Just a day after Warner Bros. once again demanded that everyone stop rolling their eyes and snickering when it says that it’s really and truly not going to keep releasing all of its movies on HBO Max on the same day they come out in movie theaters, the studio has actually made a surprising shift: DC superhero movie Blue Beetle is actually losing its HBO Max release in favor of a traditional theatrical rollout. It’s getting called up to the big-screen big leagues!

Blue Beetle is being directed by Angel Manuel Soto and will star Cobra Kai’s Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes, a regular kid who finds a beetle-like alien artifact that bonds with him, Venom-style, and gives him a vaguely beetle-like suit of alien armor. Also the armor is blue and Blue Beetle was the name of an old comic book hero owned by a company that DC eventually bought, so Jaime Reyes becomes the Blue Beetle.

DC and Warner Bros. have been trying to crack a Blue Beetle movie for years, with the project first being announced in 2018 before Soto signed on earlier this year. Rather than going straight to HBO Max, Blue Beetle will now open in theaters on August 18, 2023. Meanwhile, the HBO Max Batgirl movie with Leslie Grace from In The Heights is apparently still going to land on HBO Max.

That one is being directed by Bad Boys For Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, who previously made one of the biggest films of last year (with an asterisk, because movie theaters shut down shortly after it came out), so maybe they could make a few phone calls and get Batgirl in theaters as well. Then maybe Christopher Nolan will come back to Warner and everyone can be friends again.

Am I the only one who keeps misreading his name “Yolo Maridueña”?

I think this is great character to adapt to the screen. He’s DC’s answer to Spider-Man— something they clearly want — much more than Barry Allen imo. I also think he has a cooler tech power set and arch adversaries than Cyborg. The practical challenge is he’s not as well known as those characters or even Batgirl. Even Into the Spider-verse was only ok at the box office. Still, Blue Beetles powers require a cinema budget for live action. So my question is what is DC going to do to give this movie the best chance at the box office?I have two guesses. Obviously the character is connected to the original Blue Beetle and Booster Gold, so high quality casting of those roles could be a strategy. Also, since BB’s powers and main villains are alien in origin, Green Lanterns become a viable option too.Of course, DC’s ambitions may be smaller for this movie but if so, what is the rationale for choosing this project as a break from the direct to streaming model.

Do know understand why this idiot keeps yammering on about Warner Bros., when currently right now, many major studios are not doing day and date releases? Warner Bros. is getting shit on for being more cautious than others during 2021? I really don’t get it.Make sure to check out Spider Man in theaters.

Gaining Dennis Villeneuve and ditching Christopher Nolan is the best thing that happen to WB

Coincidentally Jaime Reyes’ Blue Beetle comics had Peacemaker in its supporting cast as a kind of mentor figure. Doubt that he’ll make an appearance considering how extra violent the Suicide Squad version is compared to his appearance in the comics, but it feels like something that could have been.

I’d rather a Ted Kord Blue & Gold film, but this’ll do I suppose.

What is going on with his hat in that picture? It is somehow both backwards and forwards at the same time? Is this one of the Blue Beetle’s powers?

I’d like to see Peter Jackson get involved. Blue Beatle, get it?

This’ll be interesting. The way Blue Beetle has been portrayed in Young Justice (especially Season 2) was fun and entertaining, and I hope they follow that approach.
