It sure seems that America’s late night hosts are a population particularly vulnerable to COVID-19. Seth Meyers has canceled his shows for the rest of the week after testing positive for the second time this year.

“After negative tests Monday and Tuesday I tested positive for Covid this morning,” the NBC host wrote on Twitter on Wednesday. “Canceling shows the rest of this week. Apologies to our scheduled guests and loyal viewers.”

Per Deadline, the slate of guests for the canceled shows include Nathan Lane and musical guest Maren Morris on Wednesday, Adam Pally and Issa Rae on Thursday, and Nikki Glaser on Friday.

Many of Meyers’ fellow late night hosts have had to go off the air due to contracting coronavirus. Stephen Colbert first tested positive in April; in May, the show announced he was “experiencing symptoms consistent with a recurrence of COVID” and would “be isolating for a few additional days,” so tapings of his show was canceled.

Similarly, Jimmy Kimmel contracted the virus in early May and tapped comedian Mike Birbiglia to step in as guest-host. A few weeks later, guests John Mulaney and Andy Samberg memorably had to fill in when the host tested positive again: “That’s right… Jimmy has contracted COVID again, for the second time in three weeks,” Samberg said in the monologue. “And we’re thinking they should probably change the name of the show to ‘Jimmy Kimmel… Alive.’”

James Corden canceled episodes of The Late Late Show due to COVID in January, the same month that Meyers first tested positive. And The Tonight Show’s Jimmy Fallon contracted the virus during his show’s holiday break.

All this to say, COVID persists in infecting comedians and presidents alike. It never hurts to wear a mask, particularly with other infectious diseases cropping up out there. Wishing Seth Meyers a speedy recovery.

Isn’t cancelling shows due to COVID kinda “so two years ago”?

Taking reasonable precautions after testing positive for a highly infections, deadly disease that he will probably have mild symptoms from due to being vaccinated. No wonder Trumpian Fascist hate his show.

“Adam Pally and Issa Rae on Thursday, and Nikki Glaser on Friday.”

That’s okay. Issa Rae and Nikki Glaser were both just on the show on July 18.

Just so we’re clear (since this article isn’t) monkeypox is spread through close, skin-to-skin contact with an infected person. It is largely (but not exclusively) transmitted through sex. Mask-wearing doesn’t factor into it, unless I’ve been wearing my mask in the wrong place all along.

    • bensavagegarden-av says:

To be even more clear, it is OVERWHELMINGLY transmitted by sex between men. I understand some media outlets are hesitant to clarify that so they don’t encourage any homophobia, but I think it’s important to make people aware of the facts.

I also think what we say when we want to be precise about what we mean when we mean “homophobia.” It would be grotesque if the rise of monkeypox cases led people to attack gay people’s equal treatment under the law, right to marriage, right to be free from discrimination, etc. But some of the concern here seems to be that the cases will make the public critical of gay cultural norms, especially the norms when it comes to casual sex with multiple partners within a short period of time.  I’m not sure that’s the same thing.

Lol here we go again, “AIDS is a gay disease” Part 2. Being gay is not a prequisite for transmitting Monkeypox. It’s an irrelevant fact that makes straight idiots think they’re immune if you focus on it instead of focusing on how everyone can avoid transmitting it.

      • lmh325-av says:

Arguably, it’s most commonly spread through anal sex. While that does mean homosexual men are more at risk, it also means any heterosexual couples engaging in anal sex could be at risk.

Thanks? I mean, you’re not a media outlet and no one gets their news from you, but I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt that you support gay rights and people.

Monkeypox can be passed on from person to person through: any close physical contact with monkeypox blisters or scabs (including during sexual contact, kissing, cuddling or holding hands) touching clothing, bedding or towels used by someone with monkeypox.
Rarely it may be spread by breathing in droplets breathed out by a person with monkeypox during prolonged close contact.

Just so we’re clear (since this article isn’t) This article isn’t about monkeypox.
unless I’ve been wearing my mask in the wrong place all along.

Well, if you’re wearing it under your nose while talking to someone, then at least you blend in with a bunch of people I’ve seen.

      • planehugger1-av says:

The article includes this passage: “It never hurts to wear a mask, particularly with other infectious diseases cropping up out there.” The words “other infectious diseases” is a link, which takes you to CDC guidance about monkeypox. And you’re right, the article isn’t about monkeypox, which is why the author didn’t need to make an aside about monkeypox.  Once the author says something about monkeypox (no matter how unnecessary it was to do so) she should not say something inaccurate.  Do you disagree?

        • it-has-a-super-flavor--it-is-super-calming-av says:

          Fair enough.
I’ll concede, my expectations are pretty low regarding news quality on AV Club. That said, the quote from this article is reasonably true even if the link is misplaced.

I don’t understand why Myers doesn’t have someone guest-host his show

    • legospaceman-av says:

Money? He hasn’t worn a suit since he’s been back in the studio. Granted they could let Jenny Hagel guest-host, but that might a lot on her plate.

    • planehugger1-av says:

Since Meyers has COVID now, he likely also had it when he was interacting with his staff and crew earlier in the week.  Do you really want to have a guest host show up as a favor, so they can have their hair and makeup done by people who did Meyers’ hair and makeup yesterday?

I think it would be wise to distinguish between what happened to Colbert and Kimmel and what’s happening here. In Colbert’s and Kimmel’s case, they took Paxlovid, which has a fairly standard side effect of basically postponing half of the illness, so instead of being sick for two weeks, you’re sick for a week, better for a week, and then sick again. (Which, I should clarify, isn’t a reason to not take it; it still reduces the severity of symptoms, and helps mitigate the risks of “long COVID.”) Meyers, by contrast, seems have simply contracted COVID a second time – so it’s an entirely separate infection, rather than a recurrence of the same infection, merely delayed by medication. Either way, stay safe out there, and for all of our sakes, wear a mask. (And get the goddamn vaccine if you haven’t.)
