Kevin Smith threatens that a third Clerks movie will still happen

It’s been years since we heard about Kevin Smith’s plan to make a third Clerks movie, with the last word being that he had so much trouble getting production off the ground that Smith was thinking about just turning his script into a comic book. Since then, Smith has evidently dedicated his filmmaking time to his Jay And Silent Bob Reboot, but don’t think that the impulse to make Clerks III has gone away. On Instagram today, Smith revealed that he’s restarting production on Clerks III, but he won’t be going back to the initial script from a few years ago. Instead, he’s going to write an entirely new screenplay that he just started working on last night—which means it might still be awhile before we all get to enjoy another Kevin Smith movie about Kevin Smith stuff.

As noted by /Film, the new movie will star Jeff Anderson and Brian O’Halloran once again, with Anderson apparently having been the big holdout. Now that he has given Smith his approval for whatever the Clerks III plan is, it’s time to get started on this whole thing again.

I’m just imagining being pushed into watching it on opening day with my roommate and whining, “I’m not even supposed to be here today.”

  • westcoastwestcoast-av says:

What was the beef between him and Affleck?

    • oopec-av says:

Contrary to popular belief, Smith did NOT think he was da bomb in Phantoms.

    • lattethunder-av says:

Have you not seen Jersey Girl?

    • Fleur-de-lit-av says:

They stopped talking because Kevin Smith kept ‘telling tales out of school.’ Apparently the breaking point was when he relayed the fact that Baffleck had referred to kissing a man as the greatest acting challenge a man could ever take on.

    • hawk777-av says:

Jennifer Garner doesn’t like Kevin. Kevin publicly complained about Jennifer Garner not liking him, putting Jennifer Garner’s husband in a rather awkward position. Jennifer Garner’s husband stopped talking to Kevin as a result.

  • sirwarrenoates-av says:

I’m probably in the minority in that I LIKED Clerks II so I’m curious to see where he goes with this one.

    • impliedkappa-av says:

I think I would only be excited if they announced that the movie will just be three previously unaired episodes of Clerks: The Animated Series.

    • squatlobster-av says:

I liked it too. Obviously there’s a hell of a lot wrong with it, but any film that shows the main characters irresponsibly bunking off from work to ride the go-karts gets a free pass from me. In the same way that no film that lingers over the food and procedure of a medieval banquet can be truly bad.

    • megasmacky-av says:

Hey, I liked it too and I’m really fucking cool!

    • thisisnotausername11-av says:

Clerks 2 is the superior Clerks

      • sirwarrenoates-av says:

That’s a neat hot take, but I’m pretty sure you’re wrong…I mean, the first Clerks ends on such a down note. That’s what life is, a series of bad endings. All Clerks 2 had was a bunch of Muppets.

        • officermilkcarton-av says:

Yeah, but all The Muppet Movie had was a bunch of Muppets (give or take assure assorted cameos) and it’s awesome.

          • sirwarrenoates-av says:

It’s OKAY but its no “The Muppets Go Medieval” with Troy McClure…Also, The Muppet Show > The Muppet Movie

          • igotlickfootagain-av says:

I still don’t know why they made that one Muppet out of leather.

        • himespau-av says:

And Pillowpants.  And the Listerfiend.  And retaking Porchmonkeys…

      • toddgoslin-av says:

Big black cocks with pearly white cum may be the best line in film history…..and it wasn’t in clerks 2.Although “Kelly can be a guy’s name too” is sheer poetry.

      • no-face-av says:

Let’s bring that down a notch

    • synthwavesamurai-av says:

I am curious about Clerks 3. The Clerks franchise is like the Before trilogy for slackers. I do wish he would retire the Jay & Silent Bob characters. Fifty year old man children who have dressed and acted the same for decades still dealing drugs in front of convenience stores? It’s just not cute anymore.

      • sirwarrenoates-av says:

I’m completely fine with him doing at sixty, cause that makes it even funnier in how clueless those two are. Not to mention as I get older I do know folks who are stuck in that lifestyle/mindset so…

    • michaelkelehan-av says:

I don’t know, I remember it getting pretty good reviews when it came out, and I certainly liked it.

    • muddybud-av says:

I thought Clerks 2 was a decent enough movie about Gen X growing up so I’m a bit curious about seeing what he has to say about Gen X growing old.

    • murrychang-av says:

A bunch of my friends who were huge Kevin Smith fans went to see it opening night and were disappointed.  I saw it a few days later and didn’t think it was even close to as bad as they said it was.  I liked it too.

    • jurippe-av says:

My friends and I were Clerks fans, and we loved 2. I’m not sure what’s all the internet negativity about.

  • charliedesertly-av says:

This guy’s a pop culture tumor.

  • seanathin-av says:

I’m always down, but I’ll believe it when cameras are rolling.

  • stevie-jay-av says:

Give it a rest, Kevin. We’ll talk after you release your fiasco to come, buddy. Can’t say I share your optimism, fella.

  • kool-aid-congo-av says:

Say what you will about Kevin Smith, but “OOOH Navy Seals” still makes me laugh when I think about it.

  • bellybuttonlintconnoisseur-av says:
  • liebkartoffel-av says:

I’ve kind of looped around on Kevin Smith. Yeah, he hasn’t been relevant since the 90s, and no I’m not going to bother seeing any of his new output, but if the dude just wants to get high and make some lazy movies with his friends then who am–aw fuck, I just tricked myself into defending Adam Sandler too, didn’t I?

