It turns out that fans don’t have as much power over movies as they might think. Sure, every now and then, they can will a John Krasinski into a Multiverse Of Madness or the teeth out of Sonic the Hedgehog’s head. But the almighty Jessica Chastain will not bend to their demands.

Despite much speculation, Chastain will not star in a film adaptation of the Taylor Jenkins Reid bestseller, The Seven Husbands Of Evelyn Hugo. After a year of fans demanding she sign copies of the book (but never a contract), the Oscar-winner told E! News that there is “zero possibility” of her playing Celia St. James in the film, which is probably just as well because, though Chastain loves “how excited the fans are” about Netflix’s upcoming adaptation, being cast by the Evelyn Hugo-heads out there sounds exhausting. When Chastain appeared in A Doll’s House on Broadway, fans would be outside “every single day” with copies of the book for her to sign.

Earlier this year, Chastain made the unfortunate mistake of saying she was open to receiving a script for the film on Watch What Happens Live. Those haunting five words (“Sure, send me a script”) backfired, and Chastain’s fan-casting became gospel. Fans began asking Chastain to sign copies of Reid’s book. Chastain refused because she wasn’t “attached” and that “it feels wrong and like I’m taking credit for someone else’s work.”

Adaptations by Taylor Jenkins Reid are quickly replacing those superhero properties everyone’s tired of. 2023 saw the release of two filmed versions of her work, One True Loves and Daisy Jones And The Six. The latter received praise from the surviving members of Fleetwood Mac, which is more than we can say for the former. Nevertheless, more Reid is on the way. Little Fires Everywhere showrunner Liz Tigelaar is reportedly working on an adaptation of Reid’s 2021 book, Malibu Rising. Maybe there’s a part for Jessica Chastain in that?

probably for the best, considering Evelyn’s Cuban.

I also suspect, they’re going to have to have 2 – 3 actresses play the part (minimally, that first marriage is going to have to be a different actress unless we’re making big story changes) and I suspect Jessica Chastain is less interested in being in what could be a minor chunk of the movie, tbh.

Maybe I’m still salty from the new Indiana Jones but knowing Hollywood they’ll only cast one person and use awkward aging techniques.

A movie like Indiana Jones (or Tron: Legacy or Captain America: Civil War) can get away with stuff like that because they’re expected to cost hundreds of millions of dollars to produce anyway. Smaller, non-VFX heavy films tend to still use multiple actors. The exception seems to be if someone like a Robert Zemeckis or David Fincher gets attached.FWIW, I prefer using one actor and their likeness throughout an entire film. There have been so many times where I’m taken out of the movie because the actor hired to play a young version of the lead barely resembles a relative, much less a youthful version of the actor. CG de-aging won’t get better unless it’s put in practice, so I’m willing to sit through the growing pains of awkward VFX aging techniques. YMMV of course.

          Seriously?

It’s possible, but unless they age her up at the jump (which they might), I’m pretty sure she’s 14 during the first marriage. I don’t know that they can Benjamin Button that.

But Celia St. James, who fans wanted Chastain to play, is not. She’s a blue eyed, red head of Irish decent and Evelyn’s partner.

      • chris-finch-av says:

Ah, didn’t catch that; thanks for the correction. I don’t blame Chastain for turning down such a thankless role; Celia, at least as written, is kinda annoying and thinly characterized.

Going to be honest – that has not been clear from most of the reporting.

What do Evelyn’s cigars have to do with it?

  • Blanksheet-av says:

It would have been better journalism, in my opinion, if you had mentioned the plot of the book so we could see why fans wanted Chastain so much.

Earlier this year, Chastain made the unfortunate mistake of saying she was open to receiving a script for the film on Watch What Happens Live. That’s gotta’ especially suck, considering that actors are probably sick of hearing that question so many times in the first place. Unless they’re in an active negotiation, why would an actor not want a job?

  • kinjacaffeinespider-av says:

She’s a Chastain-iac, I tells ya, a Chastain-iac on the floor! Rejecting husbands as she’s never done before!

  • ryanlohner-av says:

John Krasinski as Mr. Fantastic doesn’t count. The entire scene is an open, glorious “Fuck you” to people who want these movies to be nothing but franchise hand jobs, and it’s now fully confirmed he’s not playing the main version.
