Though it feels like it happened five years ago at this point, it was really only last month that Gal Gadot and a bunch of her celebrity friends attracted the ire of social media users around the globe for their (sometimes literally) tone-deaf rendition of John Lennon’s “Imagine.” Now, even though it would be understandable to assume most people have already forgotten about the well-intentioned viral cringe-fest, Fifty Shades Of Grey actor Jamie Dornan has come out of the woodwork to make it perfectly clear that it was not his idea and it’s actually all Kristen Wiig’s fault he was involved in the first place.

“I was like, yeah, fine. Whatever…Seems like a lovely thing to do,” Dornan said in a recent interview on the Tea With Me podcast, describing how his friend Kristen Wiig called him up explaining Gadot’s idea for the video. After filming a couple seconds of himself singing in the bathroom of his house, Dornan sent it off to Wiig without a second thought. “Whatever happens, happens,” he said.

It wasn’t until days later that the Fifty Shades star received an apology text from Wiig saying, “There’s been a lot of negative stuff.” Though Dornan had an inkling a video featuring a bunch of celebrities self-isolating in their palatial homes might not be well-received, he was blissfully unaware of the extent of the backlash. “It’s a funny thing, not being on social media, I wasn’t really aware of the negative reaction to it,” he says. “But I was made aware quite quickly by some mates.”

Having not been directly exposed to the criticisms, mockery, and parodies filling social media, Dornan is able to make peace with his involvement in the video. “[Gal] was trying to do a good and kind thing,” he says. “I just got dragged along with it.”

Still don’t know why everyone lost their shit over this.

    • paulkinsey-av says:

The same reason everyone freaked out about Ben Affleck’s back tattoo or Jessica Simpson not knowing whether Chicken of the Sea was chicken or fish. Because Godot and her friends have money and fame and good looks and ordinary people enjoy taking them down a peg when they show their imperfections. Also, because it really was tone-deaf and the singing was bad.

    • longtimelurkerfirsttimetroller-av says:

Probably because you grew up without a father. No, I’m not your dad.

Because the internet is not happy unless it’s shitting on something. It must feed only to shit. Also because it’s really terrible and annoying. You wanna do this, get good singers, not some douche in a glorified Skinemax movie. Granted I only ever got through about 30 seconds of the full video, but my most hated clip of the ones I actually did see was of Sarah Silverman. Not only is her singing godawful (probably because she is not a singer), but the look on her face irritates the shit out of me. It’s like she’s pretending that she’s learning something unbelievably profound from the lyrics, and is just realizing their importance or somesuch utter horseshit.

Did people lose their shit? All I saw what a bunch of people feeling (second hand) scundered just by watching it. I imagine (har har) thats what Jamie’s Irish mates were texting him after the vid was uploaded: ‘Scundered for you mate.’

    • forevergreygardens-av says:

If by “lost their shit” you mean “made fun of some out of touch idiots for an afternoon and then forgot about,” then your question begins to make sense.

  • thekinjacaffeinespider-av says:

Why would anyone ever think random singing on the internet is a “lovely thing to do”?
Suck it up. Just own it, Jamie.

    • paulkinsey-av says:

Not just lovely. “Good and kind.” I guess the idea is that they were giving people hope in a dark time, but reminding the plebes that you and your friends are quarantined in a mansion while they’re stuck in a 500 sq ft apartment with a roommate and a cat isn’t a great way to do that.

    • deeeeznutz-av says:

Funny, “suck it up, get over it” is literally my reaction to anyone offended by the video.

      • thekinjacaffeinespider-av says:

I haven’t actually watched it. Is it that bad?

        • deeeeznutz-av says:

That’s the funny part, it’s actually not all that bad (in terms of showing off, not the actual singing which is generally pretty low quality). I didn’t watch the whole thing because I don’t really care much what celebrities are up, but from the parts I saw nobody was using it as a “cribs-lite” or flaunting that they’re in mansions. Our culture these days is just a complete tear-down culture where people just try to find a flaw in anything and shit on people for doing it. Nobody should feel like they have to apologize for doing the video.

          • thekinjacaffeinespider-av says:

            You reading this, Jamie?!

          • callmeshoebox-av says:

They don’t have to apologize, they just have to STFU.

          • deeeeznutz-av says:

Why are you so hostile to people making a random dumb, harmless video?

          • callmeshoebox-av says:

Not hostile, just want them to check themselves. When I’m throwing flaming shitbags at their door then you can call me hostile.

          • deeeeznutz-av says:

Let me ask you though…how is that video any different than every other celebrity out there making videos or doing shows from their homes?

          • callmeshoebox-av says:

A musician giving a free concert from their home is miles away from a bunch of rich buttholes telling us we’re all in this together from their mansions.

  • gaith-av says:

“After filming a couple seconds of himself singing in the bathroom of his house, Dornan sent it off to Wiig without a second thought. ‘Whatever happens, happens,’ he said.”  Hannah Arendt once coined a memorable phrase about this sort of thing.

    • whodateatindatnastyfood-av says:

“It is, in fact, far easier to act under conditions of tyranny than it is to think”?  When Kristen Wiig calls, you gotta answer.

  • yummsh-av says:

They’re turning on each other! Keep firing, assholes!

  • martianlaw-av says:

He’s gone from a Dom to a Sub. Not Sexy!

  • brontosaurian-av says:

I think a majority of people, not all, just found it stupid and easy to make fun of. There’s always people outraged and it’s easy to find a few tweets that are “outraged” to pretend everyone was. Because some places *eh hem* love to spin the most scandalous take for clickbait purposes.

  • arrowe77-av says:

The backlash never should have been this big. I can understand people poking fun at the video, but being angry? This country is unusually obsessed with celebrities. It’s not normal nor healthy.

  • binder88-av says:

So THIS is where the give-a-shits convene!

  • enemiesofcarlotta-av says:

Yes, I feel really bad for every rich celebrity in that video.
