Curb Your Enthusiasm will return to HBO for a twelfth season. Larry David confirmed the news at a TV Academy event for the Directors Guild Of America. David and Curb executive producer Jeff Schaffer were in attendance.

Back in February, HBO and HBO Max Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys explained that, “as usual, if [Larry] has an area that he is excited about, we’ll do more.”

And it would appear that David is excited about something.

Curb Your Enthusiasm premiered on HBO in 2000 and was based on a one-hour special that David and HBO originally envisioned as a one-and-done project. Since its premiere, the series has been nominated for 47 Primetime Emmy Awards— and has won twice, once for directing and once for editing—and won the Golden Globe for Best Television Series—Musical or Comedy in 2003. David, despite being nominated for Best Performance three times, has yet to take home the award.

Over its eleven-season run, the show has featured an impressive roster of guest stars including Martin Scorsese, Jon Hamm, Michael York, and the main cast of Seinfeld for a season that some fans consider a much better season finale for the NBC sitcom than what aired in 1998.

While there are no details at press time, it is assumed that the main cast of Curb will return for another go-around with the perpetually irritated David, including Jeff Garlin, JB Smoove, Cheryl Hines, and the unforgettably foul-mouthed Susie Essman.

The previous season wrapped up last December and found the fictionalized (but probably not that fictionalized) David dealing with a dead burglar, his pool, and his new show, Young Larry. Who’s going to be bothering David and company this year? Who’s to say, but there is surely no shortage of irritating people in Los Angeles for David to take to task.

I wish they could get Alec Berg and David Mandel to join the writing staff again. The show just hasn’t been as good since they left to run their own shows during that long hiatus between seasons 8 and 9.

Ah yes, Alec Berg. He’s got a good ‘John Houseman’ name. Alec Beeerg.
      Did
you hand in your assignment, Mr. Beeeerg?
But yeah I’m all for it, unless it takes away from ‘Barry’.

It made me smile so much years ago when I realized Alec Berg was a real person and it still cracks me up every time I see his name on the credits. And agreed; ‘Barry’ is phenomenal.

They snuck a lot of things like that into the TV series. Another example is when George Costanza wants to award The Foundation’s scholarship to a kid named Steven Koren, which also happens to be the name of one of the writers that season. If you pay close attention and know what to look for you also see a lot of writers and other folks from the show making quick onscreen appearances. I know these things because I’ve watched way too much Seinfeld, and have also watched the special features on the DVDs too much. That’s one thing I miss when watching things via streaming, you don’t get all of those behind the scenes looks.

The most recent season finale would not have worked as a series finale at all. Because nothing was resolved…

    • nickalexander01-av says:

Ending this series with nothing resolved seems right up the show’s alley.I mean, it’s called “Curb Your Enthusiasm”

David, despite being nominated for Best Performance three times, has yet to take home the award.Probably because his own performance is usually the worst thing about the show.

    A twelfth season. Its a 22nd year

That cash cow is probably begging for death, but our fascination with garbage men just never ends.

When is the last time you had fun?

I think he ate a really nice apricot back in 2015 once, but then remembered that the farmer was likely a white dude, and so had to spend several hours self-flagellating until he beat the sensation of joy out of the experience.

    • panthercougar-av says:

Begging for death? It’s still funny, and people still watch. Larry David the character is awful, but is there a lot of evidence that Larry David the person is garbage?

Pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty good. I’m doing a watch through for the first time and I’m at the spite store season, and after a rough start in Season 1, it has stayed good throughout.

    • antsnmyeyes-av says:

Spite store season is great! So is season 11.They’re all great actually, to varying degrees. I think the only season that’s maybe only “good” is season 9. But even there it has some great moments and is still good shit.

i think season 5, the richard lewis needs a kidney season, is the only weak one. leon joins in season 6 and it completely turbocharged the show.

        • deb03449a1-av says:

I love Leon but I’m actually surprised by how little he’s in it until Season 9 or so. I think it supercharges in general once he arrives though I don’t know if he is cause.

  • yougottabekinjame-av says:

If this involves Larry finding a way to give Jeff and Cheryl some shit about their recent negative press while still involving them as cast members… I’m in.

  • schmowtown-av says:

It’s hard to imagine this show winning awards for directing or editing nowadays, but it definitely deserves to win awards for… other things…. just not sure what those things are…

  • jodrohnson-av says:

no news on that biopic that got pulled?

    • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

it was originally a documentary and interview that he says he now wants to perform and record in front of an audience. i imagine they’ll repurpose some of the finished footage.

      • jodrohnson-av says:

i had heard he wanted to do a live introduction of it, not a full repurposing of the material

        • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

he didn’t really say much more than ‘i’d rather do it live’ so i mean we’re inferring what we can. from the trailer it seemed like the bulk was him being interviewed by larry charles, so i imagine he wants to do that part live and get some laughs.i thought it was weird because he notoriously hates audiences!

  • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

as long as there’s still gas in the tank i hope he just keeps going. i did a rewatch of season 4-the new one and as far back as season 5 the show was already looking like it was running out of steam and it always rebounds. also funny to see it as a history of modern comedy. there will be a season where ricky gervais is the big guest, but eric andre will have one line as a PA. same with someone like brandon wardell in a wordless role a few seasons ago.
