Tonight, at the Golden Globes, Ellen DeGeneres was presented with the second-ever Carol Burnett Award (the show’s new TV equivalent to the Cecil B. DeMille film award), but before DeGeneres took the stage and gave a very good and funny speech—including callouts to her “husband Mark” and the classic reminder for her kids at home to go to bed—Kate McKinnon made a speech of her own about the impact that DeGeneres has had on LGBTQ representation on television.

The clever central gag of McKinnon’s speech was that she was reading off a list of things she got from DeGeneres, including big stuff like the confidence to embrace the fact that she’s gay and could still be a TV star alongside small stuff like the specific clothing items that McKinnon has stolen from when she pretends to be DeGeneres on the Ellen show. It was very funny and very touching, and it was obvious that the arc of DeGeneres’ career has meant a whole lot to McKinnon. Here’s a clip:

She’s both an important figure in the history of LGBTQ representation in the United States and a very wealthy person who brushes shoulders with other very wealthy people, many of whom are terrible. There’s an irresolvable tension between those two concepts. It’s totally valid to point out the moral failure of hanging out with a guy whose administration worked hard to suppress her rights (though as a super wealthy person, she was well insulated from that suppression). But the real takeaway from this whole thing should be that celebrity doesn’t make you thoughtful or intelligent, just like thoughtfulness and intelligence don’t make you famous. Celebrities are already visible, so they’re convenient as the faces of social progress.

When it all comes down to the bare bones… Ellen is funny. No matter where it came from or what it was borne out of… She has always made me laugh. She has a gravitational pull that placed her in an influential spot, but what put her there in the first place is that she can make people smile.I love her for that. She rocks.

She made one move that some people didn’t agree with. Does that erase all the good things she’s done in her entire life?

This is the only comment anyone needs to make on this article. Fuck Ellen.

What are Ellen’s go-to classic clips, her equivalent to Carol Burnett’s Scarlett O’Hara entrance? I know she’s made a lot of money and was important for gay representation, but what were her obvious iconic moments that justify this award? The clip package was pretty thin; was her old sitcom that memorable? An American Express commercial? The people she named as her inspiration -Bob Newhart, Mary Tyler Moore, etc. – do not have this award. Julia Louis-Dreyfus does not have this award, her clip package would be some of the best comedy moments in TV history.

I can’t say I’ve ever watched her talk show, but her speech was actually pretty funny.

Not a single one of us isn’t complex. Do I respect what she has done with her life and career? Yep. Do I respect her willingness to hang out and have (apparently) fun with someone I do NOT admire? Yeah, no. And it affected the way I feel about her. But I refuse to negate the good influence she has had on the culture. Do I think her influence has affected others who needed it? It’s certainly possible – and probably more than partly due to her willingness to be friendly and nice when I would have left.
