To be honest, I thought Connelly did a really great job with a character that didn’t necessary have that much going for it on paper.There was something great about the sense you got that Penny and Maverick had this large story behind them, but the movie never stops to explicitly tell all the parts of it. Instead you just watch these two character with that history interact.
It was one of those throwbacks to the original – the admiral’s daughter Maverick got busted for, the one he went ballistic for (before Kelly McGillis) and crashed and burned. At least, that’s what I got out of it…And yes, I did watch the original after I saw the sequel.
