Happy Valentine’s Day from us here at The A.V. Club. In celebration of this day of love, here’s the first teaser for the psychological erotic thriller Deep Water, which dives into the twisted mind games of one married couple played by now-real-life-exes Ana de Armas and Ben Affleck.

Based on the novel by Patricia Highsmith (The Talented Mr. Ripley), Deep Water takes us “inside the marriage of picture-perfect Vic (Affleck) and Melinda (de Armas) Van Allen to discover the dangerous mind games they play and what happens to the people that get caught up in them.” In the teaser, a romantic picnic turns into a confessional as the two admit something’s wrong with both of them while Vic appears to finger Melinda under a tree.

The film marks the return of director Adrian Lyne, known for fellow erotic thrillers on Fatal Attraction, Indecent Proposal, and Unfaithful. Sam Levinson, the mind behind HBO’s hit teen drama series Euphoria, co-wrote the screenplay with Zach Helm (Stranger Than Fiction).

Deep Water stars Affleck and de Armas, as well as Tracy Letts (Ford V Ferrari), Lil Rel Howery (Free Guy), Dash Mihok (Ray Donovan), Finn Wittrock (American Horror Story), Kristen Connolly (Evil), Jacob Elordi (Euphoria), Rachel Blanchard, Michael Braun, Jade Fernandez, Grace Jenkins, Brendan C. Miller, Devyn Tyler, and Jeff Pope.

After worries that the film was never going to see the light of day, Deep Water will now debut exclusively on Hulu on March 18. Though going straight to streamer feels a little bit like the outdated “straight to video” there was concern that the film would not be seen at all after Disney took it off its release calendar in December. Originally slated for a January 14 theatrical release, the film has had little news or promotion until now.

If you told me that was Mila Kunis in the header, I wouldn’t have thought twice about it.Once it panned to Ben Aflec I assumed he was going to parade an animal cracker over her body.

  • redwolfmo-av says:

Erotic thriller with Ana de Armas?  sign me up.  hopefully it chronicles her journey from Milan to Minsk

Vic ‘n Melinda, underneath a tree,
    F-I-N-G-E-R-I-N-G
    (doesn’t really work, does it?)

Erotic thriller starring Ana de Armis with high-profile director and writers: Interest piqued. Pulled from release, co-starring Affleck and relegated to direct to streaming: Interest unpiqued.

  • 4jimstock-av says:

Holy Gigli, Batman that looks terrible.

  • Blanksheet-av says:

I thought we were well past thinking that going direct to streaming was like a demotion of quality and comparable to “direct to video.” A lot of good movies premiere on streaming. I mean if they’re good enough for star-studded, buzzy TV shows ( how much entertainment media and criticism covers network vs. streaming shows?), then why not movies?I like this teaser because it doesn’t give away the plot like most do.

    • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

i mean, it might not mean it’s a bad movie but it is a demotion.

      • TRT-X-av says:

i mean, it might not mean it’s a bad movie but it is a demotion.
        2020-21 taught us otherwise.

      • the-notorious-joe-av says:

But maybe the breakup was incredibly acrimonious and they refuse to do press together? This could be the only option to get the movie out without a media tour involving two people who (may) hate each other.

        • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

idk most of that stuff still seems to be done over zoom. also like, if it’s in your contract to do a press tour you have to suck it up and do it.also also i can almost guarantee they’ll still be doing press for this when it’s about to hit streaming.

    • snagglepluss-av says:

The best parts of the movie will be in PornHub anyways so what does it matter?

    • it-has-a-super-flavor--it-is-super-calming-av says:

Old ways of thinking dies hard. If it doesn’t get an exclusive cinema release, then it’s just not… exclusive, or some other such rubbish.
I’m sure there are still people who think being a movie actor makes you a better actor than a TV actor. It’s all rubbish.

      • cosmicghostrider-av says:

While not all movies are “Hollywood movies” (example: student made movies), Hollywood film actors are certainly more successful (and probably more capable) then daytime soap TV actors. That’s just factual.

    • drkschtz-av says:

“A lot of good movies premiere on streaming”do they?

      • racj1982-av says:

Yes, they do. A. How many of them do you actually watch?B. I’m wondering why people fail to realize that there are far more meh to trash movies released every year. Period. Jump back a few years and most of these movies would have dropped in theaters anyway. Not because they were great. Where else were they going to go?

        • drkschtz-av says:

I see what you’re saying. Although to B., surely the existence of these new form of studios and partner studios (streaming), is creating movies for streaming that wouldn’t have existed before. The accountants are looking at a new era of budgets and revenues and it’s changing the movie landscape.

      • kinjacaffeinespider-av says:

And so does a lot of other crap.

    • jbbb3-av says:

I think it’s a little different when a movie like this was scheduled to go to theaters and gets shipped off to streaming as opposed to Power of the Dog or Don’t Look Up that were always going straight to Netflix.

      • noah1991-av says:

I think it’s slightly different, given the environment we’re in. Disney probably looked at the fact that next to no movies aimed at older adults were making money at the box office (even buzzy Oscar titles like West Side Story) so the likelihood of an expensive, hard-R erotic thriller making a big splash at the box office was slim to none.

    • cosmicghostrider-av says:

You should check out the Dr. Strange superbowl trailer. That one doesn’t give away the film at all. jk jk.

