Even Katy Perry’s mom fell for that viral AI Met Gala photo

The "Never Really Over" singer wasn't even present at fashion's biggest night yesterday

Stars, they’re just like us… sometimes their moms fall for AI-generated images on Facebook. Katy Perry had to give her own mother a little lecture on the dangers of internet trickery, when she got an incredibly sweet text saying that she “look[ed] like the rose parade, you are your own float” on the Met Gala carpet last night. The thing is, Katy Perry wasn’t anywhere near the Met on Monday. She was in the studio recording something new, according to a post on her Instagram. (Sorry Katy fans—the sound is muted.)

Perry’s mom had fallen for a series of AI-generated images that swirled around the internet last night, showing the singer in two separate looks that frankly would have outdone a lot of the actual gowns on display had they been real. Sure, those vines look way too smooth in the first picture and the carpet isn’t even close to correct in the second, but we’d imagine it’s pretty easy to miss those things when you see the undeniable face of your daughter in a really beautiful dress. It’s not like this was one of those shrimp Jesus photos, and even those continue to trick people somehow.

“lol mom the AI got you too, BEWARE!” Perry responded to her mom in a screenshot she shared of their text exchange (via Instagram). But in her mom’s defense, the photos tricked a lot of potentially more internet-savvy folks as well. A tweet reacting to the deception has over 60,000 likes as of this writing, and it’s not the only one. What seems to be the original photo, from a user called @jxries, has over 314,000.

Perry wasn’t the only artist to get the AI stylist treatment last night. Photos of Rihanna in a large circular gown and Dua Lipa in a ruffled corset and bow also did the rounds, racking up similarly frightening like and view counts. (In what should strike a little fear into the hearts of designers, these looks are also arguably better than a lot of the real ones.) Dua Lipa did turn up later in a completely different Marc Jacobs number, dispelling some of the speculation around her photo. Rihanna, on the other hand, was at home in bed with the flu (via People) and definitely not carting around a giant, bird-covered marshmallow

In many ways, this feels like yet another example of AI officially surpassing any feasible point of containment. If it can trick your own mother, its ability to trick everyone else is a very real fear. Still, if you descend too far into this particular panic attack, here’s something of a lifeline: in 2019, Perry attended the Met Gala dressed as a hamburger. AI has come a long way, but only a human mind could come up with something as dazzling as that.

Between all this AI bullshit and those T-Mobile commercials with Zach Braff I’m pretty much ready to drive right into the Grand Canyon.

Don’t worry, the following isn’t AI, if it makes you feel better……probably doesn’t, but

first ai came for internet pictures of the met gala and i said nothing.

I feel like these fall a bit more into the “digitally altered” than pure “AI”. There’s some funky shit going on with the hands of the photographers in the first Katy Perry image, but by and large these are far better and lack the typical obvious “tells” of AI pictures, where you can pretty easily call them out because so much of the elements usually in the background just won’t make sense. They also lack that weird “sheen” that most AI pics have where everything looks like Steve Carrell from the poster for the 40 Year Old Virgin. While these might have started as AI, there’s definitely some digital alterations going on to make them look more “real”.

also possible that the ai is getting more i

        Not really.

well i was joking, but i do think these so-called telltale signs will get less telltale as the tech keeps getting billions of dollars dumped into it. there will always be others, though.

If you look at some of the faces of the photographers, they’re not properly shaped. It seems more likely to be AI than photoshop.

Most of them look fine, especially in the Rihanna pic. I think it’s a combination of AI for the main foreground focus, while maybe doing some cleanup in the background to fix things to make it more believable.Getting an image that looks this clean and realistic, especially with so many complicated background elements including hands and camera equipment, is pretty unreachable for AI. You’d expect it to be a lot more obvious. Some of the cameras and hands look pretty dubious, but not to the degree you usually see in purely AI images.

They pass at first blush, definitely, but the closer you look, you see things like Cousin It off to the left of the image:And then you see things like the camera flash lens lighting in the tent on the upper right:  The scary thing is that it’ll all go away eventually and we’ll be helpless to discern reality from illusion.

That hair guy just looks like the top of someone’s head who’s looking down into their camera lens. It looks a bit elongated but that could just be a distortion from the lens taking the photo of Rihanna. It’s nowhere close to the usual mishmash of background horrors you find in most AI images.I have my doubts about how much better it’s ever really going to get.

The fact that, in the second picture, Katy Perry looks like a barbie doll and not a person is enough for me to say AI.

That Riri one fucking slaps though

    still would

A bunch of idiot pro-Hamas agitators got arrested trying to march on the Met Gala. Props to the NYPD 💪

Even a boomer couldn’t tell AI was fake? Truly it has passed the point of no return.

  • dresstokilt-av says:

Do we have any evidence that Katy Perry herself is not some digital fabrication?

  • realtimothydalton-av says:

umm all of those look fake as shit
