Jonathan Majors filmed breaking up definitely real high school fight

Jonathan Majors, awaiting trial for domestic violence, just so happened to be present to keep the peace in a high school squabble

A new video obtained by TMZ suggests that Johnathan Majors is actually a really good person who abhors violence. In fact, Johnathan Majors is a person who stops violence when he conveniently happens to witness it from across the street at a nearby In-N-Out. If Jonathan Majors sees violence happening, he will rush right into frame to keep the peace. That’s just the kind of guy he is.

Majors, who unrelatedly stands accused of assaulting his ex-girlfriend, threw himself in between two allegedly high-school-aged girls who were physically fighting at Hollywood High School, according to TMZ. The young people in the vicinity can be heard giggling while they film the alarming impromptu fight. One onlooker in the video even appears to be filming on a laptop and a cellphone, an amazingly lucky coincidence given that a Marvel star just happened to arrive on the scene. Majors gently keeps the two unidentified girls apart and is seen “urging them to calm down and telling them it isn’t worth it to fight,” per TMZ. Behind the camera, a young woman’s voice gleefully calls, “Hashtag first high school fighting experience!”

“Unclear where school faculty was during the brawl, but it’s a good thing Majors decided to step in,” reads TMZ’s report. “We’re told after the video cut, both girls went their separate ways.”

Majors did not go his separate ways with TMZ, as the outlet apparently tracked him down “hours after the fight” to get the full scoop. “Were you just trying to be a helpful guy?” The TMZ cameraperson asks. Majors confirms: “Yeah.” No, he didn’t know the girls. “It was a school fight and I saw it.” Of course, he wanted to make sure nobody got hurt. Hopefully, everyone is okay. What’s his message to the girls? “Stay cool.”

Cool, indeed. You know what’s not cool? Thousands of Twitter users accusing Majors of staging the fight for his own benefit. “His PR” began trending on the platform, as in “His PR team is working overtime,” or “His PR team pulling WWE stunts,” or “his PR team thinks we were born yesterday.” Desus Nice, formerly of Desus & Mero, injected some topical Hollywood humor by joking, “nah he got the same pr team as amptp.”

It’s just like Twitter to try to twist a moment of selfless heroism and mentorship by a celebrity into some sort of public relations conspiracy. Anyway, in news surely unconnected to this, Majors is due back in court tomorrow, at which time a new date will be set for his criminal trial. There have been multiple delays for the trial, first because the prosecution requested more time (“multiple alleged abuse victims of Majors” are reportedly cooperating with the Manhattan District Attorney’s office), and then because the defense claimed “deficiencies” in discovery, per Deadline. Majors could face up to a year in prison if he is convicted of assault.

it’s honestly the funniest video i’ve ever seen. it’s even funnier if it’s real because of how badly it backfired.

  • michelle-fauxcault-av says:

If it’s fake it’s pretty lame. Why not go all out? Just set up a green screen and have him break up Godzilla and Mothra going at it or some shit.

I don’t understand why they didn’t all dance to “Beat It” afterwards.

‘Wherever there is injustice, you will find him…whenever there is suffering, he will be there…whenever liberty is threatened, you will find…Jonathan Majors.’

Why does this video look like it was filmed on a 2003-era flip phone?

  • the1969dodgechargerfan-av says:

So do anything to save his reputation?

  • brianjwright-av says:

This is lame, but it’s not the worst video where the celebrity dude gets between two high school girls.

  • chris-finch-av says:

Every day visiting the AVClub is like opening the Dead Dove: Do Not Eat bag, but the dissonance between the headline implying the video’s faked and the disdain towards people expressing the same opinion confuses the heck outta me. Like there are so many layers of snark and irony slapped on top of one another I have zero idea what the article is trying to say and why they think this is worth writing about.

    • Bazzd-av says:

Millenials have been irony poisoned by the collapse of society around us in slow motion exactly the way nerds and geeks and artists said it would. Now it’s impossible for us to just share our feelings honestly in public without 7 layers of “Don’t fire me for acknowledging this job kills babies” and “Please don’t hit me in the face with that baton, officer, I can’t lick your boot in good conscience but I’ll joke about how funny it would be if I did!”

    • actionactioncut-av says:

I’m not sure how anyone could think it was geniunely disdainful of the folks calling bullshit, especially when you read this bit:It’s just like Twitter to try to twist a moment of selfless heroism and mentorship by a celebrity into some sort of public relations conspiracy. Anyway, in news surely unconnected to this, Majors is due back in court tomorrow, at which time a new date will be set for his criminal trial. You’re saying that there are “so many layers of snark” but it’s exactly one layer, and it’s very obvious sarcasm?

    • milligna000-av says:

I guess that’s easier than writing something genuinely witty.

  • bio-wd-av says:

This man is shamelessly stealing from Michael Jacksons Bad video.  Boooooo this man!  (Also for the thing he’s legally in trouble for)

  • taylorhandsome-av says:

I hope nobody crossed a picket line to write this scene …

  • mortbrewster-av says:

I also broke up a fight among teen girls near a school that I’m supposed to stay at least 150 feet away from and mentioned it to no applause.

