This year marks the 20th anniversary of Disney’s 2003 remake of Freaky Friday—a movie that’s had a long enough cultural tail at this point that, say, the New York Times occasionally runs interviews with the stars to commemorate its anniversary. Said piece also being where we get news today that Disney is in development on a sequel to the movie, with both Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis “in talks” to reprise their roles as the body-swapped Coleman family, who will, presumably, once again be subjected to the meddling whims of mystically empowered fortune cookie creators.

In fact, Curtis apparently helped kick off the sequel plans, telling the Times that, while she was doing global press for Halloween Ends, “people wanted to know if there was going to be another Freaky Friday.” (We have never personally met people harboring this deep-seated wish, but we’re also not Jamie Lee Curtis, so who knows.) In any case, when she got back from said press tour, “I called my friends at Disney and said, ‘It feels like there’s a movie to be made.’” And Disney, which never met a popular property from the childhoods of the key demo it wouldn’t cheerfully exploit, clearly agreed: The New York Times piece states that “Disney confirmed that a sequel was in development, with Elyse Hollander writing the screenplay.”

The biggest question mark is, of course, Lohan, who has worked only sporadically over the last decade, most notably with a lead in a Netflix Christmas film, Falling For Christmas, last year. When asked about the possible sequel (in a separate interview than the one with Curtis, although the two apparently still keep in touch), Lohan said, “Jamie and I are both open to that, so we’re leaving it in the hands that be. We would only make something that people would absolutely adore.”

If they can work Herbie and That Darn Cat into the movie then Disney will finally have its own Avengers.

i love Freaky Friday 2003. That concert scene at the end with Jamie Lee’s character shredding guitar is iconic. Anyone ever see the alternate ending where the brother and Grandpa swap bodies? that was creepy.

I remember the ending as being that the daughter crashtackled her mother before any more fortune cookie related mayhem could happen. Is there an ending where it happens is what you’re saying?

The DVD has an alternative ending where the body swap actually happens, I think.

Hi, on Disney+ they have 2x alternative endings under extras (i couldn’t find it on youtube to show you). The scenes are basically the same as the movie.in scene 1: The old asian lady gives the kid and grandpa the cookies and the daughter shouts off-screen “mamma, you get back here. mamma”, but no tackling from the daughter. it just cuts to the kid and grandpa breaking the cookies then the scene cuts to a wide shot of the party and there is suddently a earthquake. the kid and grandpa shout “earthquake” then it cuts to Lynsey and her band rocking out.Scene 2 is the same as above, but instead when the kid andgrandpa break the cookies, no earthquake, just a cut to black and a title card saying ‘Freaky Friday’.

Lohan’s mother yelling after her “Make good choices” has aged both great and terribly.

I watched the original film when Disney+ came around, and was surprised to see the mother and daughter actually don’t interact with each other at all after the swap happens. It’s one of those cases of a movie having a good idea but not doing the best with it, so the remake very much has its own reason to exist and takes full advantage.

Well, I for one would see a sequel to their Freaky Friday. It was a lot of fun (in fact I just rewatched it recently and it holds up well) and Lohan and Curtis were great in it. Not sure we need a sequel but it’s sure not one of the worst ideas I’ve heard.
