For 15 seasons, It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia has remained a consistently fresh satire of American society. Thankfully, if the trailer for the show’s “record-extending” season 16 is any indication, It’s Always Sunny hasn’t missed a beat. It’s still Sunny In Philadelphia, and Mac, Charlie, Dee, Dennis, and Frank are still finding new rock bottoms to hit.

After nearly two decades on the air, creators and stars Rob McElhenney and Glenn Howerton, with the help of their cast Charlie Day, Kaitlin Olson, and Danny Devito, have consistently found new wrinkles in their characters. For example, who knew that Charlie had a toilet in his apartment? Frank’s been pissing in cans for like 14 years at this point. That’s the type of creativity that keeps the show going.

But the second most surprising thing in the new trailer is the brief Breaking Bad reunion. In one moment, about a minute into the spot, Charlie takes on the common Sunny vocation of limo driver for Breaking Bad stars Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston. Unfortunately for them, it might smell a little funky in the car because Charlie vomited in there earlier.

In season 16, the Gang™ promises to take on “inflation, U.S.-Russian relations, mental health, gender equality, injury liability, gun control, and celebrity-branded products.” But, of course, we assume they will attack each topic with sensitivity, compassion, and a level of thoughtfulness we’ve come to expect from Philadelphia’s worst bartenders. One can turn to the Gang’s understanding of inflation and feminine hygiene in the trailer for proof.

Season 16 of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia starts with two new episodes on June 7 at 10 p.m. EST on FXX and the next day on Hulu.

Can’t wait for Mary Lynn Rajskub’s return as Gail the Snail.

    • blpppt-av says:

What do you expect when you suddenly close CTU?

      • nogelego-av says:

Suddenly? That place was blown up and regularly infiltrated by moles on an annual basis. And half of the people in charge at CTU either ended up becoming terrorists themselves or were murdered by other employees. They had one decent agent, and even he refused to follow orders and regularly caused some serious security breaches. CTU was a shitshow and absolutely more of a threat to national security than a benefit.

        • blpppt-av says:

Chloe O’Brien was a pretty darned good employee too.

        • westsiiiiide-av says:

That’s what always made me laugh about The Killing as well, when people would describe them as ace detectives. Those two got everything wrong, multiple times, and destroyed many, many lives by either accusing the wrong person or letting the guilty walk free.

    • gruesome-twosome-av says:

And Artemis is back, too, and it looks like she and Gail will be in some scenes together. Surely pure chaos with those two, can’t wait.

“In season 16, the Gang™ promises to take on “inflation, U.S.-Russian relations, mental health, gender equality, injury liability, gun control, and celebrity-branded products.””“So then I started blasting…..again.”

    Beardless Mac looks weird, dude.

    • nogelego-av says:

Are you sure it isn’t the dental implants and plastic surgery that’s throwing you off? Three of the five main cast members are starting to look like mid-2000s Meg Ryan. I mean, at the very least they could overdo it for Mac and make it a joke.

      • cjgoon33-av says:

I mean the show started when they were all in their mid to late 20’s and now main 4 are closer to 50 than they are 40. Heck, saying that out loud is nuts thinking about how long this show has been on for.

      • mortimercommafamousthe-av says:

That is the joke. Rob wouldn’t get veneers if it wasn’t in service of a joke.

Glenn Howerton looks like he’s wearing a wig. He partially shaved his head for the Blackberry movie. It was starting to grow out during the podcasts earlier this year and they have been filming Sunny since then.

Oh did he actually shave for that? I assumed it was a cap.

          • cyrils-cashmere-sweater-vest-av says:

The Always Sunny podcast is on YouTube. This picture is of Glenn calling in from on location of the movie. It was either during filming or just before when they were working out his “look”. I’m not a hair and makeup artist but I assume he shaved the top of his head and then they covered that with a bald cap.edit: Podcast episodes after the movie shoot show him completely buzzed to even out the half bald look. It’s possible there was enough time between the end of the movie shoot and the start of Sunny filming for him to regrow a full head of hair but something about the way it’s styled in the trailer looks unusual for Dennis.

Interesting. Not that it really matters, I just happened to see the BlackBerry trailer the other night and Bald Dennis startled me haha

    • platypus222-av says:

I feel like since I started watching him in Mythic Quest (in which his character goes from long, pronounced beard to no beard) I’m just used to whatever he’s got. Also the podcast.

  • pizzapartymadness-av says:

They’ll also be addressing the fact that Charlie mentions having a sister in season 1, but she is never mentioned or addressed ever again. Apparently, there’s an episode in which he deals with his sisters (twins).

    • badkuchikopi-av says:

Oh awesome! I believe they’d said on the DVD commentary or podcast that they just retconned that and decided he was an only child. Glad they reversed course.

    • mortimercommafamousthe-av says:

I hope they survived an abortion attempt like Charlie.

    • platypus222-av says:

Oh, is that what it is? On the podcast they mentioned that they would be addressing an unseen character only mentioned in the first season that the fans had been asking about, but I didn’t know who they meant. All I could think about was the gym teacher who may or may not have molested Charlie.

      • pizzapartymadness-av says:

I forget where I saw it, but there was a blurb posted somewhere about some of the plotlines for the season and that was one of them. Another, iirc, was Mac having a long distance relationship.

  • nogelego-av says:

So is this going to be better than the Ireland season? I checked out and said never again with that one. It’s like they all have other projects and soccer teams and they aren’t “hungry” anymore. It’s the same with South Park – once you become a multi-billionaire, you really don’t have to try.

    • badkuchikopi-av says:

I thought the last one was an improvement over the one before. It’s definitely lost something though. The podcast is a lot more fun.

    • stevennorwood-av says:

I’m wheeze-laughing at “Grandpa Moistener”…thank you sir. Take a star.

    • boomerpetway-av says:

The covid Dennis and poop soup made season 15 worth it.

    • platypus222-av says:

I liked the Ireland episodes, but it definitely felt like a way to get FX to pay them to take an Ireland vacation with their families. And the roller rink flashback episode earlier in the season was pure gold. One difference, I think, is that they started the It’s Always Sunny Podcast after season 15 and it looks like rewatching the older episodes for that may have gotten them back in touch with some of the humor from the older seasons as well.

    • westsiiiiide-av says:

Ireland was … not good. Just very earnest and not trying hard.

  • scortius-av says:

“Has this show lost it’s way?”

  • gruesome-twosome-av says:

Cranston and Paul is not a Breaking Bad reunion to the gang – it’s “Malcolm in the Middle” dad and someone they think is grown-up Malcolm, lol

  • drips-av says:

The McPoyles are back! That’s all I care about!

    • cjgoon33-av says:

My favorite side characters!  They have not been on in a while…the Thanksgiving “Bury the Beef” episode was the last one and that had to be 7+ years ago.

  • evt2-av says:

Why is it that Danny Devito is the only one that doesn’t look like he’s aged since the beginning of the show?

  • nycpaul-av says:

Was there no way for you guys to turn this into a story about “Succession?!”

  • 0vvorldisabombaclaart0-av says:

I’m pretty behind on this show, but when I do catch it it’s still pretty damn good. . .which is shocking for being on this long.

  • rob1984-av says:

Kind of shocked he couldn’t get Ryan Reynolds into this new season.

    • platypus222-av says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if they did, but there’s no way they’d spoil that in a trailer.