    • jodyjm13-av says:

      Well, that’s because you’re actually a bastard. Or a son of a sea-cook, depending.

“With all due respect Your Honor, I have been advised by one T, Mister ‘Don’t be a fool, stay in school’, and request that charges are dropped immediately”.

I’ve got his LP somewhere. The one that stuck in my head goes something like… MUTHA! There is no otha! Like… MUTHA!Words to live by, T.

  • jodyjm13-av says:

I’m not going to bother actually going to these sites to check my predictions, but I’m guessing something like the following headlines are being displayed:Jezebel: “Majors breaks up obviously staged fight in sad attempt to drum up sympathy before court date”The Root: “Internet piles on everyday hero Majors, just like it’s done for the past year over fake claims of violence”

    • electricsheep198-av says:

Yeah, those ridiculous blacks and wimmin with their dumb opinions.  Not like the AVClub who never has any bias or spin whatsoever!

      • jodyjm13-av says:

It was just an (obviously poor) attempt at poking fun of how one-sided the Majors coverage has been on both sites. I find it amusing that two sister sites have such wildly varying takes on the same case, that’s all. Nothing was meant regarding the reporting of either site in general, or the opinions of any oppressed or disadvantaged group. And yes, there have been times I’ve poked fun at the AVClub’s bias and spin.

        • electricsheep198-av says:

Is it? Because if you didn’t “bother actually going to these sites” how could you claim to know that? I did a quick search for Jonathan Majors on both sites. On the Root, the headlines were all either factual (he’s going to court on xyz day) or acutely critical. On Jezebel, the headlines were similar to what’s been on AVClub, with, in fact, far less snark. Neither, notably, has a headline regarding this latest incident. So, you know…just some strange characterizations you made here that do not appear to be based in reality, which makes me wonder what they are based on.

    • ohnoray-av says:

nah The Root has no problem calling out BS. I don’t think this looks staged? but it is random as hell.

      • jodyjm13-av says:

nah The Root has no problem calling out BS.As a general rule, I have no trouble believing that; I’ve read no small number of perceptive, funny articles there. But the articles I’ve read on the Majors case have been so heavily slanted in his favor, to the point where nearly all of them mentioned his accuser’s name, that I have questions about their objectivity in this matter. I mean, I absolutely understand that there’s been a long, disturbing pattern of white women lying to get black men in trouble in this country, but there’s also been a long, disturbing pattern of men using their positions of power and privilege to get away with abusing women.I don’t think this looks staged? but it is random as hell.Pretty much my thoughts as well. I can acknowledge that the timing is at least somewhat coincidental, but I really, really want more than that before I start going off into conspiracy theory land.

Wow. What happened to commenting over there? It looks like reader response is no longer acceptable. I wonder if …. never mind.

Kill yourself.  Just fucking do it and put us all out of your misery.

    • gargsy-av says:

ACTUAL Root quote: Here’s Why Jonathan Majors Is Getting a Major Side-Eye for Breaking Up High School Fight

But yes, please let us all know how The Root is tirelessly defending Majors.

  • bcfred2-av says:

Pretty good fake fight, though.  Can stuntpeople work right now?

  • simplepoopshoe-av says:

Between this and the obvious hush money the other day, I’m stunned.

  • horshu2-av says:

This will surely sway Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis into his corner.

  • berty2001-av says:

I mean, it’s probably fake. But even if it isn’t, can you imagine the headlines if someone spotted him just watching on as two girls fought. Not a good look.

    • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

if he was just standing around and watching, that would definitely be weird, but i think the most reasonable thing for any grown man who happens to find themselves near teens fighting is to mind your own business and keep it moving.

  • deeeeznutz-av says:

Fucking Street Sets! I thought it would look real!

  • testybesty-av says:

The grammar of this headlines breaks my brain.

  • gargsy-av says:

“The young people in the vicinity can be heard giggling while they film the alarming impromptu fight.”

I don’t buy that it was real at all, but not because the people surrounding the fight, recording the fight and egging the girls on were giggling. They were all enjoying watching two people fight.

Have you never encountered two school-age kids fighting, with a group of other school-age kids surrounding the fight and laughing and cheering it on?

  • buko-av says:

the fight looks real enough? Or at least it looks like any other random fight vid I’ve seen on YouTube or Reddit, so if it was produced, good on the production crew and actors for verisimilitude.I don’t honestly know whether people should involve themselves in fights like this, generally, but if that’s a good deed, so be it? Someone doing something horrible doesn’t mean that they’re horrible in every facet of their lives, or that they can’t also do good things elsewhere. Just like someone being wonderful in most respects doesn’t mean they can’t also be awful in others. People are complex.

    • jalapenogeorge-av says:

Yep. Had a look, and it seems legit to me. The kid filming with both a laptop and a phone is a bit odd, but hey, I dunno how kids roll these days…

  • ghboyette-av says:

It really didn’t seem fake. And I haven’t been able to find any evidence that it was. And there doesn’t seem to be any evidence that you found either. Maybe this was just an instance of him being a decent human being? Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying he didn’t do the stuff he’s accused of doing, but this seems like you’re reaching/hoping. Oh, wait, the writer is Mary Kate Carr. Enough said.
