HBO will ring in the Halloween season with a horror story more existential than predatory: Mrs. Fletcher, a “dual coming-of-age story” based on the book by The Leftovers’ Tom Perrotta, follows a single mom who finds herself lost after her son, Brendan (Jackson White), heads off to college. As the high school jock tries to navigate his hyper-woke collegiate campus, Kathryn Hahn’s eponymous Eve Fletcher begins pushing her own boundaries—sexual ones, to be specific, with both women and men.

“As mother and son find themselves alone for the first time,” reads a synopsis from HBO, “this sharp, provocative series navigates themes of parenthood, sexuality, love, and identity in a cultural moment when attitudes about gender and sex are evolving rapidly.”

Watch the provocative trailer below.

Mrs. Fletcher premieres on HBO on October 27.

I’ve looked at Kathryn Hahn totally differently ever since she did those commercials where she’s in the mom jeans, rolling around on the hood of a Chrysler Pacifica.I have very specific tastes is what I’m saying.

Holy shit. I’m a cord cutter, and I thought your comment was some kind of joke. I’m completely disgusted by this ad campaign, and I have zero respect for her now. It’s one thing to schill for a corporation. It’s  whole different thing to roll all over an American car. Paris Hilton, anyone?

Honestly, I think this looks pretty dreadful, but it’s nice to see Jasmine Cephas Jones!

It’s based on a Tom Perrotta novel? And it’s trying to deal with sexual politics? Yeah, that sounds dreadful. At least the series won’t end with the college kid cutting off his own dick. Probably. Edit: Also, the trailer totally gives off a hilarious “college girl’s all like ‘where’s my consent,’ but hot mom’s all like ‘gimme some!’” It’s just pulpy as hell.

This isn’t the Doc Ock origin story I was expecting…

The Leftovers was very interesting but it moved too slow for me.  I’m up for giving this a shot, but at the same time is there a more played out trope than ‘80s style jock as fish out of water’

When does she start solving her neighbors’ murders?

  • jeninabq-av says:

Yawn. Can we stop idolizing and fetishizing female characters who wrap themselves around their offspring. I mean…I’m as bored with this narrative as I am with the anti-hero male-centric stories.

oh hell yeah. give me more hahn, baby.

The only reason i’d watch this is because i feel Kathryn Hahn is one of the bestest underappreciated actresses of this generation.

I’m sure that if you were to see a map of everyone who works in Hollywood connected by their Talent Agencies, you’d see answers to questions like “why is this guy famous? …oh, they had to book him in five films in order to retain Tom Cruise and Joe Piscopo, i get it”. I bet Kathryn Hahn has had the same agent for twenty years, and they’re very nice, aand they all have dinner together, and her career is a reflection of her decision not to upgrade her Agent in 2012 or something.