    • velvetal-av says:

It’s ok to defend Adam Sandler. Who among us wouldn’t be willing to take massive amounts of money for minimal effort? It’s the people who actually watch his movies, thus enabling more of them to be made, who should be hated on.

    • c8h18-av says:

LMAO literally thought that as I was reading your comment. Eh, Smith still gets the pass, nothing he’s made it worse than 50 First Dates.

      • tvcr3-av says:

When you had so many worse Adam Sandler movies to choose, why would you choose one with a competently written script and serviceable direction? It’s bland, but at least it feels like it’s made by professionals. Anything Smith has done after the original 5 View Askewniverse movies (except Zack and Miri Make A Porno) is amateurish dreck.Sandler gets the pass for occasionally putting out challenging, interesting work that rises well above both Smith and Sandler’s regular bar. Punch Drunk Love, Funny People, The Meyerowitz Stories, and Uncut Gems are so far out of reach of what Kevin Smith is even capable of.

        • c8h18-av says:

I mean, I know Chasing Amy hasn’t aged well, but when it came out it was far beyond what Mallrats was. I’ll totally admit Sandler has had more decent movies, I think I really disliked that movie because it was just so much worse than The Wedding Singer, how did Adam and Drew have such good chemistry and then have it be totally awful? Either way a lot of my opinion is nostalgic, so possibly wrong lol

      • pocketsander-av says:

nothing he’s made it worse than 50 First Dates.
Nah, his last few movies have been trash. I can maybe forgive Tusk, but Yoga Hosers was awful.

      • gurfinki-av says:

I love 50 First Dates, along with many of Sandler’s movies. Admittedly, almost all of them are old at this point, but The Meyerowitz Stories is quite good.

  • bossk1-av says:

I stopped watching the Jay and Silent Bob Reboot traile when his daughter appeared and “hilariously” started swearing.  But good luck to him.

  • velvetal-av says:

What was Jeff Anderson holding out for? $65 a day and all the beef jerky he can eat?

    • marsupilajones-av says:

Its never been openly discussed but if you read between the lines him and Smith had some sort of falling out. IIRC Anderson also basically quit acting and moved out of California about a decade ago.

      • velvetal-av says:

I think they’ve had a falling out after every time they worked on a movie together. I blame the lack of beef jerky rider in Anderson’s contract.

  • det-devil-ails-av says:

This’ll be good. Everybody joins AARP. They then take over the local chapter. Hijinks ensue.

  • pie-oh-pah-av says:

Clerks II is endlessly rewatchable for me. Maybe now that Jeff is back on board they can track down the kid that played Elias as well. Rosario was down when they first announced it, so hopefully she’s back too.

  • cjob3-av says:

Clerks was primarily about Dante realizing he needs to get his shit together, go back to school, and finally quit his dead-end job as a convenience store clerk. In the years-later sequel he’s working at McDonald’s 🙁

  • hankwilhemscreamjr-av says:

Maybe they can do a Kickstarter to raise money to have him not make the movie.

  • cjob3-av says:

Apparently even his instagram messages ramble on too long.

  • hawk777-av says:

Kevin saying he started writing a new draft the same day he talked to Jeff Anderson for the first time since the last time Jeff flaked on Clerks 3, apparently a week or so before filming was due to start. But Kevin’s sure that Jeff’s going to do it this time!

I’m getting Charlie Brown and the football flashbacks about the whole thing.

You can shit on Kevin Smith’s work all you want. But never can you shit on Kevin Smith.https://kitchenette.jezebel.com/stories-of-celebrities-in-restaurants-1740792794

    • elchappie2-av says:

I had never seen that before. That’s just awesome. I have watched most everything he has done including a lot of interviews, podcasts and all of his evening with specials.. He does seem like a stand up guy

    • bigt90-av says:

Agreed, he’s always been a very stand up guy, very passionate about his work and his hobbies. He’s doing what we all wish we could, knowing and rubbing shoulders with people we wish we could, while getting paid. Plus, I’m really happy to see he turned his health situation around, a bad heart attack can be a massive wake up call, good on him for losing all that weight and getting healthy.

  • preparationheche-av says:

“…the new movie will star Jeff Anderson and Brian O’Halloran once again, with Anderson apparently having been the big holdout.”He has said he would be willing to do Clerks 3, but only under any circumstances…

  • nycpaul-av says:

Oh!  Look at that face he’s making in the photo there!  I’ve never seen him do that!

  • the1969dodgechargerguy-av says:

What?  Will it have a plot how they’re old farts suffering heart attacks and need wheelchairs to get around?

  • stormcrow30-av says:

What is your beef with Kevin Smith?

  • Mr-John-av says:

I know it’s fashionable to shit on Kevin Smith, and as a fan I’ll be the first to admit he went through a (long) phase of very poor movies, however:ClerksChasing AmyDogmaRed StateAre genuinely good movies, Chasing Amy says more about modern sexuality twenty two years ago than most modern films come close to.Plus his work as a for hire director for the Arrowverse shows has been really solid.Guy can tell a story, and tell it well – he just sometimes picks the wrong story to tell.

  • richarddawsonsghost-av says:

That picture just makes me so incredibly sad about the looming spectre of aging.

  • mattthewsedlar-av says:

    There’s a second one?

  • ItsaScnew-av says:

I guess it’s cool to hate on Kevin Smith these days but I endlessly crave more Randal Graves quotes so I’m excited.
