It’s never easy to figure out, in advance, what’s going to become the internet’s next major obsession. Maybe it’s a particularly dopey picture of a dog. Maybe it’s a random stock photo of a guy checking out a woman who’s not his girlfriend. Maybe it’s a Vermont senator and former presidential candidate, waiting for this show to get on the road while sporting some pretty kickass mittens.
It was that latter one today, certainly. Because while Joe Biden became President Of The United States today, Bernie Sanders appears to have ascended to his role as King Of The Memes. In fact, the internet was so delighted by shots of the 79-year-old Vermonter looking cozy at Biden’s inauguration earlier this afternoon that they just kind of went wild with it, transforming much of Twitter into an elaborate game of Where’s Bernie.
Tragically, our very favorite image, a picture of Bernie on the Frasier couch that was tweeted out by Peri Gilpin, appears to have been deleted. But there really were a lot of amazing efforts, all driven by a sort of monomaniacal need to see Bernie transplanted throughout history. Why this particular picture? Why this exact moment? Who can say. There’s a certain fundamental Bernie-ness to the image, though, a world-weary resignation to the fact that, well, it’s time to sit out in the cold for two hours and watch some other guy become president again. Call it heartwarming, for a particularly irascible sort of heart.
(And if you want real heartwarming, you can always dip back to remind yourself of the story of who gave Sanders the mittens in question—Jen Ellis, a retired Vermont teacher, gave them to him a few years back.)

This Frasier one?https://knowyourmeme.com/photos/1997256-bernie-sanders-in-parka-and-mittens-at-joe-bidens-inaugurationThe Internet never forgets…
a picture of Bernie on the Frasier couch that was tweeted out by Peri Gilpin, appears to have been deletedThe chair makes much more sense than the couch — but now I wonder: was there ever a couch pic, and was it possibly deleted because the creator realized “Frajer couch” just ain’t a thing?* Or is this simply an A.V. Club gaffe, and will someone be fired for this blunder? Someone please tell me…’cuz I’m listening.
*Obligatory “I should know, I’m Frajer” reference.
“King of the Memes” is better than being president anyway. I mean, nobody keeps a folder of presidents or presidential candidates. Women, maybe, but not presidential candidates. Memes, on the other hand? Let’s just say I have a lot of advice animals saved up for the next time we decide those are funny again.
No, no, thats all wrong. Women go in binders.
sorry this was the one
A little local flavour on the meme:
What a hoser.
Bernie Sanders can be King of the Memes as long as he never becomes President. When Trump claimed he really won the 2020 election, he was just following Bernie’s playbook. Sanders still complains that the 2016 primary was rigged despite having no evidence of such an outrageous accusation. Let the little troll sit in his corner pouting because Democratic voters rejected him twice. If he hates DC so much, he can go hang out with Trump and whine about how Hillary cheated them out of their victory.
Honestly though, on the one hand I’m like let Bernie be Bernie, but on the other hand I’m annoyed by people not dressed for the occasion (any occasion, really) – even more so knowing that the argument for Bernie isn’t one of lack of money. On the third hand, it’s insane both the election and inauguration continue to happen in the cold months with no benefit to modern democracy (which obviously remains the actual reason).
Wait, where did that third hand come from?!
I’m pleading the fifth…
This is how people in Vermont dress for formal occasions. Also, he’s repping a Burton snowboard jacket so a nice shoutout to one of the state’s major businesses on a national platform.
Nah. Vermont is my home state, despite not living in the US or even being a citizen (but doing a lot of virtual work there), I know they can glam it up. It’s no Hollywood, but it ain’t merely green hills either.
This is probably my favourite. Source:https://twitter.com/KaiserNeko/status/1352066768878116865?s=19
One boring work meeting well idled-away
Sure was fun seeing him as a cute trending item, not president, a year after people were posting actual takes on twitter about how hearing his voice was triggering because they blamed him for Clinton losing.
Miserable fraud is miserable.
Pfft, as relieved as I am to have a sane person in the White House, this whole generation needs to retire already. For meme worthy inauguration look, Ella Emhoff or gtfo.
Joe Biden is the first, and probably last, president from the Silent Generation. The next earlier born president was Jimmy Carter, whose 1924 birth year puts him in the Greatest Generation. The next three later born presidents were born in 1946.
I look forward to the near future when humans communicate exclusively in memes, kinda like that “darmok at tanagra” star trek episode
I’m sorry. I saw him and thought, ‘he’s prepping for going ice fishing’.
I made this one up:
