy…… also, Wolvie should wear a comics-accurate costume with cowl. Just saying.

Didn’t he give up the role in the first place because he
got fed up with the training and getting SWOLE? (And probably preferred
not to take the special actor medication that hastens this process)In
which case, I don’t think Hugh Jackman needs to be this absolute
monster to play a good Wolverine. I’d be fine with a little skinny Wolverine.