  • bagman818-av says:

“How come you’re the only man that wants to stay with me?” says Ana de Armas, of all people.
I submit that she must not be looking very hard.

  • brianth-av says:

So she does clear half his age plus seven, but just barely.

  • lisarowe-av says:

what are your fingers doing there pal? it doesn’t look like they’re doing what they should be doing because she’s -_-
Originally slated for a January 14 theatrical release, the film has had little news or promotion until now.because the movie was so bad and unfixable. it was poorly reviewed at test screenings so straight to stream.

  • russell0barth-av says:

“I dunno, man… she is like 16 years his junior. Maybe she is a bit old for him, yeah?” – Hollywood

  • snagglepluss-av says:

Will there be sexy, sexy saxophones on the soundtrack? You can’t do erotic thrillers without one

  • dancalling-av says:

Ana de Armas is in the trailer, but is she in the movie? No way I’m getting burned on that again.

  • plateialumitar-av says:

“Why are you the only man who wants to stay with me?”

Bwahahaha! Yeah, ok, movie. Super believable line you got there coming from freakin Ana de Armas. This is gonna be crap, isn’t it?

    • kencerveny-av says:

About as believable as Rachael Leigh Cook being portrayed as an undateable, Plain-Jane outsider just because she wore glasses and tastefully paint spattered overalls in She’s All That.

    • hasselt-av says:

Maybe its one of those movies where she wears blocky glasses and has her hair in a bun…then, she takes off the glasses and lets the hair down, and, wow, she’s secretly gorgeous!

  • mykinjaa-av says:

    Gigli 2

  • interlinked-av says:

Man, I hope they use real sharks and not CGI in this one.

  • mykinjaa-av says:

Haven’t seen this much thirst trappin’ since J Lo introduced regular ass to Americans and a video game vampire wore a big hat. Corn Country must have slim pickins. LOL!

  • thenuclearhamster-av says:

After Yesterday’s bait and switch I’ll believe it when I see it.

  • kbroxmysox2-av says:

Am I the only who thought Ana de Armas was the best part of Knives Out? I don’t mean this as “damn she’s so hot, I can look at her all day”(I’m gay) but I thought she gave the best performance and really did a great job with it? And that I’m bummed she won’t be in Knives Out 2?

    • brianfowler713-av says:

Haven’t seen it yet, but I thought that was the general consensus from everyone that did.

    • bigal6ft6-av says:
    • thhg-av says:

She was the best part because the script and direction built her up as the film’s beacon of morality and kindness, and made everyone (including the audience) forget that it doesn’t mean she’s automatically a naïve moron. Her acting supported that point very well.

      • kbroxmysox2-av says:

Oh yeah I’m not saying the other actors were weaker than her, or weak at all, just that I thought she was the heart and soul of the movie, so it’s weird to think of a sequel without. Will the sequel just have another ‘beacon of morality and kindness’ because I can’t really imagine the movie just centering on Blanc

    • roboj-av says:

She was also great in Bond and Blade Runner too. She’s actually a good actress with a lot of potential who just also happens to be very very good looking.

  • growingoldinsuburbia-av says:

I’m laughing at the timing of this. JLo has been appearing on every talk show to hype her movie Marry Me and tell everyone how, this time around, it’s TWOO WUV between her and Ben. And bam! Hulu drops a teaser showing Ben and his ex all horny for each other. On Valentine’s Day! JLo’s gotta’ be pissed.

  • volunteerproofreader-av says:

    I miss erotic thrillers

  • thai-ribs-av says:

I swear to Christ, if this movie doesn’t have what I consider to be the appropriate amount of Ana de Armas, Hulu better lawyer up.‘Cause me and my incel buddies are gonna come gunning for their asses…

  • deselby-av says:

I always thought one benefit of the mainstreaming of porn was the death of the “erotic thriller”.

    • nilus-av says:

It killed the soft core porn movie disguised as an erotic thriller for sure Kids these days don’t appreciate having to wait for their parents to go to bed to watch a terrible detective movie on Cinemax just to see a minute of tastefully film thrusting without a hint of genitalia. If you were lucky instead of that you got a movie who’s whole premise was that a failing business could be revived by adding girls in bikinis to it. The chances of tasteful thrusting were lower but you were guaranteed  at least a half hour of bare breasts

      • hasselt-av says:

Kids these days will never know what it once meant to “watch an unscrambled movie”.

      • junwello-av says:

I just watched this teaser and what I learned is that they’re married, in love, and each of them feels there’s something wrong with them. That describes every healthy marriage ever.  Plot?

      • snooder87-av says:

God i miss those skinemax flicks.Try to go and find them now. Utterly impossible. I made the mistake of renting a classic one from Amazon and they edited out the sex. Like WTF? And that was the only movie in that particular actress’s back catalogue that was even available on streaming. The rest were all “sold out” or “out of stock” DVDs at $50 a pop. It’s a damn shame is what it is.

    • unfromcool-av says:

Erotic thrillers are actually sexy, though. Porn is rarely, if ever, sexy.

  • tinyepics-av says:

Streaming platforms use of the word “Original” is really messing with the words meaning.

    • donboy2-av says:

I love how it’s spread to broadcast.  “A CBS original series” — you mean, a TV show?  Apparently NBC is doing this now too.
